Valkyria Chronicles - November 11th

Never played one of these games before, but I just checked out a vid. I thought it was a turnbased RPG not a SRPG..but it looked decent. I will wait for reviews.

God I love that theme.

I just got this horrible feeling that Valkyria Chronicles will be the last game we ever get from Sega that has the feel of their classics. :(

might be reading into things, but it seems like a few things in VC are alluding to an Eternal Arcadia 2...won't say much beyond that until after the release since there's a minor spoiler involved.

Well, that would be completely awesome, but I'm not going to get my hopes up.

SoA2 with this engine would be great...

This game is sounding so cool. The hype here is putting this higher and higher on my "must try this" list.

Hello, old friends.

I'll prolly buy VC and hang onto it until the PS3 gets down to an affordable price. I doubt it'll stick around for a while on store shelves.

I was totally fixated on Selvaria, I totally forgot that this game was fanservice galore for the Skies of Arcadia fans.

We don't have a release date in Europe, but I'll probably get it once it's released.

A) The game screams high quality. It's giving lots of attention.
B) The music is made by the same composer behind FFXII/Vagrant Story etc. I love his music.
C) The team which is full of ladies need all the support they can get. I hope it can be enough of a success for them to work on a sequel and a SOA sequel.
D) The game is one of those special games. The ones you notice with a blink of an eye (do I make sense?).

Scrap that probably part. I'll get it 100% :D

Really? I had no idea that Overworks is working on this project.

I was under the assumption that a portion was developed by the Sakura Taisen team, but I had no idea that Overworks is involved.

I'm counting the days until it comes out :-(

Why do that, the game is coming out in around 3 1/2 months.

It would be better to start counting down when the game is a month away.

This thread is really hyping me even more for this game. Please stop, it's way too early to be excited. :(

I have a Selvaria avatar, if you think that it is too early to be excited, then what is wrong with me?

:lol

It was a rhetorical phrase :P but every time i see a Valkyria related thingie (avatar, thread whatever) i check the date and sigh... :-( i've been doing it since i learned the date for yurop.

Can't come soon enough.

If they ever do a Skies of Arcadia 2, they should do it in realistic proportions like this instead of the style of the original game.
I'm sure that, originally, this was going to be the case. But Overworks decided not to go through with it because of hardware limitations.

I mean, heck, even some of the orignial artwork had everyone looking completely realistic.

Thank god I don't post that often, or you will fall into a deep depression.

Well, I was happy they chose the cutesy anime style, but the anime style of Valkyria is way better than I expected, and it fits the Skies designs quite well.

I remember reading about Overworks being involved with it here in gaf. Though after I double checked it VC is made by WOW entertainment. Now I'm unsure if it's true. Sorry for the confusion :(

If you guys want to support the game, do what any hardcore fanatic would do. BUY MULTIPLE COPIES! :lol

If I wanted to support Valkyria where it was needed the most, and I wanted to buy multiple copies, I should have bought the import of the game. After all, the Japanese sales were absolutely pitiful.

The least I could do as a Valkyria fan is to buy
-The figures they have on Play-asia (Why no Selvaria?)
-A Valkyria Chronicles artbook (If they ever release one)
-Buy the complete guide for the game

Sadness, I was hoping that Overworks may have some involvement

No you wont, that is why you are in this thread for emotional support.

It is like Alocholics Anonymous, except better.

Well, to be frank, HD jrpgs in general have done rather poorly in Japan.

Speaking of that complete guide for the game that I posted.

What the hell is it? The complete guide moniker makes me think that it is a hybrid strategy guide and artbook like the Sakura Taisen ones.

Does anyone have it, because I am so tempted to buy it.

True, but Tales of Vesperia seems to do quite well, especially in comparison to Senjo No Valkyria.

It's a good change. I didn't want to say anything, but I always found it weird that you had chosen an interactive-fiction avatar to go along with your username.

Well you gotta consider that despite being on a worse selling system, the Tales of rpgs are a relatively well known franchise. Considering that Namco only expected 120K copies of Vesperia sold in Japan, wouldn't you say that it's pretty much similar to Valkyria (which was a brand new IP) which managed to sell at around 125K units? I mean I suspect that dev costs wise they would have been similar too.

This game was one of the if not the best selling new IP rpg in Japan this generation. There might be something on DS that did better but I can't think of anything right now. And not even being a more mainstream sub-genre really shows how well it did. It probably won't break even but that's probably because of engine costs. If they plan to make more games, it shouldn't cost as much.

edit: Forgot about Blue Dragon, thought it was a show before the game but it came after.

BD also had the advantage of the people behind it as well as the artist. When you have the"father of FF", Uematsu and the artist of DQ and DBZ on a project, it's certainly gonna turn more than a few heads.

And you forgot Etrian Odyssey (both) on DS.

So, what is everyone's opinions on shelf life for this game? Is this going to be an Atlus game situation, or will I be able to find this guy down the road in the bargain bin?

I may buy it now if I'm going to have to pay a premium down the line when I re-buy my PS3.

This is real? I thought this was a photoshop. Wow! The "three turns and dead forever" rule reminds me a lot of Final Fantasy Tactics for PS1.

Yeah except its virtually impossible to lose a unit in VC. A turn ends when you've used up all your stars on the CP bar, so if you have 8 units on the field, you will have 8 stars to use for each turn, so 8 x 3 attempts to get one member to tag the fallen unit.

I never had one unit permanently die.

Which is why Valkyria Chronicles will be one of the greatest Strategy RPG's ever made.

I hate Permadeath, but VC handles it with such style and panache I can forgive them.

There are three possible scenario's I envision happening for Valkyria Chronicles.

Scenario 1 - It is a a moderate success and the initial print run is not sold out, which means that it should be available until March or maybe even April. This assumes that there is positive word of mouth among the owners, and that the print run is not great enough to cause a price collapse, which means people wont be prone to experiment since it will be $60. With this scenario, the game could also increase in price for ebay users if demand increases down the line.

Scenario 2 - It is a slow burner after the November release. Positive word of mouth means that it has slow, but steady sales. Some positive word of mouth means that it will sell steadily during January, February, and even March. This also means that there will likely be another print run. Another print run may mean that there will be a glut of games on the shelf and that there may be price drops down the line to remove inventory.

Scenario 3 (Nightmare Scenario) - The game has a small initial print run based off preorders, it sells terribly. The print run eventually runs low after a price collapse or two. Later down the line, positive word of mouth will increase demand, but the lack of available copies significantly increases the price of the game on second hand stores. While positive buzz creates positive perception, the damage is done and Sega kills the franchise.

I am definitely hoping more of a scenario 2, instead of scenario 1.

Edit: Note that none of my scenarios assume that the game will be a huge success, I don't expect it to be one.

There's not even anything to compare it to really...maybe Folklore, I suppose alhough it's a totally different type of game.

Given the release date, and how poor I'll be around then I may end up just keeping an eye on it for a month or two.

Actually, I think that Valkyria can be compared to one of my favorite games.

There is Phoenix Wright, which was released in the same time period and had some similarities in the DS market (ie: Niche Game, sandwiched between huge DS releases). What I remember was that the game was released in October 2005, right between huge DS games like Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Mario Kart DS, Trauma Center, and Nintendogs. It sold 12,000 copies between October and December, it was a HUGE failure in the United States. Positive word of mouth pushed sales, and the game had to go through 5 or 6 print runs and it eventually sold around 100,000 copies. As a niche game, word of mouth was the reason why we have 4 Ace Attorney games that sold 50k-60k a piece with an extremely loyal fanbase in the States.

Granted, I have a feeling that Valkyria will be like that, but with larger numbers. As in it would sell through 100,000 copies in November. It would be considered a bomb, but then word of mouth among PS3 owners will push sales to 300k or 400k after 3 or 4 print runs. Deep down, I have a feeling it will be a huge success for Sega, but it will require the November adapters to push the game to everyone else.
