Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

Do a SYSTEM backup every once in a while. Manually copying the save files would do, but some are copy protected and the only way to get those is to do the proper backup thing. You can then restore on a different system no prob.

I dunno what you get in USA if your PS3 breaks. Here, in Italy, they simply send you a brand new (so they say) model.

I just did a fresh system back-up tonight after hearing about your situation

You have no idea. Did you play LBP? Did you unlock all of it? All that is gone forever. Even downloading a save file from the net wont help as it wont allow to unlock any current or future trophies (different user bs).

You have no idea how pissed I am. Good thing I wasn't working on a level.
I remember making a backup to my external HDD a while ago, but I don't remember when ... but I think I have my LBP stuff saved

BUT the game itself is inside the ps3 :/

I'm not sure about trying something like this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpWieIoBBrk

although i mean it's dead ....

I have about 10.000 pictures on my harddisk (yes its my primary viewer and yes I have a back up, and no there is no porn) should I worry when I start the photo gallery? It seems it would take some time for it to load, or is that just a bug?

Sony will send you a new copy no prob. Just tell them the disc is in there.

I was brave enough to remove mine (LBP as well) the hard way: I disassembled the PS3. And then the Blu-Ray drive.

(Ironically false :P )

That new feature will come in handy for me at the moment. :lol I guess I need to be signed out of my PSN/user account for that to work as it's just bringing up an error for me.

Though it sounds like that's for browsing the store only and if you wanna actually download anything you'll need to register an account.

Also, if the PS3 breaks and you send it back to Sony, do you get back your original?

Sounds like a mess to deal with, hopefully I never have to..

My PS3's bluray drive broke early last year and rather than just replacing the drive they sent me a refurb unit instead. So I assume they do that for everything.

Perhaps off-topic.. but...

If I want to backup my PS3 via the built-in utility, is the data compressed? Or if I have 80gb of stuff will I need 80gb of backup space?

Regarding divx/xvid playback on the PS3. If I am watching a movie and stop it, it will remember where I was at and resume, however if I turn my PS3 off the next time I go to play the movie it starts from the beginning.

Is there something I have to enable to allow it to resume or is this a feature that the PS3 doesn't have? My 360 does this fine for multiple movies. If it helps, I am playing said movies from a NAS box.

I have no problem with that.

If I watch a divx/xvid movie and quit it, turns the system off, turn it on again, play another movie, and then continue watching the first movie after that, it contiues exactly from where I left it.
Have my movies on my HDD.

When doing a system backup. is it only important files or everything on the HDD?
I have a 250gb HDD and have no option to backup all of it on my USB-flash (8gb).

I didn't back all my stuff up :( ;(

I'm pretty sure the backup I made prior to upgrading my HDD came off uncompressed, so you're looking at 1:1 in terms of required space for the backup.

Thanks for the feedback, I will go back and play around with the way I exit movies, might have something to do with it, or the fact they are on my NAS.

Quick Question: Do I need an extra partition on my external hdd for the backup? I mean, I don´t want my other data on my external hdd to be killed.

the new photo app is not very intuitive. first thing to use it have to launch it separately from xmb photo gallery is counter productive. i like all these firmware features but sony need to learn a thing system integration from apple.

No, nothing will be killed and you don't need an extra partition

so you like the idea of forcing everyone to install this? even if they don't wanna use it? :/ that sounds more like the Microsoft Windows way

So, is it possible to view the photos you have stored on your computer wit this application, or is it only for pictures stored on the PS3 (that is, worthless for me personally)?

Just in the nail :D

I mean... People is stupid enough to need NO democracy on software. Keep things simple, keep things mandatory and unified, and you'll find the success. People with knowledge complains about iPhone and Internet Explorer, but we all know people with knowledge is about the 1% of the customers.

no, it anyalyzes photos in real time, which would be not possible over dlna.

but you can easily copy photos over via dlna to your ps3 and try it out.

Whoever complains about software not being integrated, did not try it - it is actually a lot better that way... it has too many options, and is more complicated than internal photo browser... it should be separate. Otherwise, it works quite well...

I thought it could do a scan and create a database with content analisys stored. As it is, it's an interesting idea but for me personally this will probably just lead to it not being installed. Got too many pictures, and keeping them all stored on different machines just because of this software, while the standard picture viewing option lets me share them from the standard PC storage, is too much of a hassle for the luxury of being able to browse pictures in a different manner.

I noticed a couple of days ago that the pictures I had transferred to my PS3 have been reduced in file-size.
Pictures that originally had a size about 5-6mb was under 1 mb on the PS3.
Have I missed some option to keep the original file-size for pictures stored on the PS3?

The Photo Gallery thing is really great. Nice update, I'll see if I can find some 3.11 movies, just to check things out. :D

I just wish I could organize photos on the HDD in folders that I specify.

You can, only that you don't create the folder, but rather you can organise them in custom albums by editing their description. Same with videos, music and games/demos. It's not too convenient, but it works.

I love the people complaining.
I just downloaded and installed the update in 7 minutes.

For the love.

Bully for you. If you ever do everything perfectly (and even have it hooked up to a UPS so power failures aren't an option) and it still kills your PS and makes you coffin it, maybe you'll understand why some people get annoyed at the way things are handled.

ps3 gallery is nice but due to its lack of media server support completly useless for me.

I just copied 1000 pictures from my PC to PS3 via DLNA in about 20 mins wirelessly. It's really not that big a deal to transfer your pics.

Same here ... its got to be a freaking disaster when trying to manage the photos in Photo Gallery through media server!

The update changed my (removed) default setting in COD WAW, instead of being inverted, I was regular....that made for 30 seconds of really bad shooting :lol

Huh, the install took 7 minutes, 2 to download, but 5 to install. It usually downloads slower and installs faster, but whatever, Im happy.

Slick photo manager. I like it.

And I am glad the clock/battery issue is still there, I am still winning the bet.

Mine took 1 minute and 6 seconds to DL and less than a minute to install :X Are you guys using internet on another system at the same time?

Just woke up, seems this FW killed some PS3s...Is this the new 2.40??? And should I be worried to update?

Also, I hope sony releases a new web browser(chrome/FF) app for PS3 since they like to release all this junk I dont really need.

Ok will DL but if it bricks, GAF owns me a PS3.

+1 for fast update.

Photo Gallery is very nice. Didn't see it so much in the video, but when it's your own photos being highlighted and stuff...it's nice. Categorisation works pretty well as far as I can see.

I hate the photo gallery icon, my PS3 is not a macintosh... I can only hope that some future theme will be able to blow it away.

Had to copy photos over DNLA to just play with the thing, but I can't see myself taking the time to actually manage my photos this way. Thanks for the free stuff, Sony, but ugh there are other things I would have rather seen having effort poured into.

there is nothing to manage, it is all automatic and real time... i copied 3,000 pictures from dlna, and it instantly shows them sorted via timeline it uses, which looks quite good.

I used to do this. A better way is just to create Photo Playlists locally or use a DLNA server (and have the folders created on the server side).

Now, Photo Gallery allows you to group the photos using more options. You may then create a custom play list for the different groups.

Anyone think there's a chance they could go with a better browser, like a webkit based version or FF derivative?

I think the updates are based on region/server, some of mine are 30+ minutes some are 5 (like this one) my connection has nothing to do with it.

I really wish that you didn't have to copy the files to the hard drive of the PS3 first :(
I have a port. hdd and tons of photos are on there too.

EXTEND PLAYLIST SUPPORT TO USB DEVICES!

a new browser would be wonderful. i hate the one they have now. i want to be able to increase the font size of everything. right now, i'm forced to zoom way in (panasonic 50" plasma if wondering) to read the text.

also, i hate always having to say it's ok to run the plugin.

What do you mean?

I don't see 'sort by album,' just sort by playlist. Is that what you mean? And where do I edit the description? I press triangle on a pic, i go to information, all I see is 'comment.' so I made a comment "cars" on 4 pics and there seems to be no way to sort by that?

As for games, I can change the album when I go to information in the triangle menu, but then how do I sort them by those albums? They still just sit there in the sloppy list

help is appreciated, thanks

Square on the GAME part of XMB, sorts by format, album name, and unsorted

nope, it's dead ...and now i'm all depressed, the thing is $150 to send in even though Sony themselves killed my ps3 with the FW :'/ and as a "starving student" I don't have the money atm.

You really ought to call Sony anyway and essentially tell them the truth: your PS3 was fine until the update. The update was just put online. They have to fix it. You've bought PS hardware before and you can't believe this is happening etc etc. You might be able to get them to fix it for free.

Think this is already posted but here we go

There are some more details emerging about tomorrows PS3 Firmware Update.

According to our source, on top of the already announced Photo Gallery feature, and Divx 3.11 support, here are some more of the expected feaures of FW 2.60:
- Safe Mode
- Blu-Ray Disc Theme Support
- HDD Data can be accessed and deleted in-game
- 3-D Secure Support
- Improved System Stabilty

We are not exactly sure what these features offer, especially the Blu-Ray Disc Theme Support, and the Safe Mode, but we are looking forward to finding out.

http://*************************/2009/01/20/more-fw-260-details/

anyone knows if Safe Mode & BRD Themes are confirmed?

edit: just noticed ps lifestyle is banned from gaf... so might be a hoax :S
