Vehicles in Half-Life 2 Suck Ass

The problem is, you are not playing it on the PC. The vehicle handling was designed on the PC and you can tell. I think they work great. Better than Halo 1 PC (not tired 2).

I can imagine they would be shit with a gamepad though..... urgh.

I didn't think Half-Life 2's vehicle section was that bad (I haven't played episode 2 yet).

It wasn't as fun as a Halo vehicle or something like that, but I thought it was a nice change of pace. It wasn't something I'd want to do for the whole game, but it wasn't awful, and it certainly had some fun moments.

Never had a problem with the controls on the PC. In fact the boat section is one of my favorites from HL2. I can see them being annoying on the console, though.

lol Halo vehicle controls. I guess they're passable for the retard form of FPS controls, but Operation Flashpoint absolutely destroys Halo for vehicles and vehicle controls. I don't really get the hate for HL2's vehicles either, but then again I played HL2 as god intended on the PC. They aren't perfect or anything, but they're way better with mouse and keyboard than they are on a gamepad.

So, if you're not playing on the PC, then you're a retard? Good show! I wish I could be 1337. :(

Operation Flashpoint vehicle handling is antiquated. I get a feeling you're looking through rose-tinted specs.

(if you still play it lemme know :p)

HL2's vehicles wouldn't be so hated by me, if I didn't spend so much time with them. Tedious, annoying and made me a bit dizzy as well.

Episode 2 was just perfect, though.

I hate how the steering reverses when you drive the boat thing backwards (unlike real-life car steering). It doesn't even half-properly depend on whether or not you go backwards, but depending on you pressing forward or backward (you can still have momentum going in the opposite direction). It's completely retarded. The responsible parties need to be strangled.

On the whole, HL2 feels padded. It's the most annoying in the vehicle parts, because as the OP states so aptly, they all suck, but if you look at any single section of the game, you could always cut about half of it away. The Episode followups have much better pacing, and it gave me the distinct feeling that Half Life 2 proper would have been a better game if it had the same "episodic" length, but they inflated it because otherwise it would have seemed too short for a full retail game.

for FPS, yes. This is indisputable gospel. get used to it.

I'm glad I subscribe to a different religion then you do. If it's fun, I play it. You are a adherent of Gaming Taliban, forever bent over to recite the same prayer ad infinitun, never at peace or rest. And I have achieved Enlightenment, basking in the charmed glow of gaming Nirvana, my midsection swollen with the infinite cornucopia of gaming goodness that nourishes my soul.

I will pray for you. Blessed be the wretched.

Yeah, that part is boring, but you should give the game another try as the latter part of the game (chapter 9 and after that) is one crazy ride that you shouldn't miss.

BTW I think it's time for Valve to improve in the animations department a bit and add full body awareness. It sucks to see a steering wheel that is turning all by itself in 2008.:/

I much, much prefer them to Halo myself. They feel like they have weight and like they're connecting with the ground. Halo's vehicles all feel like they're made from jelly sliding around on a world made of butter to me.

They're workable once you get used to them. I found myself over steering a lot to begin with, but if you can adapt yourself to the controls, things get easier.

What they should have done was made the vehicles sections Third Person instead of first person.
that's no HL

You can't have taste and praise the halo saga. Stephen Hawking said so after years of research, so it's scientifical.

Welcome to 4 years ago..

But yes, they suck ass, and they are the big reason why I still haven't finished the game.

Just when I start to enjoy it again I am thrown in a vehicle that handles like shit and have to drive across the most boring piece of shitty level design ever made. *sigh*

Drive, drive, drive. Get out and shoot. Find vehicle again. Drive, drive, drive. Get out and shoot. Find vehicle again.

It's such a shame it's otherwise an amazing game, but every section with vehicles is shit.

The handling is wretched, and you are as likely to get stuck on some tree or some shit as anything else. (Our Mutual Fiend, Episode 2)

If I could completely skip the vehicle sections I would, the controls are just too shitty.

I thought the buggy in Water Hazard was bad, but the car in Episode 2 is a hell of a lot worse :(

I agree. It almost ruined the experience for me, hadn't it been for the fact that the rest is pretty damn amazing.

Yes the vehicles in Half-Life 2 are not great but it has nothing to do with controls. The acceleration, turning radius, and braking are the problem. Keyboard and Mouse isn't going to change the physics of that.

For all you PC whiners, Halo and COD just sold a combined 10 million+ to console gamers and they seem to have no problem with gamepad controls so perhaps you should try to suck a little less at games and man up a bit.

sure... it's more like:
Drive, visit a desert village, fight, drive drive, clear the road, drive, open the gate restoring the power, drive...
At leat it tries to be original.
in halo is like:
drive drive drive *bloody theme playing over and over again* drive drive drive *shit coming at you* drive drive *cheesy dialogue* drive drive drive *nonsense radio comunication* drive drive drive *da da da daaaaan*

What do game sales have to do with this thread?

So which is better, Halo or Half Life?

Also, would you say gaming on the PC is superior to a console, or vice versa?

Please answer in a timely fashion because I need a response ASAP!

No, Urk is pretty much exactly right. And perhaps Halo driving is the same, but Halo driving is FUN. Spinning the warthog around is FUN. Having your dumbfuck AI partners blowing up enemy vehicles is FUN.

Driving the janky ass go-kart through tunnel after tunnel after tunnel is NOT FUN.

No one is asking this question.

Somone pointed out that HL2s vehicles suck, and then somone brought up Halo, saying HL2s vehicles are better than Halos. Which, we all know, is rubbish.

Then carnage ensued.

Do not be fooled by the light at the end of the tunnel. It's a load.

This must be for the console version. The controls on PC are easy as pie to get used to. Especially with the fact that it's almost imposssible to flip the hover boat over and stuff like that. If you can't play those sections then god, they might as well make it on-rails.

Gonna post this again. I've played both console and PC versions. They're both pretty poor experiences, especially when compared to the rest of the game.

All this console versus PC version of HL2 talk is not doing Gordon's Go-Kart any favors. If anything, it's extra embarrassing that Halo vehicles, controlled with a toy like a gamepad, just OBLITERATE Half Life 2's vehicles controlled by a next-gen input device like the keyboard/mouse.

What I would love to see is a version of the vehicle sections where you use a racing wheel/pedals to control the car, and a Wiimote to shoot. Combined with the PC version's graphics, that would probably be the greatest thing of all time.

Joke character?

It's kind of confusing as to why people had problems with the HL2 controls. The vehicle sections are almost entirely linear so all you really had to do was go forward, boost, break and nudge the direction left or right a little to choose your paths.

This wasn't a go-kart racer nor were you free-roaming.

I didn't think the vehicle controls were bad at all.

I even kind of had fun with the "Send the Garden Gnome into Space" achievement, which involves balancing an object on top of the vehicle throughout most of Episode 2.

First post is a joke, second is sincere.

Wouldn't that be fun to play? One hand on the wheel, one shooting, feet accelerating, blasting combine & antlions. Come on...

Its true, the vehicles are the least fun thing about HL2 and Episode 2 because the controls are so terrible.

Just curious, whats better about the vehicle controls on pc than console? I thought on pc you just use the keyboard (wsad or whatever) for steering and acceleration? How is that better than a stick? Or is it just that you can look around with the mouse that makes it better?

The problem is the user. I watch my friends play HL2 and its so painful, then they say the game isnt that great and it just KILLS ME. If you played HL2 like i do .. but i cant expect kids to log in my hours in FPS.. but just dont say "VEhicles in HL2 sucks ass" you fucking retard =[
