Valve Confirms Episode 2 Release Date

I was so planning on getting this but it's too close to Halo 3 and when that's done I'll probably get Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect. This will probably be something for during a drought. Bad time to release HL2 on the 360.

I think he means the actual shooting of the guns, which is pretty weak in HL2 and one of my only real complaints with it. Halo's shooting is better, but still not great. The guns just aren't fun to shoot, especially compared to games like Perfect Dark 64 and Urban Chaos: RR.
i can agree with this for guns like the smg, shotgun, and combine rifle. i think by the time they did DoD:S, they had learned how to do it better. not that they'll go back and change it in hl2 though.

so let me get this straight. consoles are getting portals and tf2, but not cs:s or dod:s? they'd probably really like dod:s.

gravity gun, fly by wire rocket launcher, secondary fire on the combine rifle, and crossbow are less interesting than halo weaponry..?

Yes. They are really boring to use in my opinion. The grav gun is the only really interesting gun in HL2.

That too. :)

Oh come on, the game's sniper rifle is a Crossbow that shoots smoldering hot REBAR.

It doesn't get more awesome then that.

It still lacks a real machine gun, the pistol and SMG are weaksauce. Combine SMG is bit better, but the shotgun is unmatched :D

You have to agree, though, that the HL2's AI is pretty inferior compared to Halo's. It seemed like run towards you, stop, and shoot.
i've played through halo 2 and half-life 2. i don't see where someone could think halo 2's AI is so much better. i think if the combine could run faster, people would suddenly start saying HL2's AI was awesome. they do run slow and i can see how that'd make them look dumb.

the combine can run and gun, avoid grenades, fall back to cover and all that. they communicate with eachother and stick in squads. not bad at all.

you have bad taste. :lol

especially compared to halo. you got the needler, sticky grenade.... and?

I believe the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions are going to have HDR implemented throughout, whereas the PC version did not.

This is correct. HDR lighting will now be utilized in vanilla HL2 on 360/PS3. PC users will get access to this updated version as well, but because all of the maps need to be remade to take advantage of the lighting, they will need to download most of the game content again.

Expect a new game entry in the Steam browser; something like "Half-Life 2: HDR Edition"

Half-Life 2: Episode 1 was one of the most thrilling rollercoasters of a game I've ever played. It's incredible. Episode 2 looks like it's gonna be even more insane. HL2 is the shit, and TF2 should rock. Portal is like icing on the cake.

This will be the best 60 dollars you spend this Fall. :)

I can't wait... I'll be getting the PS3 and PC versions.

I agree. Honestly I liked the Original Half Life 2, but found it overall to be too long winded... but Half Life 2 Episode 1 is freaking insane. One of my favorite games ever and all the things like Portal... TF2... it boggles my mind the value we're going to be getting come October.

THIS is the release I'm marking down on my calendar more so then any other upcoming title.

I swear if this gets delayed again I'm going to be ****ing pissed.

I don't particularly care for anything in any of the Technicolor packs, I just want the new Source tech to be out so that Left 4 Dead can ****ing come out. Knowing Valve, even if L4D was finished and ready to go they would hold it until Episode 2 gets released.

I'm counting on this getting delayed to '08. It would be a nice surprise if it came out on time, but Halo 3 is just too omnipresent at the moment, and it's not even on PC.

Which reminds me, what the HELL were they thinking releasing Tron against Halo 2?

what new source tech is left 4 dead using...? it doesn't seem to be using the stylistic rendering of tf2.

edit: for the last time, HL2 doesn't need to move their date anywhere because of halo! it's a non-issue! HL2 was released during the same quarter as halo 2 and GTA:SA. GAF has blown that whole concept way out of proportion.

Valve sending Episode 2 out to die because of Halo 3, right guys?
Yes, I will definetily get the Halo 3 PC version in October and NOT get HL2 Episode 2

I will get the PS3 version of Halo 3 too instead of Killzone 2 or any other great PS3 games that might be released.

I will get the 360 version of Halo 3 too, just to have them all. It is a little sad I cant buy any other great games this holiday season because I spend so much money on Halo 3, but I dont really care.

Source 2.0 is getting a new and enhanced particle effects system as well as an improved physics engine (iirc) and a much enhanced lighting engine. Also the one that isn't used in L4D (since its a MP game) is the new streaming tech to get rid of the loading screens between levels (this better be retro fitted into HL2 Valve or heads will ****ing roll.)

So yeah, I need to buy Left 4 Dead, like, 3 months ago.

Riiiiiiiiiight. When Valve add interesting gunplay to their game we'll talk.

Can't wait to buy it even if I already own HL2 and Episode 1. :D

Halo Fanboys are the ones to talk. Call me when you actually can aim in a console shooter and not only have to slowly scroll your "crosshair" in the general direction of the next enemy, wait till autoaim locks in and than because of the 2 inch diameter of the "crosshair" hit your hitboxless Lego creature randomly all over his glowing body, depleting your whole magazine of whatever unimaginative weapon you're using.

Halo is not a shooter.

nice! I'm totally getting this, I never got to experience Half-Life 2 like it's supposed to be experienced. (I played through it on the Xbox) I remember watching/reading all the impressions for Episode 1 and wanting to play it badly; plus Episode 2 and Team Fortress 2 looks to be insanely good. all this for $60 is a no brainer, Orange box FTW!

$50 bucks is a steal for all those games. I already played Half life 2 and some of episode 1 at my buddies place...but now I have a good reason to own the set.

Whatever I played of HL2 on the xbox, I enjoyed the atmoshpere far more than the combat and gunplay. Just being in the game was awesome, it was a very refined experience so I quit and waited for the 360 version.

I didn't like Episode 1 and enjoyed Half life 2. I felt they put too much emphasis on the super gravity gun...and am one of the few that didn't really enjoy that gun.

Does anyone know if the 360 version will support KB/M? Because I'll buy that one if it does.
Probably not. But Valve is handling the 360 version so it should be good either way.

My computer is getting a bit behind the curve and I'm worried about it's ability to play Ep2. Plus all the new HDR goodness in the 360 version. But I don't like to play games intended for KB/M on a controller. Not saying it's better, just saying there's a different feel to it (like Halo on the PC, which I felt controlled kind of oddly).

ARGH, why is valve making me wait so long before i get to run around as a mad russian with a minigun gunning down my enemies. Damnit, i can't wait for team fortress 2.

I smell thousands of Halo converts once they play a real FPS.
Halo fans like multiplayer, and Halo multiplayer takes a nice, steamy dump on HL2 Deathmatch.

TF2 might prove more interesting, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

agreed, I loved the rich atmosphere that was in Half-Life 2. with that said though, the H&K MP-7 PDW is one of my favorite guns ever.

Valve Confirms Team Fortress 2 Release Date.

I've been waiting for this game ever since It was announced in 98/99.:lol

will the console gamers even get HL2DM...? and when PC users originally bought HL2, they got HL2DM, CS:S, and if they spent $10 more ($59.99 total), they also got DoD:S and later HLDM:S. so bringing up HL2DM as if it's the only HL2 MP is pretty misleading. HL2 on PC was basically the best $60 you could ever spend on a game.

Didn't DoD:S come with episode 1?
episode 1 came out like 7 months after DoD:S. i got DoD:S with HL2 silver package. $59.99 off steam.

edit: i also pre-ordered off steam, so i got to download CS:S early. i really hope they do the same with TF2.

Anyway, looking forward to both Team Fortress 2 and Episode 2 a lot. I guess Portal looks fun too.

What really clicked with me was some of the sections when you're all alone and/or solving puzzles (especially with the gravity gun).
This game pushed my intellectual muscles a little more than most other games, without being overly difficult and frustrating (which is what made it feel so refined). I didn't feel looked down on, but respected (as weird as that may sound). It actually felt like you're in this action movie thriller or whatever and you're improvising on the spot.
Can't wait to finish that game and get to EP1 and 2.

EP1 is even better than HL2 in that regard. ;)

I enjoyed Halo on Xbox and HL2 on PC equally (as do many Gaffers), what does that make me?

You're just bitter.

All I care about is TF2 on 360. My most anticipated holiday game on the 360 over my other top choices AC6, Halo3, and Assassins Creed.

episode 1 is the shit. half life 2 is great, but episode 1 is awesome while it lasts. hopefully episode 2 will be just as good.

i can't make my mind up on which version i want to get... pc or 360. all my friends have 360s so it'd be the best bet for playing TF2 multiplayer, and it'd be nice to have them all together in the one package, but i don't know. the pc will be cheaper and episode 2, portal and tf2 will be better looking and played on the preferrable mouse and keys (though played with unpreferrable strangers).

hard decision.

easy. make better friends :lol

I am really curious to see how this turns out on consoles. I own it for PC and would love to play on my big-screen HDTV and surround sound. I wonder if the PS3 version will have assets loaded on to the hard drive for faster loading.

Why would HL2 DM even be an issue if TF2 comes in the same box? Who cares? It's practically irrelevant.

Because TF2 is an update of a 6 year old game that no one outside the press has played, so its an unknown variable. HLDM, shitty as it is, at least you can compare it to other games.

HL2 didn't come with death match, that was released later. It came with CS: Source. When you buy HL2 now, I have no clue what other games come with it, though I'd assume HL2DM is part of the package.

The gaming schedule for the rest of this year is packed - mind you I say this every year and half of the games end up getting delayed. But seeing solid dates on these top titles along with how far they are in development (Halo 3, Bioshock, Mass Effect, etc.) means this year is the real deal.

I think I'll have to finally upgrade my '04 PC for Ep2/TF2, I've always played Half-Life on the PC and localised multiplayer support along with dedicated servers make it a better option for me than on the PS3/360.

On that subject, has there been much detail about how online TF2 will be supported on the consoles with regards to Steam/updates/dedicated servers?

"yeah, because finding friends to play online with via steam is *so* easy, as is convincing all my friends to go out and spend $1000+ on a PC. real easy."

Making half-life 2 look good hasn't required a 1000$ machine since 2004.

PS3 or 360 version for me, I'm going to wait and see how it turns out on PS3 but I don't have much faith in a port outsourced to EA...

It might not be as bad as some may be expecting..Develop has a little more detail:

http://www.developmag.com/news/27603/Valve-confirms-EA-UK-has-dev-duties-an-PS3-HL2

Shacknews has confirmed a widely-known industry 'secret' - that Valve has entrusted development of the PS3 version of Half-Life to EA UK.

Production of the Sony version of the game, which includes the original title and its follow-up spin-off episodes, began with a team at EA's Chertsey development base who then moved to Guildford when all the EA UK development was brought under one roof.

...

Choosing EA UK for the PS3 work seems to be a smart choice - its new Guildford base is built around the old Criterion talent-base, which has always lead its productions on Sony formats.

We'll see though.
