update 2.01

2.00 gave us new stuff. This one fixed things.
They're doing exactly what they should be. It's Microsoft and Nintendo who are slow with their updates (although Nintendo tends to update system functionality by releasing channels rather than updating the firmware)

Yeah, a company that actually fixes things and doesn't leave them broken for a year or two.

You can't deny the fact that Sony at least listens to their customers, and is always committed to solving problems.

That's what I meant.

I finished the game in one sitting and the game never froze on me ( launch 60 gig).

I played from Chapter 7 to 17 tonight, I haven't had any problems with crashes or freezes. I've only heard of one problem reported in the official thread, something about freezing at the end of chapter 12 or 13 for one person.
Seriously, I think it could have to do with how well the PS3 is cooling itself. My console is in a confined space in my TV furniture set (was in horizontal position first, now is in vertical position with maybe 4 inches left on top of it). It's a 60GB as well and I was running it under Firmware 2.00. The game froze on me for a total of 8 times (I finished it yesterday), and it seem to do so at arbitrary times (no chapters in particular) after having played the game for a long time.

I never had any problems with previous games...

You're complaining?

Mine took over 4 hours.

OH, I wish I could download in 17 minutes.

i've basically never been able to download an update from the PS3 itself, it seems to take forever.

i just wait for the update to be up on the official Japanese or American site and then i download it with my computer and install from an SD card.

just downloaded this 2.01 from the US site and it took me something like 4 minutes. better than waiting an hour to download the same update.

:)

OK, this is going to sound stupid...

After updating to 2.01, it seems Assassin's Creed runs somewhat more fluid, like improved framerate and less tearing. Is it my imagination??

Is that even possible???

Did you just bitch about Sony for improving the PS3?

no the bitching was about fucking up with 2.0 (which btw. didn't even diserve to be a 2.0) and than updating the 2.0 2 weeks later with with a 2.01... whatever

*fixed*

Better to have the hardware working at 100% from the get go. Software can always be fixed later. :lol

yeah. riiiight. thats shows clearly your standpoint. PS3 worked from the get go... you made my day.

you'd be better off coming up with e.g. [insert company here] instead of bs.

I just got my PS3 recently and I'm already annoyed over this.

Firmware 2.0 seemed to take forever to download so I decided to time this one just to make sure I wasn't going crazy. It took 17 minutes and 34 seconds to download and install this .01 update which does nothing but fixes things that shouldn't have been broken in the first place. Bugs are bound to slip through sometimes but with the amount of major stuff that 2.0 broke it makes me wonder if Sony even tested it at all.

It wouldn't be as big of a deal if it didn't take so long to download these things. 360 updates take under 30 seconds to download and install.

Actually my PS3 updates are MUCH faster than that. Maybe sony should improve the servers, but for me it's working ok.

Well, if the reports are true, some people were experiencing some unplayably bad freezing in Assassins Creed with 2.0, and supposedly 2.0.1 addresses these (as well as remote play). Yes AC freezing still exists outside of 2.0, but that could be a reflection of how shoddily AC is in general and it is still possible that 2.0 broke more things in AC.

So this small update may have been to address stability for a select set of circumstances, but were nevertheless extremely important to those people.

*shrugs* but whatever - if it didn't fix enough for you, then you don't HAVE to update it straight away.

Microsoft for example is the king :lol I can't remember any issue on X360, but there are tons of windows vista known problems that are not solved, and well known xp problems that are NEVER going to be patched :lol

Apple launched leopard with less errors than vista, and later, and they have released a service pack solving them already :lol

Thats the thing. Before 2.0 AC worked. After that update it didnt, @least for me. It hang up like 20 times. Yeah well off to playing GT5 then... oh wait DEMO Corrupted all of the sudden... guess i redownload and reinstall(who invented that shit on consoles, where teh selfcontained files????) it then etc. let me put this into AVGN terms: Fuxxxx PEACE OF DAWG SHxT. You get the picture... (still have to check out everything after updating 2.01, hope all works fine now)

so how exactly it is related to PS3(or even Xbox360?) RIIIGHT it isnt(well maybe for f-boys it is.). kthxfyattention.

Mine's woken itself up twice since I installed 2.01, so it looks like that fix has done its job -_-

*turns off Remote Start again*

I don't have a problem with frequent updates, but I just wish they'd come up with a patching system rather than making you download the ~120MB firmware files so frequently. I'm only on a 2Mb connection so it takes a good half hour to download through my computer and even more to do it directly from PSN.

Obviously the one on the website has to be the full installer so that people can't brick their machines, but surely they can have a patch to just apply the fixes to go from 2.00-2.01 which can't be more than a few meg. Have the PS3 tell the update server what firmware it's currently running and then give it the relevant patch to download. Apple does this with OS X updates - there's a full installer on their website which is usually 150-200MB but if you download it through the Software Update interface you'll only download 30-50MB.

I want to know how Microsoft handles their updates for the 360 because those download and install in a couple of minutes max, major update or bugfix.

2.00 added custom themes, playlists and folders, as well as adding the information board and changing the PS2 upscaling.
2.01 fixed stability issues, and fixed a few things that had problems, like PS2 upscaling changes.

You ask for a company. I name microsoft. I demonstrate how another company is doing something microsoft doesn't. Apple is not related to PS3/X360, microsoft does. Apple is just an example of a company that fixes things. Microsoft is the example you wanted of a company that doesn't fix things.

I'm so glad this thread has degenerated in to the usual gaf useless bitching and moaning.

i should have known better...

Yea, we should all be waiting three more months for these fixes! DAMN YOU, SORNY!
(so whats the deal with the three months thingie going on?)

maybe i underestimate the complexity of this (which i doubt) like Vaandaviii does(Vista vs. Leopard = Apple & Oranges), but why break it in the first place?

Most likely they have implemented something like Windows update on it. It wouldn't be too hard if the operating system is close to Windows under the hood.

Because they're a software company?

Plus the dashboard updates are only like 5mb

:lol So true.

For people who still have their PS3s waking up because of Remote Play turned on, I'm guessing it's still a router thing. Mine used to wake up, but has not woken up by itself at all since updating to 2.01.

CEO said:
so you guys are okay with downloading 120mb flashrom img?
Yes, for significant updates. I just don't want to do it every couple of weeks for fixes that don't even work (the Remote Start power on bug).

For those who are still having the remote start issues, if you have a router, do you have UPnP feature ON or OFF? Just curious.

CEO said:

WTF do you use your broadband connection for? Game trailers are bigger than that in HD. Porn vids average that size just for individual scenes. Really, unless you're being charged per MB, then use that wide pipe the way it was meant to be used. Complaining about 120MB? Are you for real? You can't be on dialup since it doesn't work with the PS3, so you're bitching will get no sympathy in this thread. God, Windows updates more than this and resets without asking me. This ain't so bad at all, and they are not all mandatory updates. PEACE.

I believe mine is on. Let me remote home and see.... Yup mine is set to on.

For all those complaining about downloading firmware on the ps3...just download on the pc then. Or if that is still slow for you...maybe get off the computer pick up a phone and get better internet service.

It's not that it's slow, it's that it's annoying. I don't play games that often (more often these days due to COD4), and it has seemed like there was an update needed every other time I've turned on the system and tried to play a game or access the store. As said, it's good that they are on top of issues, but the frequency of these full system updates is getting on my nerves.

Agreed. I wanted to play one more quick game of PES last night before going to bed, but had to d/l this thing instead. I'm glad people had their AC fixed or whatever, but it didn't do anything for me other than stop me from playing what I wanted to play.

Ok. Play more. Problem solved! :D
