A UPS cargo plane crashed Tuesday near Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) in Kentucky, killing at least three people and injuring at least 11 others.

UPS Flight 2976 crashed with three crewmembers on board at about 5:14 p.m. ET onto the roof of the Kentucky Petroleum Recycling building after departing from SDF, Gov. Andy Beshear said during a news conference Tuesday evening.

At least two employees at nearby business Grade A Auto Parts are unaccounted for, said Beshear, who called the incident "catastrophic."

Fully fueled plane on take off is wild.

Engine fire started before lift off clearly but I wonder if they could have known early enough to have aborted take off safely.

A 34 year old MD-11. It's a bitch to fly and one of the worst safety records for Boeing. Which is quite the feat for the company that brought you the 737 Max.

Holy shit, that's haunting footage. I'm thankful it wasn't a passenger plane, but that's still absolutely terrible for the 3 who died, their families, and all of those injured.

It could have been much worse, but this is still tragic and horrifying.

I guess it's lucky that it hit a scrapyard instead of some place where there could be a lot more people, but good lord that looks horrifying. wonder what's the cause of this?

Once a plane gets to V1 takeoff speed it's better to actually take off and go around for an emergency landing. There's not enough runway left after that to stop. Looking at the helicopter video you can see a large part of the engine cowling on the side of the runway. That plane either hit something or an engine exploded as it was taking off.

Damn that's some horrible footage. The engine was on fire before take off yet the plane kept the "nose" up, were they trying to take off with the engine like that? So weird.

Edit: I mean, there's a lenght to the lane where the plane takes off, probably it had to lift off or directly crash at something ahead. Really sucks.

Any posts from people whose packages was in the explosion? Imagining a lot of irate ebay customers. Feels like they neglected some safety checks before takeoff. I seen clips of pilots refusing the plane due to issues.

My guess is this is where that truck driver was (Red star) and the aircraft took the red line. (Neither are exact).

How the hell does an engine fall off? I get lapses in maintenance can occur, but really?

Probably didn't pass the checks, but pushed to just proceed. Just like how regular truck drivers are suppose to finish checks in 15 minutes, but actually takes way longer so they just rush thru it and just mark the book.

RIP.

Chilling footage. After watching a couple of aviation channels I have realized how easily this can happen. The slightest mistake or faulty equipment, and you are flying a metal coffin.

WTF, how does the engine rip itself off like that?

Never in a million years would I have had "Engine flying away from the plane like a rocket" as the answer to this.

So many infuriating people hampering things when there was already so much confusion. Right off the start the idiot that turned right in front of the cop and then took forever to backup had me raging :messenger_unamused:
