Valve comments on console rumours - No Steambox any time soon

The controller and Big Picture Mode standards were the interesting things about the "box" anyways.

There's no way they were ever going to subsidize computers. Would it be cool for dudes who already buy boutique computers from Alienware? Sure. But it seems like some here were expecting an i7 and competitive GPU and Uncle Gabe was going to subsidize it at 499.99. Valve doesn't have billions of dollars to give-away. If it does exist, think Alienware branded and starting at at least 999.99.

We got it all wrong. It's not going to be a Steam console, it's a HL3 console. The only way you can play the epic 300 hour HL3 campaign.

Due in 2020.

Hmm. We could see Big Picture Mode released this year which would let us build our own Valve Box? Use us as guinea pigs. Then down the line Valve could sign hardware deals and market the whole box, software and hardware once software is ready and properly aged for widespread consumption.

What's "any time soon", exactly?

Well in the original report, Kotaku seemed to ask explicitly about GDC or E3 for example. Lombardi said they were 'a long way' from Valve shipping hardware. So sounds sort of like if they are thinking about anything, it's pretty far down the line.

Of course, they could be just trying to throw people off the scent a bit to regain some element of surprise for later...

valve may not be working on a console

but sony is...

and sony's ps4 is going to be "like a pc"

maybe steam will be on sony's box?

No. If Sony wanted an aggressive system like Steam's model, they could already have it with PSN. The things that make Steam cool run counter to the console business model.

Scumbag Gabe:

Fans ask for HL3 over and over.

Discusses some 'biometric feedback' hardware thingaling they're looking into.

That's the equivalent of Nintendo announcing that granny finger heart rate sensor instead of a new SM64/Starfox 64 sequel.

in 2005 they said TF2 would come out "soon".
it finally came out 2007..

wonder what not anytime soon would translate to?
