its so funny to me after someone confused Samuel Jackson with Laurence Fishburne this scene was like seeing the future.

I watch Menace II Society once a month. You don't get movies like that nowadays. Hughes Brothers were just on top of the world.

I really do think Dead Presidents was the better of the two, personally.

Boyz 'n' the Hood is kinda hard to watch now though, outside of Fishburne & Tyra Ferrell's performances. Singleton hasn't made anything with as much power since then, and when you look back, you realize it wasn't that powerful in the first place. It's closer to a hardcore Afterschool Special than anything, really.

Love Jones is a damn good drama about being fuckin STUPID about love. One of the more emotionally honest rom-coms I've seen. Whatever happened to Lisa Nicole Carson, anyway?

On the complete other (ass) end of the spectrum, Booty Call is legitimately one of the best comedies of the '90s. I laughed at it just as much as I laughed at Friday (also in the top 10 for that decade) but it doesn't ever get brought up nearly as much.

I don't know if this counts. It probably should, considering it was directed by Bill (you know you done fucked up, don'tcha) Duke, and starred Laurence Fishburne, but Deep Cover was a damn good modern noir film. Everything about it feels like a grimy ass dimestore novel you shouldn't be reading but you can't stop. And it has one of Jeff Goldblum's best performances, period. Not even lying.

Plus the soundtrack introduced Snoop Dogg to the world, so there's that.

Set it Off might honestly be F. Gary Gray's best film, too. Which is saying something considering he did Friday, but still - I look at his filmography, and Set it Off is the one with the least flaws, and the strongest performances, especially Latifah's.

CB4 wasn't good, really. Fear of a Black Hat was always the better parody.

One of my all time faves 'Fresh'.

This is a fuckin' GREAT call. Goddamn that movie was coldblooded.

Dead Presidents came on TV at 2 in the morning one time, I remember it being pretty good.

This movie is incredibly important and pretty freaky. It scared the fuck out of me as a kid. It's a wonderful movie which details a lot of the frustrations of the early 90s. Some of the topics are still relevant today.

Does Do the Right Thing count?

'Cause man, that movie... probably one of the best movies made in the last 30 years. It manages to be totally fair to every character, even as it burns with an angry energy unlike any other film.

It's a goddamn masterpiece.

Came in here looking for this. Shocked that it took so long to come up. It's brilliant. Nominated for Best Screenplay 1989 at the Oscars.

Manages to be a on point parody of "hood" movies and other popular black films at the time, while still making a statement on the very same subject matter of the movies its parodying.

I watched the majority of the movies mentioned in this thread already and I'm glad to see that some of the classics have been given some love. Definitely one of my favorite movie genres, if only for the nostalgia
my mom would routinely make me watch these as a kid so I would steer clear from being involved in hood activities

Also, can anyone help me out with a movie I've been trying to find for years? It was about a teacher trying to help educate some inner city kids locked up in a juvenile detention center and in the end
one of them gets stabbed at a pep rally or something by one of the other inmates

Better than Scarface.

Someone left a VHS copy at a beach condo my grandmother used to rent out for the summer. It became a tradition of mine to watch it every time I went. It also provided teenage me fap material, since we didn't have internet out there (this was before smartphones).

Found the blu ray at Target for like $5 a couple months ago. Perfect addition to my collection.

How did I miss this thread?!
One of my all time faves 'Fresh'.

The kid in this is a great actor. Check him out in The Corner.

The dude in the sensory sensory deprivation tank was in prison for 11 years for manslaughter.

My grandfather made me watch this Melvin Van Peeples film.

I really enjoyed this one, guilty pleasure; I still watch it:

Also, another one that was actually a pretty good flick, but went pretty much completely forgotten:

I remember loving 'The Disorderlies' and 'The Last Dragon' as a kid.

I like 'He Got Game' and 'White Men Can't Jump' if those count.

Also, does 'Bebe's Kids' count?

Gosh damn, y'all bringing all kinds of feelings in here. Fresh is great, I used that for my presentation in my Single Production class. As a matter of fact most people in my class and major only know of Boyz N Da Hood and Do the Right Thing. Only the black students knew what I was talking about when I mentioned other hood movies like Menace to Society and Jason's Lyric.

I can't think of Baby Boy anymore without thinking of this girl who told me "n**** you got heart" when I asked her for her number.
I actually think of more funny stuff than serious stuff when I think of that movie, like Jody and his baby mama scene when they were making love. I can't see that shit no more without thinking of that time when I was on the bus in high school and this dude recited all of Taraji's lines from it. They show it way too much on BET too.

Something that is not on here that should be is this.

For those who seen Fresh
Why does Fresh kill his dog. That shit always bothered me. Why the fuck did it happen?

The femme fatale is so fine in Shane, I might have had to leave Jada.
Pocahontas

Menace II Society, Boyz N The Hood, South Central, Juice etc. Plus movies like Barbershop, Set it Off, Love & Basketball or more comedy style like house party, Friday, Don't be A Menace etc.
