Vancouver GAF -- Is Surrey Really That Bad (Guildford especially)?

Don't want to start a new thread, so I'll ask in here. What are people's opinions on the Mount Pleasant and Fairview areas? Been looking around those parts as SO will be working very near.

Like the look of both areas, Mount Pleasant especially.

With regards to Mount Pleasant, it's just as fine as any area in the Vancouver area to live in. When I used to work for Atomic Cartoons, I go to Main Street & Kingsway to get my haircut and have some lunch at Budgie's Burrito's. It's nothing special to the average person, but it's one of my favourite areas to go to when I'm jogging.

Sounds good. We're just looking for a place that nice and fairly quiet with some good eateries and bars. They seem to have been building a lot of new condos round there that sort of suit what we'd be looking for. And of course easy access to the skytrain, etc

We were also looking at Yaletown, but I'm not sure how busy that area is. Apparently fairly busy? We've set a $3000 monthly budget for rent. That should be OK for Mount Pleasant?

Surrey is pretty much Vancouver's Scarborough. Its virtually identical. It gets a bad rap, and you probably don't want to live in most of it (mostly because the buildings suck), but there are nice parts.
That's funny because I used to live in Scarborough as a baby. The way my parents described it, it is the most ghetto place that a person could live. We had some gangstas constantly harassing us and throwing literal shit at our door. My dad got into a knife fight with someone (don't remember why) and our apartment was full of rats and cockroaches. Surrey isn't the best place but Scarborough is just a human dump.

I second that re Scarborough. It really took a dive in the 90s.

I don't like the bad rap Surrey gets and I think it would be a nice place to live but every time I drive though its neighborhoods I want to scream. I am not a timid driver but I've noticed that cars are driven like weapons, excessive speeding is very common and I think it's nuts, plus it thins my hair. The best I can do is pull out my phone and hope the GPS takes me to my destination while I work on getting there in once piece.

people get shot and stabbed like every other day here. I love it. I go "hey, I live near that dude who just got shot"

$3000 is tons for Mount Pleasant. You should be good even in the nicest, newest place.

I've lived in Mount Pleasant for several years. It's a very nice neighbourhood, with good independent shopping and good transit connections. At the moment the food scene is in a bit of a lull from its peak a few years ago, but it's still good. The most vibrant place for new restaurants is Thornton Park and Chinatown, which is only about a 20 minute walk from the North part of Mount Pleasant, so you can imagine that it's a very short bus or bike ride.

Yaletown has good transit and is downtown, which is quite convenient. Yaletown is Downtown so it's probably busier than Mount Pleasant, but it's not in the heart of Downtown so it's not crazy busy. It has a very different feel from Mount Pleasant so depending on your interests it might be more or less interesting than Mount Pleasant. Mount Pleasant is sort of for 30 year old hipsters, and has lots of independent retail, vegetarian restaurants and craft breweries. Yaletown is for more professional 30 year olds, and the restaurants are mostly "upscale casual" chains such as Cactus Club, Earls, The Keg, etc. Obviously I'm painting with a broad brush here and there are exceptions in each neighbourhood. For example Yaletown has a fantastic indie coffeeshop/bakery, and Mount Pleasant has a Tim Hortons in the centre of it.

The Olympic Village is just North of Mount Pleasant, hugging the South East corner of False Creek. It is pretty much like a quieter Yaletown. It's further out and closer to Mount Pleasant/Thornton Park/Chinatown. That also could be a good option depending on your interests.

EDIT: Regarding Fairview it's an older crowd, but I've been in some of the apartments along the False Creek and they are very nice. I have some friends who live down there. There's some co-ops down there but regular apartments as well. Granville Island is a nice area. It's a big tourist draw, but is really useful for locals too.

I've worked in both Scarborough and Surrey as an adult. Scarborough isn't that bad, its just poor. I spend a lot of time with my job going into peoples homes, and have seen my fair share of roaches and rats. That's usually the sign of a poor building than a problem with the city. Surrey actually has a bigger violent crime problem (murder rate is more than 2x Scarborough's), but that's more of a West Coast problem than a Surrey specific problem. Honestly, with cities this big, you could move from a bad part of Surrey to a nicer part of Scarborough and have the same experience.

This thread is confusing since there is a city called Guildford in a county called Surrey in England.

Especially since Surrey is a really posh county.

yea I'm confused as well, Guildford has its shitty areas but what towns don't (its not actually a city, they keep applying to be one but never gets it) apart from the fact rental and house prices in Surrey are high its a nice place to live.

Thank you for this. Good to get some insight from someone who lives there.
