Valkyria Chronicles demo up!

Eh, it doesn't work for me.

I don't like the Japanese opening.

Is the only difference the music? Because that is the same video that I saw when I loaded it up. And I must say, I prefer the orchestral music.

Yeah the japenese song is not that great.

I don't need a demo. This is the primary reason why I brought my PS3. Come November, I expect to see this game in the November buys thread among the PS3 owning GAFFERS. Sega unlocked the talent from their cells, so don't let their efforts go for naught. It happened already in Japan...

I prefer having both as alternating OPs like ZoE2.

I'm looking forward to Valkyria, but damn there are just too many things getting released leaving a huge backlog.

Yeah, tell me about it, I wish this game was not coming out in a MONTH for the USA audience.

(Or 1 month and 1 day to be specific)

Actually I might get it by Nov 4. Amazon sent me an email stating the estimated arrival date is now Nov 4 (I was supposed to get the game Nov 12).

I have Japanese voices running in my review copy (which I made sure to grab asap after playing the demo), let me go check...

Sorry, no. I let it loop twice and no song intro, just the instrumental one.

I really really enjoyed it. I think this will be my first next gen rpg.
Like it was really really easy but I dont know if you can change the difficulty
but I loved the fact of how you move, shoot, move but its still turnbased.
I'm getting tired of all the action rpgs, (tales of vesperia, Infinite Undiscovery)
I think I'm gonna get it day 1, but hopefully they aren't like atlus and only make 2 copies.

I really like a lot more the japanese intro. I think that song is the original idea the creators planned for the game. I allways preffer the original stuff :lol

But the real problem is if they have eliminated the other songs in the game. There is an impressive moment in the plot... i just can't imagine it without the jap song. But i suppose that if you play with japanese voices that song will be the original.

Anyway, once you finish the game you unlock all the music. Probably you can enjoy all the original themes there.

Me at SRPG's = Fail.

I need to play this properly, the amount of instructions put me off.

I also haven't play an RPG since ages, turn based felt a bit wtf for me.

There are lots of instructions, but the game felt quite intuitive after playing it for a while.

Keep on playing it until the game is released and you master basic control and strategy that would make Valkyria a far more enjoyable experience.

Oh well, at least dual-audio is confirmed, thanks.

Oh! Just remembered, someone mentioned trophies earlier in the thread, any truth to that?

Have the game button configuration? Like change the left stick and aim with the right stick?

The japanese game doesn't has trophies. It has something similar but it is just internal for the game, you can win decorations depending on how well you do in the missions.

How longs the learning curve?

Well how long was it for you?

Try using the sandbags for cover, always crouching behind them first before using R1 to aim and shoot. The only enemies that won't fire at you when in range are the lancers. Also, try moving your tank up a bit to provide both cover & coverfire whenever enemies try to rush your sandbags. Another trick to use is pairing up your scouts or riflemen (the ones with submachine guns) behind sandbags so they'll fire on moving enemies together.

Anyways, if you having trouble, go for the tank first and them work your way forward. You'll get the hang of it.

Neither the snipers.

An advice:

To obtain the best rank in each mission the only thing that matters is the number of turns it takes to you to accomplish the objective. It doesn't matter if you kill a lot of soldiers or not. The best rank = the best xp and money.

Ah that too. Also, use Square to switch between your weapon, grenade or health potion thingie. Don't forget that your engineer can replenish ammo within one turn, useful for sniper runs since they only have 3 shots per turn.

I'm intriqued by this game.
Actually looks one of those titles that might be better than the sum of its parts. The music, especially one of the tunes I've seen in one of the trailers sound aloooot like one from the soundtrack of FFXII.

The core gameplay during battles seems to me to actually to have a lot in common with the battlesystem in the older fallout-titles, just exchange the hexagon-grid-movement-system with direct-movement. I've only seen gameplay-clips of the game so far and I've no ps3.
So, can anyone who've tried the demo confirm my hopes? :)

Maybe, but many of the parts (art, presentation, gameplay, controls, UI, music) are already amazing by themselves.

Not really, no. The only similarity is the AP system. However, in this game you control a rather large number of different units, and the return fire system (that is, the fact that all units shoot at active enemies that enter their range) opens up a lot of tactical options. It's really a very unique blend of TBS, RTS and RPG. I've played far too many games in all those genres and not encountered anything like it before.

So -- wait. North America has to PAY to get this demo?

How do I sign up for a European account?

Create a new user, log in, account management > new master account, select UK, input fake info. It's pretty straightforward from there.

...the same way you made your NA aacount or whatever. Instead just put in a fake UK address (10 Downing Street etc..)

Ok... I need to stop playing this game and actually start the one I just paid $60 for. Holy crap, best demo ever :lol

edit: Seriously though, why the hell isn't this on the PS3 US store for download? It's a demo, how hard is this? Put it up!
It will probably go up closer to release, like all the qore only demos. It's stupid that they chose this game when the demo is free elsewhere. But as long as they put it up before release in NA, adding it to qore might get some more exposure. Don't know how popular qore is really. :lol

Fantastic demo, I'm really excited for the game now. Worth spending 5 minutes making a Euro account to download it (Qore didn't interest me this month), and I hope SEGA has this up for everyone at least a week or 2 before release, this game deserves every chance to do well.

It was a pretty cool demo, though I wasn't as sold on it as some people here seem to be (it most likely just isn't my kind of game). I'll let the demo stay on my HDD for a little while, and perhaps return to it to see if it's worth a purchase or not. :)

Why do games use the left stick for targeting :(
Yeah, I always used right stick first instinctively. There's control settings but I never bothered looking, hopefully you can change that though I rather doubt it.

hmmm.....I'm leaning towards a scout-sniper-shocktrooper-tank combination even more.

You can't change it in the demo, maybe in the full game. At least it offers invert though. Thank god for that

Thing about the Japanese opening is, it's part of the theme of the game, vs this orchestral nonsense. A big part of it really.

Everything's paused when you aim anyway, so even if you forget it won't matter, just a second to realize.

Also! It seems the little artbook that came with the Valkyria LE in japan is going to be available as a preorder bonus in America. Gamestop and Gamecrazy it seems.

It's no deal breaker, it's just fustraiting is all. From memory Dead Rising had the same problem, and I think RE4 did too (though I didn't play that so I'm not sure)

It's not nearly as bad as it would be in those games, but give us options :(

Japanese devs needs a Ryan Payton

I suck at strategy games as well, but this felt quite natural and fairly easy to grasp. I'm glad they released this demo, I might have passed on the game otherwise.

Fizzle said:

To me, I got used to the game after the tutorial ended. I got more insight when reading more about the soldiers. I don't know, it felt natural to me. But I have played strategy RPG games before. This one is much easier to get used to, like Fire Emblem but realtime :D

Honestly, once you upgrade your scouts and gain some other key event equipment, the game gets extremely easy :lol

Yeah, but getting there isn't! The battle with
Gerbil
was LONG and EPIC!

Once you get far enough in the game though, theres a skirmish you can do over and over for easy XP, which means you can upgrade everyone easily thus making the game much easier.

That's good to hear, I know I'm going to suck at this game!

Are there difficulties to choose from in the full game?

Not for story mode, but I think Skirmish mode has various difficulties to choose from.

The main story's difficulty feels just right and they all have clever ways of being S-ranked (being completed in 1-3 turns).

I haven't played it in a long time but I still hold it as my favourite SRPG since Shining Force 3, which just like it requires zero grinding (although you can grind if you want) to progress through the game.

I got fed up of playing the grid-based strategy RPGs where they make you grind so much (Disgaea, FFT) so playing Valkyria was such a breath of fresh air. I love it.

You guys will definitely enjoy it too.

Well japanes games use to be more easy than the Usa and Eur ones... I hope this one will also be "fixed" for other countries, and won't have the XMB in-game problem.
