Upstream Color is a terrible movie.

Ok.

I asked how it was pretentious.

You do realize that pretentiousness is not a quality innately possessed by something, right? Its a quality an observer projects onto something through their own perception of it. Pretension by definition is the apparent feigning of deeper, more interesting, more thoughtful, more important qualities than are actually possessed.

Which is why its such a cheap criticism. By the nature of calling something pretentious you're shutting yourself off from the possibility these qualities are actually there. When you call something pretentious you're not saying "I don't see it for reasons X why and Z." You're saying those qualities were never there to be appreciated in the first place.

He can't find funding. He originally wanted 20 million and then lowered it to 14 and no studio was willing to commit.

Ah damn, maybe I'll get around to reading it, but I've been avoiding it thinking It'll be made.

pretentious is about as overused as hipster.

sounds like god of war 3

Hipster has already been uttered in this thread describing the movie.

Wasn't as good as Primer, but terrible? Some nice GAF hyperbole right here.

Most people don't know how to use that word these days. They just feel cool using it.

Next up: Shane Carruth is a douche bag.

Already used.

i'm just saying, strapping bro-dude babe-fucking button mashing action to greek mythology/tragedy is attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed. :P

re: UC, I thought it was nice, but I had to watch it twice as I wasn't in the right mood for it the first time. it's a slow burner.

I'll agree that it's foolish to stake criticism solely on accusations of pretension. The film is plenty awful without stooping to that.

Wasn't that the point? They were both being forced to do things they didn't want to do and had no idea why they were doing it.

Have any examples?

Yeah, there was one interview that really stuck out to me. I believe it was on a Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith podcast. I'm on mobile right now so I can't look at my library. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll try to help. Might be a different podcast but I'm pretty sure that was it.

I had no idea this movie was so controversial. I thought it was pretty good, but some of it went over my head (i.e. what the themes built to).

I think it works really well as a metaphor for addiction, even if that wasn't the intention.

I liked it.

It's a really complex film, and I'd agree it is a bit on the pretentious side.

I'm not sure I understood it all, but discussing the movie after seeing it was interesting and a lot of fun.

I watched it this morning and I disagree. Super well put together. Acting was good. Directing, music, the overall package was good. And it makes You think. It leaves questions unanswered. Good movie in my book.
