US+Japan PSP/DS 3rd party sales comparision.

I never understood the argument that third parties are scared of competing with Nintendo games. Wouldn't they also be scared to compete with GTA or Madden if that were the case?

imo, this thread shows, generally, even with current gen home console type graphics (and budgets), handheld games don't sell as well as home console games. they're about 1/4-1/3 of the sales, which is what's been happening for years, and psp hasn't been able to change this.

but i think the most interesting thing is how clearly japan has fallen back in love with nintendo. with a large percentage of nintendo published games from the ~18 million sold on ds, for a country that's less than half the population of the us (usually the biggest market) is staggering!

i think there is a type of game that sells on a nintendo handheld, but i don't believe consumers say 'oh, here's a game published by nintendo, i must buy it'. if that was the case why did ouendan, hamtaro and advance wars sell poorly in japan and why weren't super princess peach, kirby cc and yoshi touch n go really huge sellers?. in fact i'd go so far as to say many consumer think nintendo makes all the games on its hardware and sony does on theirs.

also nintendogs and brain training were new franchises and as such had no previous association with nintendo. they sold because they were good and from the weekly sales charts it's very clear word of mouth spread and spread until they became million+ sellers.

from the sales the psp has an audience, which is one that likes ps2 games, so from that perspective ds hasn't 'lost' anything that sold well on gba. the truth is non-japanese publishers have never invested much effort in nintendo handhelds other than movie/tv tie-ins and a few other kid friendly games. so, psp and ds are, surprisingly, living pretty separately and each is doing well. this is great, because it give consumers more choice and developers try harder to make the best games they can, which has been especially evident with nintendo.

No because there will be only 1 GTA and 1 Madden released each year on the PSP, how many Nintendo games are going to be released on the DS?

The only thing this shows is that 3rd pary devs need to start making good games for the DS as they have been doing for the PSP if they want some sales.

The overall 3rd party sales for PSP goes in relation with the quality of the games ofered. THere's no more to say.

If these companies doesn't make efforts to do great games, they shouldn't expect a lot more from NDS.

P.S: 3rd party games on PSP are great games, on DS there are just a few great.

Psp had GTA, a good Madden game, good NFS and Ridge Racer games, Winning Eleven and Tales of... on DS EA made only shitty games and the other companies made only shovel-ware or niche games, it's their fault if their line-ups on DS don't sell.
