I honestly believe guys like Robert Scoble & Leo Laporte really over-hyped the phone.

Customization, Voice Commands & Battery Life (?) are the wins

But that price is god awful (on-contract & off) and i`m a guy who just bought a Lumia 1020 so i have no problems paying up.... its worth maybe $400 max to me atleast
The two greatest has-beens of tech.

Everyone needs to stop ASSUMING this phone will have extra long battery life until we see proof. Every other optimistic assumption before today is exactly why everyone is down on the phone. We know the battery size, screen size, and processor, so I wouldnt expect any miracles with the battery life. I expect it to be solid, somewhere in the Galaxy S3 to S4 range, but I wouldnt expect the Razr Max or Note 2 battery life.

has-beens is a bit harsh...but they both over-hyped the phone.

Ultimately Motorola played carrier-ball and this is the result, not the epic game changer many anticipated.

Its a fine phone....I just don't think it will sell at $199

The way Guy Kawasaki skated around that question today made me laugh....I`m really doubtful its amazing...and AnandTech showed alot of camera shots....its better than the HTC One but it seems like the colors are off

so you get to choose from dozens of background covers, including wood, but since it's not removable, what do you do when you're bored of it? Get a new phone?

You can send it back in for a different cover. I think the turnaround was 5 days they said?

So yeah, they gave away nothing. This launch party was pretty useless. I heard more than three people refer to the phone as the "new Samsung." Such a fail.

Poor Motorola. Why would Google let this happen.
I know everyone else is freaking out, but this phone looks amazing to me.

I do enjoy the customizability. The vast majority of android phones are disgusting looking (do you really want faux-carbon fiber).

Made in the US is a very big deal. I realize it's components are still foreign made, but I would practically buy this on principle alone.

Fast enough for normal use, with extra long battery life. In my eyes the worst feature of every smart phone is that it dies half way through the day if you don't carefully manage its use.

I just need to see more info on the camera and I may be sold.
I'm sorry but this sounds like the post of a Moto rep.

So it sucks? This thing was getting hyped in the tech scene for ages... but it seems boring.
It's just another smartphone, I guess.

The more I see this phone in multiple angles, the most I think it looks fucking great. Looks way better than the S4.

some people actually care where their money ends up.

Apple Store workers get paid more than these guys, and they employ 28,000 more people than the 2,000 Moto X assemblers.

I think there are over-romanticized notions about assembly in the USA and how it is considered "good." Imagine this: Start a factory in Africa, giving Africans an opportunity to make a better living for them and their families, sell the phone for a dirt cheap price instead of this $575 price, sell it in brick and mortar stores all over the US that employ 20,000 retail staff, and they can swap out the covers for you in store.

I bet the price being expensive has nothing to do with it being built in the US. Carriers likely wanted it to be the standard price so Google gives them a subsidy to sell the phone. Opposite model when compared to the iPhone.

That's likely why Google made cheaper hardware. So they'd eat less of the cost.

You're forgetting all the tax shelters they're getting.

Its got a big battery and (relatively speaking) slow innards so battery life should ace most of the other top of the line phones out there. The Motorola device was clearly designed to be an everyman "compromise" device and I think it will do good there for its demographic.

Its just not the droid I'm looking for.

Someone check this guy's post history for Surface RT and Wii U, thx.

Well basically the big carriers simply won't carry it if it can not be sold at a certain price point. This is where google knee down and give up the N4 prepaid stradegy and suck the carriers dicks. Somebody draw a red circle on Auguest 1 on the calendar.

At lease when Samsung HTC Apple do it they give you $600 worth of hardware.

At this point, I'm just going to hope for a Black Friday sale. Or, if the phone doesn't sell well in Q4, a Q1 2014 sale.

Big battery compared to what? Motorola X has a 2200 mah battery. The Galaxy S4 is at 2600, Htc One is 2300+, Sony's flagship is 2400+, and the new LG Optimus 2 will be 2600+. Like the rest of the X Phone's specs, the battery would be fairly impressive if it came out last year.

The pricing is ridiculous, Google needs to take over the cellphone industry.

And why do the prices of previous generation phones do not drop? Galaxy 3 is still $550 on Amazon, $600 on Verizon and $700 from Samsung. Every other electronic devices falls in price...except for these phones.

I guess that the price is fair then.. If it takes them 4 days to assemble a phone.

Seems like an awesome phone to me. As long as the camera is good, I'll get it. Don't see why the S4 is better than this. HTC one maybe. The unique features seem really useful to me versus a lot of the upgrades the ohter phones have aside from HTC One's camera.

What a waste of time. Can't believe I waited with anticipation for this announcement. I was ready to put my GS4 on ebay.

Then they come out with THIS!? A midrange phone with a flagship phone's price. LMAO

12 hour shifts? Is this the 1800s?

This is just a travesty all around. Who in the hell would want that job and why is its creation to be rewarded and applauded? Menial $9/12hr days performing soul crushingly repetitive tasks--get the fuck outta here Google/Moto. I would much rather work retail/food/construction for the same (or more) pay that could at least offer some semblance of variety, down time, and free thinking. Perhaps most concerning is that I'm yet to see a tech site/blog really call this thing out for the over hyped, over priced bomba that it is--never mind post that infograph. Google's ad pockets are deep.

Isn't it an impressive feat since the size of the phone is the smallest out of all of those (would need to double check)? Combine that with 720p, which is a big upgrade from my Galaxy S, the battery life is theoretically really good. Issue here is price now.

There is hope on the pricing.

T-Mobile isn't going to sell the phone directly, deferring customers to Motorola.com. So what Moto has in store might be good, considering past situations with Nexus 4 pricing. Note that T-Mobile no longer provide contracts for phones. http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/2/4581926/t-mobile-wont-sell-moto-x-in-stores

Is this sarcasm? I can't tell. There is nothing impressive about having a smaller size phone versus the ones I mentioned if the battery is also the smallest, and the screen is also smaller than the other mentioned phones. It's also the thickest phone versus the group even though it has the smallest battery. I can agree that the battery life is theoretically good, but that's also the case with the Galaxy S4, HTC One, Sony's flagship etc. When people are saying it'll have amazing battery life is where I call bs until we see proof because everything else about this phone that was hyped up has been proven to be meh.

If people want a meh phone for a flagship price then I won't argue with that. Also, the sample pics from the camera so far have also been meh.
