User (or news outlet?) creates APF 2K8 OJ Simpson video to harm Take-Two?

Mrbob said:
There is no such thing as a permanent team in APF2K8. You make your own team.

There are the CPU teams if you play in season mode. I don't know if they are randomly created or if they are permanent teams. But I am 100% certain that the video is showing a user-created 'Assasins' team with OJ on it since the video shows the user playing as OJ and you cannot play as one of the CPU teams.

2) He is one of the best football players and best known people in the US. He is a global Icon for many reasons, and not putting him the game would have been moronic.
That logic reminds me of ads for some sitcom with Jay Mohr as a tv exec.

Guy: I have the perfect actor for you, OJ Simpson.
Jay Mohr: No.
Guy: He'll play a villain...
Jay Mohr: No.
Guy: Little kids in Iraq know his face
Jay Mohr: Yeah, they know to run away from him.

There's a joke in here somewhere about finding the real killer, but I'm all out. :lol

Peter O'keefe has a line about SUV's that I heard when I had buddy running wild with O.J. on me. Bad taste or not, he should be in the game.

Not only is he one of the best running backs of all time, but he was one of the first crossover athletes from proffesional sports to the silver screen. 2K needed big names in it's game to get any kind of recognition. Any buzz, any controversy, absolutely anything that will cause people to look at this game is good for the bottom line.

Some sick bastards will buy the game just to see the knife slash after O.J. scores a touchdown.

This is being blown WAY out of proportion, the name of the team is the Assassins, not the Murders. Jeez.

But Michael Vick taking them to the pound is hilarious. :lol

Simpson was acquitted of the murders in 1995; two years later, a civil jury found him liable for the wrongful death of Goldman.

This still confuses the hell out of me.

The standard for finding guilt in a civil case is lower then that for a criminal case.

Think of it as sueing someone for getting away with murder. The victims' blood was in the car you gotta get the bastard somehow.

spec, why did you even give this the time of day? You trying to drive down stock prices so you can buy in low? LOL

Still, this is a non-story and shouldnt have been given the time of day. BFD if Simpson is in a football game...supposed to forget everything about him because he murdered someone? Quick, take out all the Nazis in war games now!

It is interesting discussion. I also think it might backfire on thestreet.com. There is no such thing as bad publicity, right?

Are we certain OJ is a player in the game?

I mean, if someone can create a Michael Vick, then they can certainly create a player called OJ.

Yes, OJ is in the game. But you can create your own players and that is what that Michael Vick must be since he is in the NFL and APF 2K8 doesn't have the rights to current NFL players.

jesus christ.. can we all man up and get over the OJ thing already? It ain't the first time a brother had to kill a bitch.

I disagree, this is Oj Simpson the football player. You know the time before the murders when OJ was a movie star, Hall of Fame HB and a NFL broadcaster.

Now if this was a based on serial killers starting Oj, then you might have something.

This doesn't float dude. No one is going to put Chris Benoit in a video game now and no one should put OJ in one. It was a huge mistake by Take-Two and they're most certainly going to be punished for it. I would bet that he's removed from the game by the time of its release.

Uh . . . the game has been released and OJ is in it.. Certainly it was a controversial decision to put OJ in the game, but that is what they decided to do.

BTW, I'm glad I don't have a link to a certain parody videogame cover. :D

Ahh, the GameTrailers link says the release date is August 14th. I thought it was coming out this week, but didn't see anything about it at EB when I picked up NCAA so I assumed it had been pushed back. You can bet that Nancy Grace and any other number of talking heads are going to flip about this -- I seriously would not be surprised if a recall were issued.

I certainly hope Nancy Grace talks about it . . . more publicity would be nice. You didn't even know it was available and you went into a store to pick up NCAA!

But there is not going to be any recall because someone was offended because some guy created a team called the Assassins and put OJ on it.

OJ plays football in the game. That's all he does.

It is a good thing OJ played football and not hockey because imagine if people talked about OJ on the Buffalo Sabres. OMG Look, their logo has knives on it!

Did they put the anamatronic assassin in the game just to create this controversy? Well, they do have other stadiums with bees that flap their wings, a phoenix that moves it Talons, Iron workers that hammer an anvil, jets that shoot missiles, etc. The assassin with a knife seems to just go along with that.

Did they put in an anamatronic with stabbing just because OJ is in the game?

Maybe the article has a point . . . maybe this is some ingenious marketing plan to create this controversy but with plausible deniability. I doubt we'll ever know.

It might not have been planned in initial designs, but I doubt all the programmers and testers somehow missed the possible "controversy" of OJ ending up on the Assassins squad with the animatronic stabbing after he scores. It's way too ****ing obvious.

Like every decision, Take-Two should have considered the upside and downside to each choice.

Include OJ - add 1 to the number of 'classic pro stars' bulletpoint in marketing.
- possibly attract people who are still fans of OJ? (I'm sure there are a few, at least.)
- possibly attract controversy once the media discovers and blows things out of proportion? (They must have considered this - if they didn't, they haven't learned anything from Hot Coffee.)
- possibly attract boycotts (minor) or call for bans (possibly harmful if follow-through) due to the discovery of OJ in the game

Don't include OJ - 1 less 'classic pro star' for the marketing bulletpoint - but this shouldn't be a big deal, you can sign up a few more no-name players who used to play, nobody will bother to go through your roster and point out who qualifies and who doesn't
- don't get the chance to attract people who are still fans of OJ, or the controversy

By the way they chose, it seems that Take-Two is still trying to market via controversy, despite the new management (of course I doubt even the new management wants to eliminate all controversy - it is free PR, after all). I wonder if how high up the decision was made, and if important marketing execs were consulted.

Honestly, despite the benefits of controversy, I think it wasn't a wise decision on Take-Two's part, simply because it's been seen as pushing the edge too often in recent months. For example, if there wasn't Manhunt 2 to push, it'd probably be an okay idea, but allowing so many incidents to occur in short order gives more ammunition to Take-Two's opponents - especially those who don't care about videogames at all.

GAF i`m so disappointed - i cannot and won`t say why, but i`m disappointed at the lack of certain posts at this point in the threads life.

C'mon . . . why are you disappointed? I was hoping for some photoshops by now. :D

Or were you thinking cats?

Yeah, but would they say anything? That's not the kind of thing a game tester tests for. And even if you did think about it, you might assume that someone higher up already know.

I'm sure word would get around one way or another in the unlikely event the higher ups were somehow unaware. It really is that obvious.

<reporter> What about these allegations that you slashed the defense?

<OJ> That's ridiculous. I'm gonna find out who really did it, but first, you should all buy my book "If I Did It" it goes into detail what it would have been like if I had indeed slashed the defense.

OK . . . if you want to see how much Thestreet.com are hacks, check out this video. It is two solid minutes of OJ, knife, OJ, Assassin, black glove, killer, OJ, accounting problems, OJ, GTA "pornographic references", OJ, knife assassin, scantily clad women, murderers, Manhunt 2 banned, OJ, knife, etc.

BTW, I checked and OJ is not on the Assassins in the game, he is on the cyclones. A user has to created an assassins team and put OJ on it. Did that video mention that? No . . . they make it seem like it is the "OJ assassin football knife game"

WOW. That kind of reporting is totally responsible, an outrage.

I've always heard the expression, "opinions are like assholes--everybody's got one," but really, in this day and age, you shouldn't be able to go on TV and voice YOURS until you've done enough research to know what the hell you're talking about.

Disgusting.

you guys are crazy if you don't think Take2 did this on purpose. C'mon a team called the "Assassins" that has a knife as a logo and a giant guy swinging a knife around in the stadium? This was probably completely intentional.

Where's AltogetherAndrews now?

Don't know why I did this...not really relevant to the thread, but that picture was awfully inspiring.

Take-Two declined to answer specific questions relating to whether Simpson approved the use of the mascot in the game. But a company spokesperson forwarded a statement saying that the knifelike motion from the mascot is "not specifically associated with O.J. Simpson, and the game does not promote any such connection."

They're right. He's not associated with a downward stabbing motion, as seen near the end of the video. He's associated with a horizontal slashing motion.
