[Update: Phil Spencer says no 4K mandate, devs can make 1080p game with Scorpio]

Are people still trying to find all these contradictory articles and not listen/watch the giant bomb interview or read the Eurogamer article? Like I said many pages ago (or what it the other thread)...it's not a difficult thing to understand, and I feel people are still harping on trying to be confused by what was said instead of trying to find real answers. The answers are out there. Go read/watch them. Make your choice(s) of console(s) and be merry. :)

tl;dr - Go watch the Giantbomb interview and all will be cleared.

It won't be there will be a subset who will be willfully confused and trying to recreate 2013. As seen by the thread about that article being 5 pages while any negative one is 20+ pages.

Are they just trying to create a new way to say backwards compatible?

If you are not making games to be exclusive to Scorpio hardware design why am I buying one?

Because you have a 4K TV and want to play 4K games. But if you don't, you also want to play games downsampled.
Also if you want to play VR, but don't have a PC or PS4.
But, please buy a XB1 Slim, because... umm, gimme a second here... I'll think of some reason.

Haha, on giant bomb, he also cited Halo Wars 2 as a game with cross platform multiplayer after the devs specifically ruled it out. Get a grip Phil.

Actually they said it won't be there at launch and never completely ruled it out for good.

Anyway, maybe he misspoke? Not that big of a deal.

That's the dick waving part, and to be honest, the shine will come off those features real quick.

Just seems like a continued move towards walled garden PC boxes with the modular aspect stripped out.

It's not really dick waving when they seem not only confident but offering the specs to do it.

Phil literally just said in the Giant Bomb video that one of the reasons they announced the Scorpio early was to be upfront with people that would think about buying an Xbox One S.

Anyway:

  • Cheapest 4K Bluray Player on the market.
  • 4K content streaming.
  • 40% smaller then the Xbox One.
  • No power supply unit.
  • Offers HDR gaming support.
  • Starts at $299

Is this serious?

How about price, one of the most important factors for most people buying consoles.

It's indicative of him not really being too clued in about what is actually going on with game development in the studios working on first party games. Which is consistent with what we heard from former Lionhead employees after it got shut down.

Sounds like he's ruling from above without being particularly in touch with the game development process.

Granted, Halo Wars 2 is being made by an outside studio, but in order to effectively communicate what is going on at Xbox, he should probably know what is going on at Xbox.

It's indicative of him answering a question on the spot and accidentally mentioning the wrong game.

Much like your comment is indicative of you making a mountain of a mole hill.

So, since it's not necessarily a new generation.

NBA 2K18 will be on one disc and scale to the Xbox One they you have?

There isn't going to be a Scorpio NBA 2K18 and a Xbox One only 2k18 it's going to an Xbox One game that will run on both platforms that takes advantage of the power of the more powerful console.

Ahh good point, it's for the casual audience.
What benefits would someone without a 4K display have with a Xbox slim though?
Since it is the cheapest 4K media player on the market.

I suppose that doesn't matter much though since they will probably just phase out the old model in favor of the slim.

You may just have one in your home right now if the eighth gen is still a thing
I don't.

Maybe I'm just a traditionalist, but the idea of potential console generations where Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are totally out of step with each other in terms of hardware seems like a fucking mess.

Scorpio is the high end graphic card of the X1 generation?

I would assume it will work like it does on the PC except automatic. Game detects which Xbox it is in and applies the proper graphical settings.

What if this console is for the people who doesnt have a xbox one, yet want to have one. Make sense huh

That's the dick waving part, and to be honest, the shine will come off those features real quick.

Just seems like a continued move towards walled garden PC boxes with the modular aspect stripped out.

Spencer said he wanted to bring innovative things going on in the PC space to the console, specifically highlighting 4K and VR. He has highlighted how they've made Forza 6 Apex run in 4K and wanted to bring that to the console. He said he thinks the PC has the best VR experiences and he wants to bring that to console players.

As for making a walled-garden PC, he has highlighted how some people want the streamlined console experience and others want the PC experience. He's wanting to enable people to choose where they want to play and bring them together.

For me that seems quite different than what Sony is doing to focus on their console.

No you're talking about 1st party. I'm referring to the Maddens and 2Ks.

It will be the same game on both platforms but one will take advantage of the power.

Most likely if it takes advantage of a 4K disc then it will just download the game rather then install it from the disc. I'm pretty sure it'll be able to recognize the disc, I'm not sure on the complete technical details when it comes to bluray vs 4k bluray reading.

how are they still fucking up the messaging?

They aren't?

I don't.

Maybe I'm just a traditionalist, but the idea of potential console generations where Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are totally out of step with each other in terms of hardware seems like a fucking mess.

In the end I think it is best for everyone. Traditionalist get support for systems for 6-8 years. Graphical whores get refreshes in between. Best of all when you buy a new console your old library is still there. That was the worst part of this generation all my old digital PS3 games were basically thrown away.

It is most definitely dick waving. Regardless of how big or small the gap is, the perception of power difference between XBO and PS4 did damage to the XBO's mindshare. Scorpio is clearly a response to that, and an attempt to blast through the brick walls some modern games are hitting.

They could have quite easily just kept in-step with Neo and possibly beat them to market, but MS want the console with the big tech numbers to use as a selling point, which is exactly how it was presented at E3.

Whats so hard to understand. If you buy the Scorpio to play a game that can output 4k resolution without owning a 4k TV, then the games resolution will scale to whatever your TV outputs.

Well it's "dick waving" but it's not dick waving in the way that they are saying one thing but just lying to look good.

i hope 'ford gt guy' is getting paid for this damage control - outstanding effort

Keep calling me a shill, it just makes you look immature.

The better thing to take away from the Giantbomb interview I think is that we won't be hearing about Scorpio any time soon, which is good as you can tell not all the execs had unified messaging to begin with. In essence most of the execs were either guessing or just telling the interviewer what they wanted to hear.

Microsoft should really wait until GDC or E3 next year to really openly talk about it more. Till then just focus on developing the thing and getting developers on board.

Let's not kid ourselves. There's definitely some dick waving going on at Microsoft as well.

Well his original meaning of it was more like they are just dick waving a number without anything to back it up.

God damn it. There is such a false narrative going on these past few days. It's becoming pretty irritating. I just want to throw up my hands.

People wonder why there are 8 threads and 38 pages.

Sony is in the wrong here. They should of delayed until 2017 for the Zen CPU. Sony just wanted to rush out to the market to take advantage of their momentum.

But, please buy a XB1 Slim, because... umm, gimme a second here... I'll think of some reason.

Because it's the cheapest 4K Bluray player on the market?

Because you may want to replace your larger Xbox One and power brick with a smaller console with no power brick?

Because you only want/need an entry level Xbox One as you migrate from 360 and want to keep your digital games?

Plenty of reasons if you don't choose to be will fully ignorant.

Not seeing damage control. The interview Spencer did with the GB crew is really good and clears up things for those that were not clear before. Simple as that. Maybe if you watched it it would clear things for you. If you have and are still confused, not sure what else you are looking for.

I hope you go over why you could've made a fruitful argument but decided to be snide about it

Reciprocating dialogue isn't damage control, trying to get one last malicious dig in at a user is ironically, damage control

I'm used to being called a shill for stating the obvious.

I'm too busy trying to figure out what gif I can post that will get the most responses.

A GIF of Phil Spencer using the Naughty America VR.

If the game runs in dynamic resolution and allows 60fps, then you'd see an improvement

The nice thing is if publishers/developers decide to be nice and patch their games to increase the resolution or whatever.

Especially games that are constantly still receiving new content and which high average user counts. I could definitely see games like Overwatch getting a patch for improved graphics and performance.
