[Update: Phil Spencer says no 4K mandate, devs can make 1080p game with Scorpio]

What? This makes no sense. MS needs to stop talking

Actually I would rather hear information like this, what I want is the truth.

All I wanted to know is if I actually needed to buy a Scorpio and MS have basically told me that I don't. Thank you MS.

What? He must have mispoke, that would be incredibly stupid if the Scorpio has zero benefits for 1080p gaming. They're shooting themselves in the foot because the market size is so much smaller if you can only sell to people with a 4K TV.

Huge missed opportunity if this is true.

Not really a direct comparison, given that PC games are a lot cheaper, and you don't have to pay a subscription in order to play online.

Depending on your gaming habits, it's plausible for PC gaming to be cheaper than console gaming.

The comment was about building a PC, not running a PC. And for the most like-for-like comparison in the context of the conversation you would purchase cross-buy games on both which makes the price of games irrelevant.

Your comment also suggests that indeed you can't build one for that price.

This is bad PR, on par with "always connected xXB1 DRM" for the Scorpio imho. MS better say something before the fire spreads. Its time for a 540 spin!

This is absolutely a non-story. There's no chance it'll do nothing for you if you're on 1080p. Even just a 4k output on 1080p looks noticeably crisper.

Phil's just trying to prevent owners which don't want to upgrade from feeling screwed.
That's even worse though if he's straight up lying to us, it has to be a mix up has to be.

My view is this is just a line being said now so that regular XB1 sales don't nosedive. Then once the Scorpio is closer to launch, MS will change their message and you'll see Scorpio enhanced games. It makes no sense at all otherwise.

I don't get these comments. Those interested in Scorpio aren't interested in the S anyway?

They might hold out till christmas 2017 to get the real deal instead of buying into a console with uncertain future now.
Chances are those customers look elsewhere for a console now, too.

I would rather 1080p 60fps with as much eye candy as possible. They mentioned 60 in the vid, so in all honesty I am leaning towards this being part of their damage control and nothing more.

You guys are so sensitive to PR these days. I thought we were above that by now. Scorpio will play fine on your 1080p tvs.

Fine... or at One levels of fine? 'cause that's what he is saying... that I must not bother buying a scorpio if I have a One 'cause its only benefit is the 4K...
That's why i think it's PR backfire bullshit...

He must have said "Even if you don't have a 4KTV scorpio is your console cause you will benefit for better performance and a machine for high definition VR. and if you upgrade your Tv in the future you'll have it in 4K"

But they are afraid of not selling any One S... so they need to "PR downgrade" the Scorpio to make the ppl buy now a One S and later a Scorpio

I'm so disillusioned right now, someone tell me what to think.

Jokes aside this is just crazy, Somy must rolling around in fits of laughter.

Sony seems to be in quite a pickle because they seem quite unaware what Microsoft is going to do, but quite frankly right now it seems that Microsoft doesn't know that either.

So Spencer wants people to buy a "S" of which the two main features Microsoft are touting are 4K playback and HDR that no-one without a recently bought 4K can benefit from.

So the "S" won't do anything for you if you don't have a 4K TV as well Phil?

The more I think about this, the weirder it sounds.

Even though it's likely less powerful, for prople with a 1080p TV who are already invested in the current consoles, the PS4 Neo is going to be far more of a benefit for people? Obviously that's all dependant on the games that people own and are goingto buy.

I've gone from hating the ideo of these two new consoles to loving the idea of improved performance for both and believing that Microsoft were a step ahead of Sony in the way that they were doing this to, believing that they don't really know what they're doing, again.

Not sure that I would have got the Scorpio anyway as I'm just not invested enough in the Xbox ecosystem this generation but bloody hell, I know people who were loving this stuff.

So, Scorpio is just a 4K Xbox One, will play the same exact games, just in 4K / 2160p.

Graphics won't be better, just 4x the number of pixels. Won't really be any better unless you have a 4K set.

Looks like I'll stick with Neo for the rest of this generation.

Mark Cerny save us with PS5!

Sony PR:

"We think 1080p/60 is the standard our gamers want, that's why starting today we launch PS4 Neo 399$, Every HDTV in every home will get the best experience possible"

Microsoft dies...

I'd love it if actually Sony do this.
It would just bury XBOX for at least 1 year and a half.

There's no way this is true or that they stick their guns on it even if it is their plan right now. Imagine the Neo version of games completely destroying the visuals of Scorpio games when played on non-4K tvs.

why? I swear to god if Sony goes the same route. I want 1080p 60fps with all the bells and whistels and not 4k with shitty fps.

If he said that Scorpio games are true 4K and not upscaling from 1080p will this mean that in the future Xbox games will come in two versions: for example FIFA 17 and FIFA 17 4K?

And will they be so stupid to disable the Scorpio from playing the normal FIFA 17 1080p version?

I really don't see all that extra power just being used to render at 4K instead of 1080p/900p as games do now on xbone. It seems like he's hinting that asset wise, games will be identical to their xbox one/s counterparts, except the render resolution will be 4K.

This has to be PR speak to help xbox one s sales. Otherwise most people who would be interested, those who haven't bought an xbone yet or those that would just like to upgrade, they would probably just wait for the Scorpio now that its been announced. He's basically trying to say "If you're at 1080p, just get an xbox one s".

This basically means Xbox One visuals at 4K rather than improved visuals at 1080P...seems like a waste right now.
The extra power goes towards pushing more pixels rather than improving the quality of the pixels.
But they said Scorpio had better pixels. The best pixels.

This is ass backwards, if correct.

So the implication would be it only spits out 4K signal and you can't adjust in the settings to 720 or, you know, the most used res 1080p?

With all the power they're putting in and it can't scale performance according to output?

If yes, I'm out. I like consoles, but making it obvious it's a dumb pc is Matrick-backwards.

So is he saying, that if I don't have a 4k TV, i'll see absolutely no difference in terms of graphics, frame rate and performance with a Scoripo when comparing it to my original day one Xbox from 4 years earlier?

Really?

Again.. the more I read this the more stupid it sounds.
How in the fuckity fuck can they offer such a "nice" hardware and then boobytrap the hell out of it with limitations..

Would be nice if MS could offer something good with actually limit it in a way or two..

That would mean the console has a binary option, "asking" the TV wether it can display 4K to then switch into "Scorpio mode".

That would be utterly bizarre.

I thought the Neo was the same? just 4K ps4.

is not only this... in a VR machine you don't tell ppl to buy it or not based on his TV...

The small amount of people who buy an Xbox one every month dropped considerably when they announced a bigger better console without an actual release date. This is "please understand" PR after someone said "hey dipshits, no one will buy anything now"

I have no doubt games will look better no matter the resolution or ms is totally head up asses

Not selling me on this Spencer. I have a 1080p set and I would love to have everything run at 1080 60. Is he saying that won't be an option for consumers and devs?

On the surface this statement sells me on going the Sony route which sounds more consumer friendly.

At this stage I'd rather the just announce that they fucked up making the Xbox One and are restarting the generation with Scorpio.

I don't want my games being the same as my original Xbox One which was subpar to begin with, I want something better.

I mean, that's just it. It's like MS is trying to pull out of the market on purpose with these decisions.

It's pretty much a given that Scorpio won't be doing 4K gaming the proper justice. They will have another Xbone on their hands with the 720p fiasco, trying to push res and frames without the proper hardware.

Then in 2 years ps5 releases with 12tf hbm2 gpus, and does 4k proper, and 4K a bit more prominent, I feel it's just a timing isue they keep flubbing.

High price + 4K TV needed = DOA.

The whole reason consoles are popular is the cheap barrier to entry.

Now there are 2 barriers of entry for the Scorpio.
This is true. I don't plan on buying 4k TV anytime soon and thus Scorpio won't arrive in our household anytime soon.

I thought the Neo was the same? just 4K ps4.

Neo has developer documents saying every game must run on both Ps4 versions. xbox is on record saying the opposite. plus the hardware difference is much bigger. plus they say they wouldn't do half generation upgrades.

Sending it out to die. Holy shit.
So the amount of people this caters to has just gotten smaller.
People who do PC gaming are more likely to get 4K displays in the next couple years. That all depends on how fast manufacturers and retailers start phasing out 1080p displays though. Seems like it will be an extremely niche product.
