Until Dawn Launches on PS4 August 25th

I know SCEA is just going to screw the cover up.

I hope the game is good, it looks interesting.

The presentation was very fun to watch but it looks like a bad game honestly. But one thats probably also fun to run through. It could be one of those beautiful train wrecks.

I guess it just depends on what you're expecting. From this bit from USgamer's interview you can see that it's not the same approach as games like Heavy Rain or The Walking Dead

The stated aim of Until Dawn is to create a "playable horror movie". How do you decide where to land on the line between movie and game?

Samuels: That's such a good and important question. The key word in "playable horror movie" is "playable", not "movie". What Until Dawn is striving to be is world-class within the specific genre of 'interactive drama'. It's been important to us that the player's judgment, speed and skill will be tested throughout in the context of an engaging story played out in a stunning set with believable emotional performances from our cast.

When we say "playable horror movie", that's what we mean. The judgment element of the gameplay is geared towards the player's determination of a given situation, and how they choose to respond to it, and whilst the skill and speed tests are delivered in branching set-piece situations, success and failure will determine the way in which the story plays out. Ultimately, the fate of each of the cast.

The player's 'score' is determined by how many of the cast live or die over the course of their story, which is inextricably connected to the player's skill and judgment. As we know, there are all types of gamers and they like all kinds of different things in their games, so no single game can be everybody's cup of tea, but alongside the skill/speed/judgment dimensions of gameplay we've incorporated elements of meaningful exploration and collection that fit with into the overall tone of mystery and horror.

From a plot perspective I think it'll come down to if people will accept what it's trying to be. It's a slasher game. Slasher movies aren't known for having deep plots or even great acting. They're basically intentionally cheesy in those areas. But they can still be enjoyable.

I'm so excited for this! Going to get a group of friends and pass the controller around. Come what may to the characters. Glad it finally has a date, even if it's nearing the end of Summer.
Same here, it'll be the end of winter here though, I'm praying for a stormy night haha!

$60 is a hefty asking price for an "interactive drama."

Is there any kind of optional share play options built into this game?
It would be interesting to each be assigned a character and watch what choices each player makes. It would be like a theater simultaneously occurring in multiple households with one person from each being able to participate.

Looks good and that's a good release date, earlier than I thought, can't think of anything else I want coming out around that time so more than likely to pick this up.

Knowing my luck, I get everyone killed.

I'm getting Heavy Rain/Cabin In The Woods vibes from the trailer.

I'm tempted to get this but absolutely hate cheap jump scares (seriously wtf were they in Mortal Kombat X) but I am intrigued by ALL OF THIS.

Man that Shadowfall Engine, the lighting, the particle effects are second to none, nice character models and great IQ too. Gameplaywise, it looks very tense, a breath of fresh air compared to the bevy of other games on the market.
Looks super nice apart from some depth of field and self-shadow artefacting. The animation wonkiness is more of an artistic fault I think.

Definitely, especially the Grant Ward one lol
Also this has to be Bull shot

Wow. This game looks awesome. I think the graphics may have even been upgraded tbh. Game looks sweet, and will have a fun take on the horror genre I'm sure.
Graphics have been upgraded. Better lighting, fur shading among other things.

So excited this is the engine powering Guerrilla's next game. It's gonna be amazeballs.

EDIT:
$60 is a hefty asking price for an "interactive drama."

$60 is a hefty price for all games, for my wallet.

Yet this does not seem somehow more egregiously overpriced, because it's interactive drama.

Is this one of those GAF jokes, I am not fast enough with?

So is this a full-fledged game, or something more like Outlast? Also, was that trailer shot using in-game graphics? That house scene right at the beginning looked pretty mind blowing if that was in-game.

It's a full retail game and everything in the trailer is in-game.

That playthrough from E3 I think was 60fps (ish). This trailer is not. I wonder if it'll be 30fps now?

Either way is fine just wondering.

Post history is a wonderful thing. :)

Gues that means 10+ minutes will get wasted demoing this game at the Sony e3 conference :(

1) 10 mins? yeah...no. 10 mins is a long time.

2) so what if it gets demo'd at e3 as it should be? it's a ps4 exclusive.

3) just because you don't like it doesn't mean time will be wasted by showing it. yeah let's waste more time with destiny or whatever.

people pay $60 for super mario
i did
or that shitty crappy game called evolve.
if this game turns out to be good i dont know why anybody wouldnt pay $60

Why would anyone? I'll buy it used two weeks later when prices have crumbled. Worked for The Order, this has much less hype, the theme hardly fits the release date and many will quickly sell it to get money back for MGSV. ~10-15€ after re-selling my copy sounds alright. If it turns out decent of course.

US cover per Amazon.com:

There is also a Pre-order Bonus:
"Pre-order Until Dawn and receive the Until Dawn Bonus Chapter. In this bonus chapter Matt and Emily, a new couple, are out on the cold and snowy mountain path and it’s not long before they realize that they are not alone. Only your choices determine who will survive."

Sorry 'merica.

I didn't know it came with that effect too! I'm jealous. Then again, Europeans sometimes get the bad end of the stick so they deserve something cool.

I hate you.

EDIT: Oh, same cover. Thanks, Amazon. I don't hate you anymore, Shin.

They must've updated that in the last hour or so. I checked it earlier and it still had the boxart that just featured blood on snow. But it's good to see that SCEA didn't mess with the design.

Really hoping the year they've had since the last showing has allowed them to solve the pretty severe performance issues they were having with the ShadowFall engine.

what on earth is this hyperbole? The engine should get through 1080p30fps with ease while still looking better than most games, even last year.

Damn wish it came a week earlier as the fall semester begins that week I guess I will have to make some time. Regardless though I can't wait to play this and will pick it up day 1.

that logic works the same for every game. most people here would say that the witcher 3 worth $60 but im waiting for price drop others would say that batman doesnt worth $60 but im buying day 0 :P

Its definitely the same base approach as Heavy Rain, he even uses the Cage coined term interactive drama as a genre/content description. Basic gameplay and the fact that characters can die resulting in multiple endings are all pretty similar. With testing your skill/reflexes he probably means they will double down on these choice elements, as HR was already a very tense game in parts without being necessarily horror focussed. More a test of your mind than your thumbs I would guess.
