Valve adds offline messaging, recent chat log [now live]

Another addition to the beta is that screenshots can now be saved in uncompressed PNG files in external folders. They can't be uploaded to the Steam servers yet though, but I expect that Valve will enable that option soonish.

Changelogs:

Client changes:
- fixed "Content still encrypted" error while downloading shared content

- Mac: notification popups now respond on the first click
- Mac: web page views no longer freeze up after clicking and dragging the mouse
- Mac: all invisible/pending chat windows are now revealed whenever the dock icon is clicked

Client changes:
Fixed a crash when taking screenshots in TF2 or CS:GO

Web chat changes:
Added sound when receiving a new message. Temporary UI to enable/disable sound in the top right of the browser window. Not available in Internet Explorer 8 or less.
Added desktop notifications for Chrome and Safari users (need to click the "Enable Desktop Notifications" link in the top right)
Added display of nicknames next to friends if you have them set

Offline messaging: You can now send messages to users who are offline. They will receive the message when they next log in.
Opening a chat dialog with a friend will show some recent chat history

Now if only there would be an option that would let you play games while connected to Steam without updating them, even if updates are available.

Some games have various beta updates you can opt into so surely it's possible for them to do an opt out system if they wanted.

If I remember correctly, a change in game updating is in the cards when the full steam catalog is ported to the new content system.

I don't use steam much but this is pretty cool. I guess with steam box coming they got to match features with PSN/XBL. Looks like everyone will end up winning.

Another update went out yesterday:

Changes for all platforms:

- Fixed an issue where incoming friend messages could get overwritten by the chat history appearing
- When a friend's status changes multiple times consecutively, only the last change will be shown (ie "Friend is now Online", "Friend is now Away" messages)
- Fixed losing files while converting HL or CS to new content system
- Fixed Windows error message “Disk not ready” in game install wizard
- Fixed updating shared content in same cases
- Requesting smaller guide preview images in overlay
- Caching guide preview images when viewed in the overlay
- Add Ctrl+A select-all for system info text.
- Fixed web chat not properly showing status as "Offline" when there are connectivity issues.
- Fixed an issue where links in web chat would sometimes include newlines and other text after the URL

Changes for Linux:

- Fixed crash after suspend/resume with XBox360 wireless controller attached
- Avoid repeated focus updates when showing a tooltip.
- Properly detect SSE 4.2.
- Fix Steam crashing after resume from sleep.
- Fixes chat window not becoming visible when clicking on notifications
- Fix overlay support for Towns.
- Fix “Run Steam when my computer starts” option when no autostarts existed.
- Fix non-Steam shortcut parsing for Crossover .desktop files.
- Updated license to allow repackaging for other Linux distributions
