Fucking missouri.

Comments like this are bullshit.

To throw down a blanket statement about an entire state -- or region -- is equivalent making derogatory statements about a minority group based on the actions of an individual within that group.

You don't sound enlightened. You sound ignorant.

I'm not trying to single you out, but I'm not going to multi-quote a third of the first page.

Cause we don' take kindly to yer types 'round 'ere!

No, it's not. If you can't see the difference you may want to think about why people consider some countries to be backwards even if they have some very smart people living there.

Do you live in Missouri, and/or regularly travel to/visit the state?

No, it's not. If you can't see the difference you may want to think about why people consider some countries to be backwards even if they have some very smart people living there.

I don't see how one can selectively decide to make blanket assumptions/statements about some large groups of people based on the actions of a few people within said group, while getting upset when people do the same thing to other groups.

I don't call what my mom says, I am no moving back (plus why would I--I live comfortably in NYC as a freelancer/ 12/hr Trader Joe's employee)

I get what you're trying to say, but you really picked a bad state for which to say it.

In fairness, I admit my being from Nebraska may have influenced my opinion of the place. Mizzou fans have definitely done the state no favors. They're like Texas Tech fans without the class.

yeah, ive never heard that stuff either. weird

do you feel the same about "lol florida" comments too?

Missouri isn't the most openminded place I've ever been to, so I'm not surprised.

Come to think of it, neither is where I live now, but I don't spend much time outside of Chicago if I can help it.

But totally not surprised about a mosque being burnt there. Missouri, on top of being a very conservative state, was largely unaffected by the same type of national shame that other Southern states suffered as a result of the Civil Rights movement. So, they base level of ignorance was kind of unchecked.

It's not a statement about the people, but the likelihood of certain events happening in that area.

For instance. Are all Saudis misogynistic fuckheads who stone women to death? No, of course not. But if someone was to say 'Saudi Arabia is fucked up' it would be an accurate statement.

Did they? I thought Missouri never left the Union. You surely had Southern sympathizers, but if you were to group Missouri as a 'they,' you would have to say they were a pro-union state and government.

Missouri was technically a slave state, and factions from Missouri fought for the Confederacy, but they never formally joined the Confederacy.

As a muslim i can only agree with the poster that said muslims should move out states where they are in constant danger. There is no point in living in states where you are constantly abused and places of worship subject to arson.

If you cannot practise your faith without repercussions then just move out.
It's not that easy. People have jobs there, stores, business, friends, their kids go to school, etc. Why should they move out just because some thugs say they should?

Please, that's the "Israeli" approach, tough it out and enjy the fruits of the best country in the world.

That's actually a commandment from God in the quran. To put it short if you cannot practise your faith without repercussions then leave and move to somewhere else safer.

That's why alot of muslims generally do not sympathise with french muslims who complained about the hijab bannings

Kentucky was also a state with slavery, but did not fight with the confederacy. If Missouri is like Kentucky, people who live close to the national border would have tried to form an illegitimate (As in unrecognized by the US) government in territories held by the Confederate military in an attempt to legitimize their occupation.

Jobs buisness schools and money comes and goes. Quality of life, safety and being happy is more important.

Terrible news. Sickening that people would do this.

Yup exactly. Moving isn't cheap. It requires time and money. They shouldn't have to move because of some small minded, hateful, bigots.

Right on! And the members of that church should go and burn down a mosque in retaliation! And the members of that mosque should go a burn down a church in retaliation! And the members of that church should go and burn down a mosque in retaliation! And the members of that mosque should go a burn down a church in retaliation! And the members of that church should go and burn down a mosque in retaliation! And the members of that mosque should go a burn down a church in retaliation! And on and on and on. You've solved the problem.

As long as the masters have the slaves at each other's throats, there is no threat to their dominance.

Yeah the Confederacy has odd domestic allies, the 5 Civilized Tribes were on their side, and Arizona, not like that one is a surprise.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

As much as I hate to say this, get out of the South. Too many fundies down there.

Get a map.

Missouri was itself uniquely split in the Civil War. Truly a microcosm of the country. Both the Union and the Confederacy put a star on their flag to represent Missouri, and there were two separate state governments during the war.

MO sent plenty of troops to fight on both sides, too, although in the end it wound up being about three times as many to the Union than the Confederacy. Sadly, there was more bloodshed in the state than almost anywhere, and most of it was within the state itself independent of the larger war.

Anyway, the short answer is, unlike most states, MO was both a Union state AND a Confederate State, and there is no short answer. But it's not really part of the "Old South" at all.

Yeah we don't consider ourselves to be southern. It works out because no southerner considers us to be southern, either.

Yet you will be called southern by many people from parts a bit further north. I recall at College Park I got called a southerner and a hick by people from people as close as New Jersey.

This is false.

French Muslim segregate themselves in pocket communities. They are unwilling to integrate in large whole communities and adapt. Yes racism exists there no doubt but French Muslims then propagate their own variation of racism on the locals. Eye for an eye justice.

They say voting is haraam and not sunnah. They complain about those in power who get elected yet don't want to vote? Seriously?

This is why few Muslims have sympathy...

If they voted I would sympathize with them as I understand community cohesion takes decades and even then it remains an issue but not voting then complaining...? I'm sorry thats just unacceptable and you deserve to be treated differently as you are not taking an interest in matters that effect you in major ways.

Yeah, Muslims should know better. As a Mexican I know to stay the fuck away from states like Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and wherever else Mexicans aren't welcome. That's why I stay in California.
Seriously? I'm from Arkansas and now live in California. Racism against Hispanics is MUCH worse here than in Arkansas.

Actually I was going to post this same thing.

I know some people are joking, but many times people makes statements like this not realizing they are doing the exact thing they blame others for, and are being hypocrits.

Anyone that says stuff like that is the midwest, that is missour, that is the US. You are grouping people together just like the same people you are reacting against. Be smarter than that.

People that don't like Islam or don't like people from the Middle East, well you know just because there are some evil people they are not all. Just like there maybe some people or a person in Joplin, doesn't make the town, the state, the region bad. Think about it.

Hey, look at all the idiots bashing Missouri. Racist assholes are all over the country.

The shooting at the Sikh Gurdwara was a heartbreaking tragedy and burning of this Mosque is a another sickening event. Sickos are all over the country. Perhaps the next time another one of numerous hate crimes happen in California, the appropriate response should be "fuckin Cali".
