Verge: Moto X to be revealed Aug 1

front looks exactly like GNex and GNex had the same screen size, resolution and onscreen buttons.

do you think Goog took returned GNex inventory to build the X?

I think this might be my favorite phone looks-wise. Up there with iPhone. GNex front always looked classy - all black with the OLED. It's the back that looked bad. Now the X looks cool with the customization. I'm up for contract in June 2014... might get the new version out then, or bit on a Google Play version if they ever release it unlocked for Verizon @ ~$300.

Not true. Various phone like the Lumia 920, 928, 925, 1020, which all have Optical Image Stabilization, as well as the HTC One work better in low-light setting than the iPhone.
The 1020 pretty much wipes the floor with the iPhones camera. Just zooming into full-res 38 MP photos is really awesome. The reviews have been very positive about the camera.

You couldnt be any more wrong about that.

Out of the photos that were posted, the iPhone5 phone looks substantially better than every other phone.

If you can have an amazing screen like on the One/S4/iPhone 5 for $600/$199 on contract, why would you want a phone with a turd of a screen like this for the same price?

That's pretty much the issue. The phone will be compare to other phones at its price point. Now granted, its STILL cheaper than the other phones that people are talking about - but its not THAT much cheaper that people will be calling it a "Good Buy". Google/Motorola will have to win the hipshare war for this thing to have a chance.

NOT ALL IS LOST:

"Update: AT&T says that the full off-contract retail price for the 16GB and 32GB Moto X will be $575 and $630, respectively. (It's worth noting that AT&T phones bought at full retail price are still locked to the carrier.) That pricing could hint to how much the Google Play edition will cost, but we may see a pricing scheme similar to the Nexus 4. When sold unlocked directly through Google Play, the 16GB Nexus 4 cost $349, while an on-contract model from T-Mobile cost $199. Meanwhile, the carrier set the full retail price of the Nexus 4 at $499 — inexplicably more than the unlocked price of the phone from Google itself. If Google and Motorola took that route, it could explain some of the rumors prior to today that said the Moto X would cost around $299 unlocked. "

Well they really messed up not making any direct announcements about it.

Man it's like you guys are walking around with 5 phones in your pocket and constantly comparing the displays. I can see an argument for specific resolutions (720/1080) because of native content, but the rest of this babble about deeper blacks and color palettes sounds like hogwash. Are you really doing high end design on your phones? Do you need SWOP CMYK profiles to display perfectly? Are the blacks really just not black enough for that movie your watching on your 5" screen? Give me a break.

colour accuracy is important for photos well before you throw shitty filters on top of it.

Absolutely. Looks like my Galaxy Nexus needs to last until the Nexus 5 shows up.

I really dount there will be another google phone this year.

If they do they would have priced this thing at 99 with contract to leave room for the Nexus 5.

So is the labor cost of domestic production the reason why it costs as much as a high end phone but has mid-tier specs? If what they say about the battery life being about 3 times longer than current phones is true, then I'm absolutely on board with giving up a removable battery or 1080p resolution.

All I want to know is if it will have no trouble running the Android OS and apps at 720P for at least a couple years. The people complaining about the resolution and processor need to remember that it's basically the same as the latest iPhones and Windows phones. The hands-on impressions do say that it feels as smooth as the iPhone5 or latest Androids so hopefully that's true in the long-run.

Is it fair to compare this "event" with the Xbox One keynote?

So far I haven't seen anyone in this thread pre-order the phone, which is alot less than the people who ordered Xb1.

This product makes no sense. Mid-tier, high price, customizability that few people care about. Made in America is probably what's driving up the cost.

N5 is the one that will be cheap off contact. That was never not gonna be the case.

Wow just caught up with the news, $200 ON contract? Welp I guess this is a test to see if the google brand will get people to buy mid tier specs for high price.

Why would google ask LG to make 2 nexus phones in a row though? That just seem like wishful thinking to me.

Because it has happened before? Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus, both by Sammy (back to back) and to an extent the HTC G1 and Nexus One.

that was a disappointment. All the hype was largely built on it's potential off-contract price. Wish they would've hinted there would be nothing different coming as far as pricing and carrier involvement to temper things a bit.

I think it goes to show how much people want to not dick around with carrier contracts. I know I'm done getting locked into shitty carriers, ends up costing much more in the long term then just buying the phone off contract.

So, I'm at the launch party:

Phone is nice and snappy. Lowlight pictures on it were OK.

It's a great $300 off-contract device.

I'm still hyped over the phone tech, even if they went crazy with the price.

I'm dying to reads andantechs full review on it.

they could hardly get anyone to buy their phone when it was top-tier (camera-aside) and 300 unlocked.... not going to happen. Yes, the N4 sold well, but not flagship well.

I don't know if I necessarily agree with the argument "people don't care about specs." Sure, most don't actually know what's in their phone - nobody knows the difference between an A6, a Snapdragon, or something else. But I know plenty of people get a new phone who don't follow the industry, but love to say it's the fastest. "My iPhone 5 is faster than my 4S." My S4 is better than the iPhone 5." "I didn't get the HTC One because the salesguy told me the S4 is faster."

Shame about the price - for $300, I may have done it just to enjoy Android on the side. But it looks like it might be MUCH more than that off contract on the Play Store.

I know everyone else is freaking out, but this phone looks amazing to me.

I do enjoy the customizability. The vast majority of android phones are disgusting looking (do you really want faux-carbon fiber).

Made in the US is a very big deal. I realize it's components are still foreign made, but I would practically buy this on principle alone.

Fast enough for normal use, with extra long battery life. In my eyes the worst feature of every smart phone is that it dies half way through the day if you don't carefully manage its use.

I just need to see more info on the camera and I may be sold.

You are not alone man, I'm certainly loving it. I guess the price is a little high but for me it seems like a great buy. Phone looks well built (and customization is a nice touch), it seems to have good battery life (at least according to the few hands-on available), voice control seems to work very well, and it did good on benchmarks (even though I don't really care about specs as much as I care about how snappy it feels under normal use).

I honestly believe guys like Robert Scoble & Leo Laporte really over-hyped the phone.

Customization, Voice Commands & Battery Life (?) are the wins

But that price is god awful (on-contract & off) and i`m a guy who just bought a Lumia 1020 so i have no problems paying up.... its worth maybe $400 max to me atleast
