HONOLULU (AP) - The Army will not abandon plans to conduct a training exercise with live pigs, despite protests from PETA.
During the drill, the Army will shoot live pigs and treat their gunshot wounds in a medical trauma exercise for soldiers stationed in Hawaii but headed to Iraq.
Animal experts will be on hand, and the pigs will be anesthetized through the entire exercise. An Army spokesman says "It's to teach Army personnel how to manage critically injured patients within the first few hours of their injury."
PETA calls the practice outdated and says there are better and more humane options.
But the Army says this is the closest they can come to replicating what soldiers may actually come across in Iraq.
Necessary or barbaric? I report. You decide!
