Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

Streaming is a good solution, but no comparison with disconnect USB HDD from PC, connect USB HDD (or pendrive) to PS3. XD Oh yeah, and NTFS support.

Someone please tell Sony that we need the option to DISABLE FRIENDS LOGIN NOTIFICATION.

Who else turns off notifications because of this? It makes in game messaging useless.

The photo app looks good..

I'm wondering if and when Sony's going to integrate an alternate gestural interface for stuff like this, and the xmb generally..Toshiba have one running on their Cell TVs, Sony doing something for PSeye owners might be nice.

I'm having issues now, but it does work great.....except not for my 360's : (

yes I know is is ps3mediaserver, but I want a single solution damnit!

sidenote, there is like little info with this program. Do I need to disable the SSDP service like with TVersity?

Obviously the best would be for the systems to play these formats natively and not need to rely on homebrew apps (for us, not them)
maybe you can email the programmer and ask for 360 support.

yea little info but there's a big thread about it at avforum i think. it was pretty much plug-n-play for me and after that i tweaked it a little to get the right subtitle to appear and video quality. i love this program.

are your ps3 and 360 hooked up to separate TVs...? why would you need it on both?

Yup, I have a PS3/360 on my main TV and another 360 used exclusively as a media extender on another.

I kind of screwed myself when I reinstalled TVersity because it transcodes the backup of my family home videos and my kids go apeshit to see them now :D

ideally I'll go back to letting the 360 stream via MP11 and setup PS3mediaserver again for my PS3

I know I'm going to be taking a heck of a lot more pictures now. That app looks too sweet, and great for showing family, and just going through over time when you get a big collection. Weddings, family events, the perfect digital picture book. I did something like this when I first found out about it on ps3. I took my old pictures of family then set up a slide show that zoom in and out with face recognition. Then I added a song rotation, it made people in my family stop and look. Great for holidays.

I like how the PS3 is programed to recognize the faces, children, smiles, etc. That stuff is amazing to me. I'm going to love this app.

I posted this on the Sony blog...but maybe Sony reads GAF first (heheh)!

This feature better use the BR Remote very well. It would make this photo viewing software much, much more accessible for non-gamers and a more pleasent experience for all.

pretty neat. now when you release 2.65 or 2.70 dont make me wait so long, i want to see what they will come up with next :D

edit: nvm, working now.

I'd like a refund on the photo gallery and please apply the store credit towards PS2 BC, thanks

They could remove the photo option completely from my XMB and I'd be hard pressed to think when I would even notice it was gone. This and the music option I never use.

Sounds cool, but I was really hoping the next update allowed for multiple PSN users to log in at the same time on one console. That's really the last thing I need out of the PSN.

should work fine with tversity, except that it is so much better solution.

For me, thanks to PS3 media server, I setup very old Athlon64 as my media server/NAS/HTPC in my bed room, and it streams content to PS3 in my living room... with my very old Athlon, it works flawlesly... tversity wouldnt work at all :-). And then I can use that to show content on my bedroom tv as well, since it works awesome with ATI 3450 card (very cheap).

And as an added benefit, that media server pc also acts as my NAS now... it is pretty awesome, thanks to PS3 Media Server, and Media Player Classic (the kickass one), which can use 3450's chip to output 1080p on my old school Athlon :).

yeah, streaming is much better than connecting USB HDD all the time and moving it around :-).

There's a couple more things that come with the update.

- 3-D Secure Support: 3-D secure of credit cards are now supported (whatever that means).

- XMB Theme Support on Blu-ray movie discs. You can apparently download themes from BD movies. The first movie to have this feature will be "Pineapple Express".

- HDD game data can be deleted during gameplay if the HDD becomes full.

- Safe Mode. A warning is added to mention to "Restore Default Settings" apparently when the PS3 needs to.

XMB Theme Support? Does that mean XMB in BluRay? or just the ability to grab themes from BluRay?

you will be able to stream sd content... but you cant stream mkv's anyway wirelessly, right?

did you at least try the program? there are a couple of options for wireless streaming (in term of the video quality).

Yeah I tried streaming since everyone was raving about this feature. I tested it with the 1up show and got it working in about 2 seconds but it was choppy as hell and constantly starting and stopping, I would have been better off streaming the flash version through the ps3 browser.

Well, see, that's the thing - anything I have in SD is stuff that would work on the PS3 anyhow.

shut the fuck up about the damn clock already, just wait the 4/5 seconds for the thing to dissapear.

And it's also a 4/5 second coding fix, unless Sony's programmers are shit.

Streaming works out fine for me for the most part, except for HD content. My PC is a piece of shit when it comes to anything to do with video encoding.

I'm so confused. Why would you need to guest PSStore support? Why would someone have a PS3, and an internet connection but not a PSN account?
It just makes sense to have the psstore open as soon as you turn on your ps3 for the first time. Otherwise it'd be like having to register on amazon before you could browse the items.

I have lots of x264 encoded content. It just has to be muxed into an .mp4 container. There is also a limit on filesize and a few other things to be concerned about like lack of subs.
The limit on the external FAT32 drives/memsticks does not apply to the internal drive. Most people just assume the FAT32 4GB limit also applies to the internal drive because the system can only read external drives/memsticks formatted FAT32, but its simply not true. The internal drive uses a proprietary file system that can hold files greater than 4GB's if you can find a way for the system to access those files. The system can access files >4GB's via a DLNA server formatted in a file structure that can hold files >4GB's (NTFS, HFS+, Ext3, etc...).

You can also use a .Vob container for x264 content or AVCHD (with support for subs).

usually the people i see bitching about ps3 FW updates are the people who use their PS3s like every other month, and when they turn it on "oh my god another FW UPDATE WTF"....."you know the last time you were on VIA my friends list was like 63 days ago".....:lol

3.0 Great things are coming

Same here with a decent connection and wireless router. Streaming content is off an on. As long as no-one else is using my internet connection, it streams fine using PS3 Media Server. TVerisity also works well with PODCASTS. I use both.

To be fair, I have not tried this specific application. Every other stream app I have tried, however, has provided less than desired results. And, personally, any quality option other than the file's original quality level would be pointless to me for the kind of stuff I'd want to use this solution for.

Speaking of podcasts, ridiculous that the PSP has had podcast support for a long time and the PS3 still doesn't. There are some great video podcasts out there now, would be awesome to download them directly to the PS3.

YES.

Is there anyway for the PS3 to not recognize the WMP server? I don't use it and don't want the icon on my XMB but it won't go away :[

Wow, PS3 Media Server works perfectly, thanks for the heads up.

For people on wireless the faq says to set the Maximum Bandwidth to 14-15 if your experiencing stuttering. Its worth a try if you haven't already.

cool feature....but can they honestly say anyone requested this app? i thought firmware updates would be stability and feedback based.

Disable media streaming in the network options.

If they can build in new features like this, why would they not do so? Stuff like this, contrary to the beliefs of some, aren't holding back things like cross-game invites or voice chat.

indeed. i tend to side with people who think these other things aren't being worked on, or at least properly prioritized. but wtf do i know, i heart my ps3's media abilities.

Well it wont ever work wirelessly without media server because wireless sucks ass :D

Setting up an affordable media server is only real solution, it solves million different problems for complete coverage of media in your house:
- easy way to download torrents even when you are not at home
- NAS storage for any device on your network
- easily expand storage with cheapest drives - 3.5"
- media server functionality w/ PS3 Media Server
- HTPC for your bedroom/other room

All you need is old computer and cheap card that outputs through hdmi well (Ati 3450 is $20 now, and is all you need). And spread some cable love if you ever want to do anything that resembles HD over the network.

So, this sorting by smiles feature is clearly very important. I for one am looking forward to checking out all my pictures in an orderly manner, without having to see all old people.

But how does it work? Magic? Is there a small gremlin inside the machine, telling the machine what picture has people smiling? I heard Japanese machines have gremlins in them.

No, I think it's just the ability to grab themes available on the Blu-ray disc.

It's a software algorithm. The newer cameras can snap a picture by detecting smiles too (e.g., waiting for a baby or a dog to "smile" LOL).

3.0 firmware upgrade will be able to tell you which tooth needs fixing when you smile.

So, I'm just now watching the video for this new Photo app, and... good god almighty is this thing ugly as all hell, both in style and UI. Who in the world designed this thing?

So we have come to the conclusion that gremlins are responsible. I am satisfied.

they want to get more people to sign up, what better way than letting people browse without having to?

that way people who may not sign up before downloading something will browse, see something, then want to sign up.

Sweet! Got a butt-ton of manga on my HDD, that I can properly organize now. Hopefully navigating through hundreds of pages won't be such a damn chore.

So after this great photo gallery (I actually use the photo viewer all the time), are we going to see a simular music solution? The current one is good, but some extra features could make it much better.

Afaik it depends on which option you use. Often there is one option that leaves the video untouched. I use the buffer in the status screen as to check whether it does more to the video than streaming it. With tmuxer the buffer loads up very fast and I get an image almost instantly. It's a shame I don't get any audio in most cases.
