Valve's Portal trailer (true innovation is here)

Spider-Man the Animated Series did it first:

Turning Point is such an awesome episode. Screw the haters -- the show is every bit as good as X-Men (and X-Men is great).

i dont think they worked on it for 10 years, they prolly worked on it for maybe 2-3 years maximum but the other years it was jus sitting on the shelf for later

I bet if this trailer came out a month before PREY's launch date,
there would be a mysterious delay.

wait for the addon pack man, it's be like Doom3's expansion pack gravity gun.

i think this is one thread where almost everyone regardless of position agrees!

Valve is awesome! Portal is awesome! Valve should make a console, I'd buy true innovation!

Valve is so amazing, aren't they? Its good to see VALVE finally getting the kind of attention and credit for making such great games like these. GO VALVE!
:lol

Just when I think another developer is my favorite, Valve reels me back in- everytime. I know it's just one franchise, but they've done an incredible job keeping it fresh and innovative. Even if it's from 'teh FPS hell'. ;P

Meh...

j/k that was amazing. The vid had motion blur, and I hope the game has it too, it looks great with it.

I love puzzlers, I love FPS games...this is going to be one delectable combo!

every time I watch it I scratch my head as to why the HELL the designers of Prey didn't think of this. It's so incredibly obvious given they already were using portal tech. How did they just not see the possibility of this?
There might be a reason why Valve does not release this as a full game. It is innovative and looks fun, but the game design might get quite unconcontrollable because you can do about everything.

So it might be fun just to play around with the tech but hard to build a full working and fun campaign on the idea.

It works fine in Nabacular Drop.

I'm not saying some sort of error would occur but being able to shoot portals through portals would definitely be mind-boggling.

One of the coolest things about the video, that had my jaw on the floor until the end, was how he shot a portal on the wall and then shot one under the box, and using the sexy Source physics the box flies out of the wall and topples the gun. I was just like "OMGBBQ".

"So it might be fun just to play around with the tech but hard to build a full working and fun campaign on the idea."

It *is* a full game. It's a puzzle game.

Why do you never just quote people the forum way? I mean, it's easier than copypasta if you hit the link.

Because I only copy/paste specific stuff that I'm responding to, it actually takes more effort to use the quote link and cutting all the rest of the crap out than just highlighting then copy/pasting and throwing some quotation marks on it.

I have to see what happens when you shoot a portal through a portal.

In Narbacular Drop's last level there is a really easy way to beat it. You basically have to climb up like 15 ledges that all block your view. Instead of climbing each separate ledge, you just place on portal next to you, and another high up on the wall. Then use the portal next to you as a kinda TV deal and just shoot portals through it. It's really hard to explain, but basically you can move around using the second portal. As if you were placing cameras everywhere. You really just have to try it, but it's awesome.

I keep showing this trailer to more casual of folks, ie: the kinds who don't really care much for video games.

Everyone agrees. Watching Portal in action may cause your brain to shift a few degrees inside your skull. And now my girlfriend wants a 360 for this (Though she actually does play games).

Anticipation +10

Smack your girlfriend across the face and tell her FPS don't belong on consoles.

but prey isnt

"but prey isnt"

What's your point, again?
My point, again, is that Prey doesnt feature stuff like this because probably this stuff wont work for an FPS game design (making it either not fun or just completely uncontrollable).

Valve themselves dont seem to trust it enough to make this a FULL PRICE game.

Mapdesign for Portals is VERY different to mapdesign for Prey. In Portals, you'll be puzzling, in Prey, you're shooting and with funny-portal-stuff.

So basically, Portals ain't a FPS, but a FPP :P First Person Puzzler.

I see this as a glorified grappling hook (see quake), in that it will tend to "break" the level design and there will be people who will get it and others who won't. I'm all for it! Bring back the glorious grappling hook! :D

That is so cool! I want to try the original out, but, the bandwidth limit has been exceeded. v.v;; Damn you gaf...

Them random digipen students deserve all the credit they get...... Even if it seems to be targeted at Valve... *shrug*

Yeah, I died once or twice in ND's last level doing it the regular way, and after that I just did it the lazy way - keep one portal on the ground floor and continously shoot the other portal through it upwards until I got to the top. You still can die if you accidentally
place the other portal in the path of a boulder.
But that's minor.

After watching the Valve trailer I went back to try that "falling through one floor portal can give you upwards momentum out of another portal on the floor" trick and it works in ND too. Awesome.

When's the last time you saw a puzzle game that had a 50$ MSRP (in America)?

I strangely get the feeling of Trackmania Sunrise for this game. Having some nice graphics along with using a single object [in TMs case, the car], to solve a 'puzzle' set.

Or am I just crazy? :lol
