...you start riding a horse?

If the description of the software and the charity donation is true (lol), you could describe Folding@home optional install being malware as well, since that functions similarly in its spare resource use.

Har har. Ripping on me is fine, but supporting this kind of shit shows what you really are.

Deluge's autolabeling addon is fantastic. It can label on tracker, keywords and what not. It is why I chose to use it. The only big disadvantage is that files have to be deleted from within the program. Doing so via explorer makes deluge download it again.

What the hell are you trying to do? lol I've literally never had any of these problems.

Pretty much what I said, really basic stuff. I tried having it auto-add my existing torrent files, but then it didn't bring up any kind of prompt for location for them so they all got created at the default download location. Which, fine, that's not a bug, but it's a dumb lack of functionality to not ask for a location for auto-added files like it does when you manually add them.

Then, the auto-added torrents didn't bother to do the "resume check" for the torrents that actually WERE already in the default location I had set (the same one I'd been using), which ultimately meant I had to remove all the torrents from the program and manually add them one-by-one to have it actually look and check.

But before I figured that out, I paused everything (since it was trying to re-download every torrent, including what would have overwrote existing files) and tried using the "Set location" option to make the torrents see their existing files. That basically achieved nothing - if I pointed it to the correct directory, it was 50/50 for whether it actually remembered that (but still didn't verify the file) or pointed to a completely new location in My Documents on my OS drive. And it actually moved files that it had just not verified to that My Documents folder, removing them from their old location. I know it didn't just re-download them because the progress was always around 1% as far as downloading went.

Then there were all the bugs with manually adding torrents and selecting the destinations. Inconsistent behavior depending on whether the torrent was just a single file or a file inside a folder, things like that.

Again, this is all problems with trying to use EXISTING torrents. Based on everything I encountered, it works fine IF you don't try and use old torrents that you have existing files for. But obviously coming from nearly a decade of using torrent programs, I had some existing ones :P

Edit: So since I invested so much time into it, I let it re-download the files it deleted last night, but yea probably going to try Deluge and if that doesn't have the functionality I want I'll just live with Tixati not having a bandwidth scheduler.

I started looking into what it would take to transfer all of my torrents to qTorrent... so there is no batch way to do this, I'll have to re-add each one individually... maybe i'll just not seed for a while until the next uTorrent version. :(

Here is how to disable all the ads in uTorrent. There are settings in the preferences to do it. Some settings requires you to press a key combination to reveal them though:
Turn off ALL Ads/Featured Content/Bundle Crap in Utorrent/Bittorrent:

Options > Preferences > Advanced...
Turn ALL settings to false:
bt.enable_pulse
distributed_share.enable
gui.show_notorrents_node
offers.left_rail_offer_enabled
gui.show_plus_upsell
offers.content_offer_autoexec
offers.sponsored_torrent_offer_enabled
offers.featured_content.badge.enabled
offers.featured_content_notifications_enabled
offers.featured_content_rss_enabled

To complete the disabling of ads you will need to change some HIDDEN settings as well.
From the Options menu, hold F2 & Shift keys while clicking Preferences and it will reveal more settings in the Advanced section. Chance these to FALSE as well:
gui.show_gate_notify
gui.show_plus_av_upsell
gui.show_plus_conv_upsell
gui.show_plus_upsell_nodes

NOTE: I've read a few of these settings could reset if you restart uTorrent... so double check that

uTorrent may get a lot of shit for its ads but they do at least give you some ways to turn them off.
The only problem with qbittorrent is that it's so ugly, UI is stuck in some early 2000s style. I guess nobody cares how a torrent client looks like though.
Very much this. It's one of the reasons I'm so hesitant to change. I like my programs to look good. uTorrent isn't ugly (once the ads are off :p)

Damn this is a new low for utorrent especially with how bloated the latest utorrent builds are
2.2.1 will forever be the best I guess

Soooo, how do I go about getting the 2.2.1 version? I think I'm on the latest version right now. It's definitely gone down hill since I started using uTorrrent a few years ago.

I'm using utorrent as it was easy to setup with the PIA proxy.

Any recommendations for another where I can do the same?

Sorry but the Windows version of Transmission is junk. It's a weak GUI attachment to the command-line gig. I mean it's QT for heaven's sake!

Never had any problems with Windows Transmission. It works just as well as the Linux version over here.

Nothing wrong with QT either, why would you think that?

rarely torrent anything anymore, but when I do I use 2.2. Now if one had the newest version of utorrent installed, would unistalling fix the issue or would one have to look deeper to remove the miners?

Yeah qbit is good never had a single issue with it.
Love downloading the file in sequential order, VLC is able to handle files coming in on the fly. No need to wait.

Did uTorrent have that feature?

Went to download qbittorrent... site was down lol

Very much this. It's one of the reasons I'm so hesitant to change. I like my programs to look good. uTorrent isn't ugly (once the ads are off :p)

Yeah it doesn't look all that nice (qbit)
The Ubuntu version is the thumbnail on the wiki page though and it looks nice enough :/

I don't understand the people saying that uTorrent is bloated when it's only a 2MB download while the other programs people are recommending are 10+MB. Surely a program that's a fraction of the size of other programs can't be more bloated, right?

Please, use qBittorrent. Excellent program, no ads, very lightweight. Stopped using uTorrent ages ago.

Yeah, it's great. I made the switch recently since I had been using utorrent 2.2.1 forever and was wanting to upgrade to a modern client without the bloat.

Damn, I haven't bothered to look for uTorrent alternatives in years and now reading this thread is making me feel like it may be responsible for some malware on my PC that seems to change every GAF Ad to AdTech :/

Ah, too bad. I love QB because of the great rss options that make everything practically automated for me.

I might as well give this a look. I am still rocking 1.8.5 for utorrent as I didn't like the releases after that lol.

as for the topic on hand, if it's clearly spelled out when you are installing I have no issues with this. people should learn to read what they are installing when they install a program. Heck if it didn't use a noticeable amount of cpu, I am sure some people would be more than willing to do this just to help the company.

From the way I had heard people talking about the story, I had somehow gotten the impression that it was installed in a way that was less known to the user. If the mining software is mentioned and allowed to be unchecked in the installation process, then yeah, I personally equate it to those obnoxious search toolbar add-ons: something I habitually turn off while installing, and a minor nuisance.

Still, I only use my torrent software once ever couple of months at the most, and I'd just installed utorrent and updated it at my leisure for years. This incident has opened me up to alternative options that I'll have to look into

It's a real shame that this story has gained so much traction when it's clearly false and either designed to damage UTorrent or it's the work of a fucking idiot that doesn't read his installers and thus has no place working as a tech journalist.

We've had six pages now of sane voices popping up and trying to calm people down but the chickens are still running around, convinced that they have malware on their computers.

Jesus wept.

Wow, Transmission's memory footprint really is small! And I thought uTorrent 2.2.1 was already lightweight.

Unfortunately, Transmission does not have this uTorrent feature that I really need to make that final switch.

I don't torrent much but when I do, I use Tixati. It's light, self-contained, and they're pretty adamant in their stance against adware.

The fact that they even offer to install such extra programs offends me. I still occasionally use some programs that have installer options like that... but they're definitely on my "shitty companies that I will bail from if I have other options" list.

Jesus wept for uTorrent, wrongly accused of bundling a bitcoin mining software with their install- oh, wait. That's exactly what they did.

Here are the facts: It's a malicious program with shady owners. It is designed to use & monitor the customers' own hardware to literally make money for the owner of the program. It uses tactics specifically designed to prey upon people that are less experienced with technology; mainly children or elders. There is no universe where such malignant disregard for customers... everything is ever OK. There is no acceptable defense for bundling such a program with their software.

And before you try it, let's not even entertain the notion that any significant amount of the proceeds go to charity - if any. Remember, they've already declined to share the charity split.

The bottom line is, this sort of tactic needs to be stamped out immediately; it cannot be given a single inch from which to grow, lest it become a horrifying trend. We don't want this garbage in every program.

Utorrent stopped working so I uninstalled it recently and used Transmission instead. Not great but it gets the job done.

The private tracker I use insists on using utorrent and the link they have to 2.2.1 isn't working, I was using the version of the installer with this but I never click accept this offer on these installers so I didn't have it, but I've got rid of that version now.

Thanks for the heads up.

Edit: they list deluge 1.3.1/1.3.5 & transmission 2.03 as programs that also work, which of those two is the best?

Edit2: As I'm on Windows 8.1 deluge it is.

You can do that in Deluge, although you need to install a plugin called AutoShutdown. First thing I did after installing it.

Har har. Ripping on me is fine, but supporting this kind of shit shows what you really are.

Just messin' with ya.

uTorrent is freely-provided software, but obviously some money goes into its maintenance etc. It would definitely not be the first software I've used that did something like this. For shit's sake, the JRE installer has optional crapware installs now. In the case of uTorrent I would simply decline to install it, but you know many people don't even read a single line when clicking through the install screens. I would have a problem if they stuck something like this in there without ever notifying the user or by trying to obscure it. Is that what they've done here? Or did they just add an extra install screen for it where a user can decline?

Umm how do i check if i have this cryptocurrency trash on my PC?

I'm hoping that it uninstalled with the rest of my uTorrent data, if I had it.

Been lazy with upgrading from uTorrent, so this was definitely the final push. I checked out the original Bittorent quickly, and it's the exact same thing (and I honestly don't know the difference between the two, either).

I loved utorrent for so long, I guess that's why I stayed with it even after all its bullshit. It had been prompting me to DL the newest version but I couldn't be bothered...thankfully. Installed deluge tonight, I like it so far.

I went ahead and picked Deluge. Looks great! Oh, and I see at the bottom it says "no incoming connections". I always noticed and was wary when uTorrent always had random crap happening in the background, even when I didn't have anything download/uploading :/

Downloaded Deluge, i like it

I just downloaded Deluge and really like the look of it. Nice and simple.

One thing though - Is there a way to get a pop up notification telling me when a download has finished like uTorrent does?

Most freeware programs do this. This is just like those search bars.

But this is the problem now, some of these companies are getting sly even doing that.

malwarewtfreu7n.png

This is my artist conception because I can't remember the precise mouse icon that comes up when you hover over the proceed option minus the malware, but it was an icon clearly made to look like you couldn't click. The words are greyed out from the start, so it's permanently looking like it's unselectable. This very nearly got me, and I'm as in tuned to this whole malware universe as anyone can be minus going to actual college for it. Imagine Grandpa Joe or Grandma Melaine trying to download this? Fuggetaboutit, they don't teach that at the Church's Open a Window to Microsoft Windows introductory class that only costs $15.

I'm curious about this too. I liked that feature since sometimes I forget about what I have downloading.
