Ventura Beat: Nintendo Switch graphics are based on Nvidia's Maxwell Architecture

So a $300 system to play Zelda and Wii U ports? Yes I'm buying it but I'm tired of supporting Nintendo's stance on outdated technology. Haven't they learned their lesson?

Learned their lesson in which way? Not offering hardware with graphical fidelity comparable to their competitors? If so, good luck with an even more expensive, big, power consuming and hot console, that should be portable.

As Thraktor posted, in this case it seems to make little difference in graphical capabilities if they went with Pascal or not.

And do keep in mind, that, whatever it is, is custom. So stating that Maxwell is bad per se in this case is a bit premature. Custom chip based on whatever can mean anything. Of course, it won't be bleeding edge but it sounds like well designed and balanced hardware.

3x Wii U sounds about right. The RAM count is rumored to be 3x as much and it's a more modern/efficient system. I imagine that's enough to run 720p Wii U games like Zelda or 3D world at 1080p when docked?

That's what I expect. Wii U-like visuals but at 1080p with AA and AF.

I wonder if it can run something like Assassin's Creed Syndicate or Witcher 3 at 720p?

Outdated how, exactly?

With scaled down graphics, sure.

Can't realate at all with those who are disappointed by NS supposed performance, i am still blown away by the fact that we'll have a portable console more powerful than a WiiU.
I mean, we will play games like Zelda Botw and even better looking one on the go! Incredible.

Yeah, an interesting thing to think about. I imagine it can run PS4/Xbox One games that are 1080p at a lower resolution, but what about 900p games? Especially on the handheld
But yes, I imagine a lot of those games can run on Switch scaled down a bit.

Only Cartoon-styled HDR

https://developer.nvidia.com/getting-know-new-hdr

Since you’re sold on how great displaying your content in HDR is, here is the quick list of what you need to get things working:

NVIDIA GPU from the Maxwell or Pascal families (GTX 960, GTX 980, GTX 1070, GTX 1080, etc)
HDR display supporting SMPTE 2084 often labeled as HDR10 (most likely a new UHD TV, but you can expect future support from monitors as well)
Windows 7 or later

It's not about the architecture.

Outdated how, exactly?

With scaled down graphics, sure.
How scaled down? Like just turning the resolution down to 720p and dropping shadow quality or are we talking significant scaling down like texture resolutions and draw distances?

I think confirmation is needed, but regarding the spec and cost ratio with the Maxwell chips against the Pascal chips, the current 'new' 3DS's here in the UK (I am looking at getting one as my original 3DS is on it's way out) are around £180, I cannot see the Switch being "only" £70 more at £250 that is unless the price of the 'new' 3DS's are halved overnight.

I admit that I have been pretty negative here on GAF about the Switch, but I am trying to get to a fair outlook, I'm not buying a Switch at launch I am going to wait and see how it pans out after it is released, I do think that Nintendo has made a mistake in not coming forward with more details and the spec and price, any tiny piece of information is being pounced on by all the gaming media, Nintendo may think that this is good a in a way free advertising and it's good that are people talking about the Switch, but I think that it could have (I think it has already been having an effect) an adverse effect because the speculation is driving people away by the negative outlook from some quarters and over-hyped by others that the system simply cannot live up to.

My view is that regardless of how the Switch performs there will be another version, either bigger or smaller but more powerful none the less (maybe with Maxwell chips) circa eighteen months from the initial release.

There is no need for Nintendo to come forward with specs. Most people don't care and by the time it is released there will be more info. After release people will tear it apart and get to the nitty gritty anyway. Patience is the game at play.

The 3DS is way, way, way overpriced compared to its hardware. You shouldn't compare the two.

I'm no developer, so i don't know the specific answer to that, but it's safe to say that it's going to vary from game to game. For example, a port of Inside won't require the same work of a game like The Witcher 3, obviously. I could tell you something like "TW3 would run at 720p mid-low settings vs high settings on PS4-Xbox One at a higher res", there's plenty of these assumptions in every hardware speculation thread, but i can't know that for sure.

I think its the most realistic scenario right now, not bad considering its also a portable.

Yup.

This thread seems to be going places.

GAF and jumping to conclusions.

That's usually how it goes. The longer the thread the bigger the crazy.

Honestly, I would be a bit disappointed if it turns out not being Pascal but it wouldn't be the end of the world if so.

It's funny to me how powerful people thought this would be. There's a lot of denial, and people are in for a reality check.

Having said that, I never expected Nintendo to be able to compete power-wise. It's still going to be cool though, and I think it's a great direction for Nintendo.

Goddammit read the article and realize its actually nonsense

Sigh...

I'm actually glad that the Switch will only be good for cartoon graphics, because then maybe we'll finally have a system that can run Darkstalkers in 3D.

Why are people mentioning ps4?

the assumption was near xbox one maybe a bit weaker, which isn't unreasonable at all. Considering xbox one was underpowered even in 2013, and without the motion thing it probably could've retailed at $300.

Here's this thing they could've made a console that is really close to xbox one so that at least it would seem reasonable to port third party games that are akin to xbox one to the portable.

Why get third parties on NX rather than xbox one? Because well it's also portable... There are numerous reasons for getting the game on ps4 or xbox one regardless of this. More people and better looking on ps4, online architecture on xbox or whatever reason. The scorpio is releasing and the pro is out but there are still developing games for the base consoles. If it's on par with xbox isn't that more appealing for third party perspective and assuming it is successful then perhaps we'd see more.

There's always a reason when there doesn't really need to be. This is one of the few times Nintendo could persuade buyers to purchase on their machine as opposed to the others, even though they aren't "directly" competing with Microsoft and Sony
I don't care too much since I got an xbox but definitely not as interested as before.

Also people talking about skyrim, dark souls and such.. I'd rather see the game first and that it is out before actually putting any faith into it. Plenty of times games were cancelled, so forget about it

This works if the switch is able to handle Xbox One ports without too much work. It seems to be the case so that's great.

I'm not sure this really matters in the end. Nintendo has a performance goal in mind regardless of the hardware. If they do end up using Pascal, I can see Nintendo taking advantage of the architectural improvements in ways like lowering the energy consumption instead of raising the clock speed to improve performance.

I wonder where all these people disappointed that Nintendo didn't go for the most cutting edge available solution were when Microsoft and Sony decided to go with a fucking jaguar CPU.

In terms of handheld chips, Switch is going to be extremely competitive. Much more than either the DS or the 3DS were against their contemporaries. It's ALMOST as good as it can possibly get in a handheld, yet here we are with people acting like it's another Wii or Wii U.

So, how much cartoony power are we talking about? Are anime supported or the animations may be to much for Maxwell? Can it run Steambot Willie at least?

Tegra X1 is more cutting edge than PS4 and Xbone is despite it being a third or fourth as powerful as those consoles

Lol.

Last time specs for the Wii U came out, I pointed out how it was about as powerful as my Samsung S3.

If this is true, its another pathetic piece of console hardware. When will Nintendo grasp that to get third parties on board, they need hardware parity with the other consoles?

It's not a handheld with 2 hours of battery life. Its a massive compromise.

So you want a handheld with comparable power to a PS4?

Judging by the recent presentation, plenty of third parties are on board. If the thing sells well, they'll stick around. Money talks.

Do you realise Maxwell architecture does not indicate a decrease in efficiency compared to Pascal? 16nm Maxwell is as efficient as Pascal, so even taking the article at face value we still know nothing new about battery life.

No I want a handheld that is a handheld, and a console that is a console. This hybrid.... is not a good version of either.

Dammit Nintendo, you had one job.

not ps4, close to xbox one, unreasonable? Being able to run close in performance to xbox in dock mode and do whatever it needs to do to compensate for potability would be good. The xbox scorpio and ps4 pro are out to prolong the span of these consoles a bit longer. Parity with base xbox would mean that power isn't as big of a factor when porting.

It released in 2013 and was under powered even when unveiled, i don't understand why it would be unreasonable. Hopefully third parties are actually on board and not just a bunch of names of companies.

AS wii u owner I'd have to see the third parties first

It's rumored to have a 5-8 hour battery life and be able to get any port from PS4 and XB1 with ease. And this rumor changes nothing about that, even if we assume it's true. So what the hell are you talking about?

Not articles but more like youtube videos

Gamespot

Gamespot daily news

Actually IGN is innocent, i thought it was the daily fix with the blonde girl. Mixing up videos with all the catching up i'm doing after exams. I made an error, i'll fix the original post
Love the header pic of the first video.
Nintendo Switch only 1 Teraflop?
This tiny, compact console is underpowered as fuck

lol

Have you seen gears of war 4 running on the Xbox one? There's no way the switch gets close to that.

As a console, its going to be competing against the PS4 Pro and the Scorpio. Both are leagues ahead in terms of computing power, assuming Maxwell.

As a handheld its going up against itself. And I'm betting that unless they have performed miracles with the battery, it won't get close to 5-8 hours unless its just sitting on a menu screen. Maxwell is a 28nm chip.

Why am I not surprised.

These Switch threads were filled with people who continuously confused their desires with reality. Blathering tech talk about what's possible and logical and completely losing the bigger picture in the process. This is still Nintendo and they are out to make a profit on these things.

The X1(which is Maxwell) is 20nm.

Sure, its great to be able to get a low cost BOM and sell something that people want.
But to keep selling, they need to be able to pull in ports of games running on competing hardware. So no doubt they will make a profit off this if its as described. But for how long?
