HONOLULU (AP) - The Army will not abandon plans to conduct a training exercise with live pigs, despite protests from PETA.

During the drill, the Army will shoot live pigs and treat their gunshot wounds in a medical trauma exercise for soldiers stationed in Hawaii but headed to Iraq.

Animal experts will be on hand, and the pigs will be anesthetized through the entire exercise. An Army spokesman says "It's to teach Army personnel how to manage critically injured patients within the first few hours of their injury."

PETA calls the practice outdated and says there are better and more humane options.

But the Army says this is the closest they can come to replicating what soldiers may actually come across in Iraq.

Necessary or barbaric? I report. You decide!

If it pisses PETA off, I know it must be alright!

Also, there isn't a much better way to give soldiers real hands on experience with battle related wounds on a breathing organism. I mean, they could use human corpses to do it, I'm sure PETA would be fine with that! :lol

Barbaric? Yes. But it's no worse than a slaughter house. At least in this instance the pigs are allowing people to learn to save lives, instead of stuff people's bellies.

What happens to the pigs that survive?
Well I think the pigs are supposed to survive. This exercise is to train soldiers how to care for wounded friendly individuals. Clearly, the goal is to keep the pigs alive as long as possible.

How awesome would it be, to be the guy who walks up the unconscious pics and pop caps in their ass, and get paid for it.

This is absolutely barbaric.

Absolutely barbaric? Really? Shooting a anesthetized pig, then trying to save it is absolutely barbaric? I wish I lived in a world where I thought this was even slightly barbaric.

I am more in the favor of geting death row convicts and putting 25 soldiers with 24 blanks and one live and listening to there pleas and then shoting him. It would be random of course and cheaper.

This would be a far better way to "prepare" Soldiers.

The PETA members could always volunteer to take a pig's place. Display the courage of your convictions, hippies!
