US Congress rules that pizza is a vegetable

I read this in German news before GAF? What's next, cats and dogs living together?

It's quite stupid, even knowing that nobody believes this. I can´t be outraged that schools serve pizza, we sometimes ordered some by ourselves when we had school on the afternoon (we didn´t have a cafeteria, but they built one after I left school).

"I have the worst fucking Congress."

Good job. Putting such tremendous stupidity on display just to appease the wishes of fast food production companies. Now excuse while I go grow some vegetables in my oven.

Yes. Yes I do.
Now all this talk has made me hungry for this vegetable of the gods.

I never understood the appeal of a joke account whose purpose it to make people angry.

Wait... if people smother marijuana in tomato sauce does it stop being an illegal substance and start being a wholesome vegetable?

You're wrong.

This food is very low in Saturated Fat and Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin K, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Iron, Magnesium and Manganese, and a very good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Potassium and Copper.

Bilbo. He could have said 3+3 = 6 and he would have still been wrong on the merits of the overall statement is that pizza = vegetables. I could tell you the sky is blue in order to support some bullshit I'm trying to sell you. I'm wrong? How am I wrong?

Ok, so he's right, tomato paste is nutrient rich. He's still trying to tell you you can bake goddamn sand into bread, essentially. You're going to give it a pass because the bullshit line sailed through? Can I sell you a fucking bridge?

Also you forgot Lycopene.

Actually it's a common misconception that vegetables are a good source of iron. They're really not.

I'm not trying to make you angry. Of course I don't think pizza is a vegetable. I was joking. But it can be nutritious if made properly.

As for pot.... isn't it a vegetable already?

Congress probably rationalizes their bending to special interests by believing that they're doing an economic good by not harming potatoe farmers and pizza companies.

Problem is that health problems are a massive drain on the state and a preventive approach to health care is the only way to address this. eg, getting young Americans to eat healthier, reduce obesity, reduce incidence of heart disease, diabetes, etc. etc., and therefore reduce the incredible economic burden generated by obesity.

Obesity epidemic + aging population = bad times

Not even talking about quality of life here since it can't be quantified and as a result can be ignored more easily by people.

I think I used to make this argument as a kid - that pizza with a meat topping contained all 4 food groups, so it had to be healthy, right?

We're all going to die.

Realistically though, a pizza with veggies on it would not be too bad right? Right? Or do they mean just the sauce is the vegetable?

This would make it so pizza is a vegetable regardless of its toppings. Cheese pizza = broccoli

Just the sauce. But "put a lipstick on a pig and it's still a pig" and all that.

Stupid ruling.

As stupid as this is what's even more stupid is how much people care about the label. Vegetables can be unhealthy as well, why do we just care about the labels instead if what it contains?

Big push towards eating more fruit and vegetables in Norway, problem is fruit especially contains a lot of fructose (basically sugar), which isn't healthy in large quantities. Vegetables are usually more healthy, but there's still a lot of sugar in carrots.

Can't we just eat less sucrose and fructose, sodium and saturated fat instead of more x and y?

And my favorite frozen pizza can ironically be eaten by vegetarians, doesn't make it any less unhealth :P

Salt ;)
Sodium, what the rest of the world calls natrium, isn't healthy in large quanities.

This is the problem. Your parents are more responsible than our GOP majority congress.

I just had a flat, round vegitable with sausage, pepperoni, ham and several cheeses on it. Veggies this good, I could go vegetarian.

I happen to really like pizza is all. I'd hate to see Obama ban it like he wants to. I'm willing to close my eyes, put my hands over my ears and let the Republicans help me out on this one.

Not that this makes it any better but this is not new:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/45306416/ns/health-diet_and_nutrition/#.TsVjc_K9YtV

The relevant portion:

The bill also would allow tomato paste on pizzas to be counted as a vegetable, as it is now.

I'm not sure how long it's been like this, but msnbc makes it sound more like Congress is blocking reforms than making new decisions. That doesn't make this any less stupid, but it does mean that this has been the case in school lunches for at least a while now.

Yeah anybody who watched that naked chef guy's school lunch reality show (can't remember his name or what it was called) has borne witness to this. Really doesn't make it any better.

So you're still eating your lunches in school cafeterias?

Yeah, maybe without cheese or bread (dough included). Also no added sugars since its already full of it, an no salt. Then load it with vegetables and some protein and you are good.

Well, I guess am eating a lot more vegetables than I thought I was. I usually have onions and green peppers, and all sorts of other stuff on my pizza so I guess I can count it as a salad?

This is all about those healthy school lunch bills that the Democrats pushed through. Now, Congress is going back to weaken those guidelines because the apparently black President is a Nazi who wants to ban snackfoods. His admin and the Democrats did all that press conference stuff and legislative battling to get healthier food regulations, and this is the dismantling phase carried out by the majority opposition.

Just an example at the cynicism and problems with our Congress and political system over all.

I also gotta say I love Whole Foods pepperoni pizza. Goddamn foldable giant slices of oily goodness. Orange oil dripping from your chin when you bite, it's good, and I don't care.

Too busy eating pizza to think about reform. Sorry.

Why does GAF hate bread again?

I remember summers at my grandmother's garden. she would grow the most beautiful, succulent pizzas you ever saw. she would grow both kinds, new york style and deep dish style.
we'd gently pluck fold the little 'slices" as they are called, off the pizza trees and just put them ever so gently in paper tissue to drain the natural grease that would come off the "cheese" (that's what us pizza farmers call the stringy residue that comes off it) it fills my heart with joy to see congress do the right thing and include this very important vegetable in children's diet.

Isn't that what they were trying to do? Mandate that it be nutritious? But Congress blocked that on behalf of frozen food companies so that they could continue selling the same un-nutritious pizzas so long as they've got some tomato paste in them. That's my understanding, at least.

Interestingly, McCain pizza designed a new, nutritious brand of french fries for schools in Canada. Instead of trying to prevent new, health-focused guidelines, they adapted. Unbelievable!

They've been doing that anyway.
Pretty terrible argument here, dude.

Wait...whu..what? They want to reduce, amongst other things, starchy veggies (fries), so they then rule that if you put 2 tablespoons of 'tomatoe sauce' (they could have said chopped tomatoes or something to prevent it from being low quality preservative laden sauce..) onto a big piece of crappy dough, its then OK.

SO...putting two tablespoons of 'sauce' onto a pile of french fries makes them OK again, pizza fries are a veggie? What if I put sauce on top of a moon pie? veggie?

God help those children whose parents cannot help them...cause congress isn't capable of it.

(also, the salt industry should not be lobbying for ANYTHING)
