I'm guessing the events over the past two months at the University of Pittsburgh aren't helping.
For those not in the know, someone used an email anonymizer service and basically crippled the campus with bomb threats. Pitt had to spend millions on security. Apparently they agreed to stop if the university took down the $50,000 reward, but if this starts becoming more widespread, these bills will easily pass with most of the public's support.

There needs to be some sort of tool/bill law enforcement can use, but it needs to have protections for the people. This one had next to none, especially the final version that passed.

And I'm totally down with that. What I'm not cool with are bills that grant the government new powers without sufficient safeguards against abuse, or ham-fisted measures created by people who don't understand the first thing about how the internet works.

Don't be a pussy. If this passes (which I doubt, but IF), people need to get out of the chairs and desks and actually show they have a voice that is more audible than their tweets.
Biggest probably in this country right now is how apathetic everyone has become, even for the things they care or believe in.
Stuff like this wouldn't have a chance at getting passed if everyone who was against it actually took to the streets or did something to that effect. Instead all we do is FB/twitter bitch about it. This is why that defense bill (National Defense Authorization Act) which Obama signed, passed. Despite its absurdities and everyone going crazy on the internet about it, eventually all that subsided.

... perhaps you should stay more alert and aware of whats going on. A few democratic Senators like Hayden, Franken, and Sanders are trying to push amendments that would make this bill more privacy friendly. Obama supports this bill over the CISPA because this one is more geared towards privacy. And no, the GOP didn't filibuster due to their concern for privacy. They filibustered due to their concern (thanks Chamber of Commerce) that it would cost too much.
