Verge: Time Warner Cable says there's no consumer demand for gigabit internet

One day Verizon will install FiOS in my neighborhood/building, and that will be the day I no longer have to deal with TWC.

I though Verizon halted FiOS expansion awhile back. I'm pretty happy with my 100mb connection through charter, but I pay more than what people in Kansas City pay for 1/10th the download speed, and my upload speed doesn't even come close.

TWC is full of it.

If they are anything like Rogers, it's probably due to insane pricing.

Under "What can you do with 500GB a month?" they should just put "The fucking porn!!"

By my calculations that monthly cap is 4.4 hours of full speed data. What's the point?

Dude, bits are expensive. Do you have any idea what the going rate is on a kilogram of bits? Especially when like last year, there are unprecedented numbers of bit mine collapses.

As someone who has only had Comcast or AT&T for internet, give me 100 real mbps per month for a dollar per mbps. I can't watch HD YouTube videos with 8 mbps.

And on the sea things are even worse with that pirates harassing our bit fishermen.

I think they're right insofar as most people not needing a gigabit, but they're horribly mistaken in thinking that affordable high speed internet isn't something with mass market appeal. The current ISP's often can't even deliver the speeds they advertise, and people are paying out the ass for that service. I don't know if Google can make money doing what they're doing, but it's the brightest hope for the industry since Fios and Docsis 3.0 (which cable companies eventually just used to create even more gouge-tastic speed tiers).

Living so close to Google Fiber is agonizing.

There's no demand because the vast majority of general public don' t know there's a faster, cheaper option out there yet. They're just milking it as long as they can get away with it.

The cheapest commercial wideband cable internet TWC offers in my area is 35/5 Mbps and it cost $320/month. They actually justify this by stating commercial packets are prioritized over residential packets.

Google Fiber is $70/mo? Yikes, I don't know if it's just that american ISPs charge a lot more than here, but it still seems pretty inaccessible for small/middle income folks.

250 mbps download... 500 gb limit.. Ugh.... Insane fast speeds + low limit doesn't really help much.

Around my local area, cable internet (20-30mbps, depending on the provider) will run you around $50/month. I would gladly pay the extra $20 to get gigabit internet. US internet is incredibly more expensive compared to certain countries.

Yea, it's my router. I really gotta replace it but I know fuck all about routers.

Run a speedtest at speedtest.net, and if it's nowhere near 50mbit, upgrade to wireless N...for the children...please think of the children.

For what it is, it's incredibly cheap. We're paying more than that right now for 23mbit, and google's service is a full gigabit.

How does fiber optic work? I'm just curious because Google says there is a construction fee. So is fiber optics essentially a radio receiver that accepts direct frequencies from satellites thus cutting out the intermediaries currently receiving then rerouting those signals?

"I wish I lived in Kansas City," the world said for the very first time.

And likely the last.

Piss off. This Gates burnt end sandwich I'm eating right now is too good for you.

Also, funny TWC doesn't even believe this themselves, since they blew up one of KC's old beloved wine bars two weeks ago while digging holes (without a permit) to lay down their own fiber.

Also, obligatory:

As someone who already has pretty good internet, that last option is just amazing. Is there really no catch?

Up to 5Mbps download, 1Mbps upload speed • No data caps • Free service guaranteed for at least 7 years

But for those who only want the internet (not for games or download)

is a pretty good deal

Fucking pisses me off when people think current speeds are enough and will suffice forever. Backwards thinking morons, are they fucking blind? Have they not seen how far the internet has evolved in the last ten years alone? Who fucking knows where we will be in the next ten.

In essence its true, us folks want it but the common man doesnt care as information is coming at a speed he/she finds near instance even if we dont

You have to get them on a profiteering angle- point out TWC's cost to provide the internet at around $3 per customer and how it's a 95% profit margin, and it's not enough for them.

dude... you got tourettes.

go see a doctor.

and i can see time warner would think there isnt a demand. to the average consumer, they just need internet for email, facebook, and youtube. if it loads fine, why change/upgrade it?

you could have made the same sort of point for the internet itself 15 years ago.

to the average consumer, they just need USPS for mail (which they can also use for sharing videos, pictures, etc.), and if they want to watch videos they can go to Blockbuster, for books there's the library/Borders. if those all work fine, why change/upgrade it?

I want google to expand their fiber, but I wish they offered a mid-tier option between the 1gigabit and free 5mb options. 35/month for 512mbit? I'd jump on that shitnozzle so fast.

lol wut?

Fiber optic cable uses glass fiber that transmits data by flashes of light. The construction fee is for them to lay the cable underground from where the service originates to your house. Then to wire up your house for TV and internet.

Probably because the top tiers are expensive. I pay $115 a month for internet only and that's for a 50/10 connection. I doubt there are very few people in my area that are willing to pay that much just for internet. Google's pricing is much more reasonable and you get a lot more for your money.

Jesus. In Japan I paid $80 per month after yen conversion for 120mb down, 80mb up. US's Internet rates are so messed up.

The overwhelming majority of people don't give a shit about super fast intenet.

I care. I have a 50mb pipe and it's just not enough for our needs. But then again, I need a new router.

But your average internet user is playing facebook games, looking at youtube vids and the occasional video chat with relatives.

They're not streaming HD movies while someone else is streaming netflix while someone else is on XBL playing a shooter while someone else is streaming Spotify to their iPhone while they do the dishes.

like Steve Jobs said, people don't know what they want until you show it to them. and lots of people have netflix/hulu/etc while their kid is playing a game/browsing the net and on and on. it's 2013 in five years things will change drastically, five more years and current speeds will be inadequate. you have to think to the future.

To an extent he is right, we don't need a gigabit, but we need a far better service than what the cable companies are currently offering for the $. Google fiber is a much better value than what anybody else is doing and really shows the industry how things should be done.

That $50 can almost pay for a month of fiber!
