Verizon will soon throttle (unlimited) LTE data beginning Oct. 1st

After using all 4 major telecom in the past 10 years, Verizon is worth the extra cash. At the end of the day, you want a solid connection that won't shit on you when you are on the free way, entering a building or when traveling.

I don't have an unlimited, though I did sign up with verizon when they did the double data promotion when they first introduced LTE back in 2011.

Might be time to switch to T-Mobile.

That's what I'll be doing next week. I got a threatening email from Verizon this past Monday morning saying:

Your Verizon Wireless account balance is still past due. If a payment is not made in full immediately, we may suspend services on your account and a $15 per line reconnection fee will be charged to reinstate your account.

The bill was due the previous Friday. So, after one business day, I'm threatened with disconnection?

This is why I'm on the Tmobile $30 a month plan. Fuck big carriers, fuck their contracts, and fuck their anti-consumer nonsense. If I'm going to get screwed with data caps and throttling I sure as hell won't pay out the ass for it.

Exactly, which is why I bought a Nexus 4 and Straight Talk. Got fed up with playing the Verizon BS game.

T-Mobile and Sprint will surely follow suit eventually.

It's really over, isn't it?

Screw it, time to go the other way. They're prying my Verizon Unlimited away, so I will go to Republic Wireless or Straight Talk or something. Pay nothing, get nothing. Better than pay and get crap.

A lot of us bought phones like the Galaxy S4 full retail price to keep unlimited since upgrades forced you to give up unlimited. I use about 9 gbs a month on streaming, photo backup, directions etc. 4.7 can work but is annoying.

Sprint already uses this cool throttling technique called never being able to have more than 1 bar of 3g

Who the hell has unlimited data on verzion?

I do

I have unlimited 3G because I'm still using the Motorola Droid X I bought like five years ago. I have no idea how much longer it'll hold out. If I upgrade I lose my unlimited data. They've got me by the dick. I'd switch to T-Mobile but their coverage sucks here.

I bought a used Droid Razr Maxx and it has worked very well for me. They don't give you a 4G SIM but you can pick that up at the Verizon store and you're set.

I bought mine from a seller called MobileSpree and it was in great condition

Well that might be the final reason to make me jump ship. Not getting the Nexus line was a pretty big deal but I stuck it out because of unlimited data and the Moto X Cyber monday deal. If they make my unlimited data basically obsolete I don't see a reason to stay.

I don't hit my soft limits on Sprint, and I love my iPhone 5s. But I was thinking of leaving Sprint after one of their gold star customer service fuck ups and it looks like by the time I can actually sign a new contract, Verizon will act as badly as Sprint does. There are days I just don't want a smartphone anymore, frankly. Reach me via carrier pigeon if urgent.

I refuse to believe 95% of Verizon customers stay below 4.7 gigs a month. Most? Absolutely. But the threshold for the absolute biggest data users has got to be substantially higher than that. Verizon are lying through their teeth.

They made me get rid of my unlimited plan when I wanted to buy the iPhone 5. Went from unlimited to 2GB and I almost go over it every month. Hate Verizon now tbh.

Also if I do go over it, my data doesn't shit out on me. Its $10 for another GB.

Wait, people have unlimited 4G LTE data under Verizon?

I thought you could only get limited plans...that's what I have...
I'm grandfathered in too. I've been sticking with them because of this but looks like it's finally time to jump ship. T-mobile seems ok but I guess I need to start researching.

I have t mobile and they drop speeds to unusable levels once you pass 2 GB. still considered "UNLIMITED".

If you pay for 2gb and everything over that is just throttled, I think thats a way better deal than getting hit with overage fees.

Has anyone else on unlimited already felt like something like this has already gone into affect? I generally never have my WiFi on but lately have had to use it because things seem to be running really slow. YouTube for instance becomes unwatchable at times. I generally use about 6gb a month.

How is someone even using 4GB a month? I have unlimited still, but I use less than 1GB a month and I do all my browsing on my Verizon phone.

Ugh ugh ugh ugh. My wife and I have paid unsubsidized prices for phones twice now to keep our "grandfathered" unlimited data after Verizon changed their contract to remove such plans when you upgrade. I pay quite a bit of money to keep our plan and use between 5 and 8 gigabytes a month. I will move on if this hits me. Sleazy US telecoms. I wish regulation wasn't such a god-damned bad word in this country.

I was able to find a loophole by lying my ass off to keep my unlimited plan. I can't even remember the details now. I basically used my upgrade on my wife's line, but I didn't let the guy activate the phone as I told him it was a surprise for my wife and that I didn't want her current phone to be shut off until I gave it to her. When I left the store, I called Verizon and said that I wanted to activate the phone on my line to which they "fuck off". But I stayed on the phone with them for two hours saying that the sales rep said I could do it this way and eventually they caved. It has been well worth it since I used 10-20 GBs a month. I feel bad for the sales rep that I threw under the bus.

Once, the iPhone 6 comes out, I'm switching to T-Mobile anyway. Hopefully they still have the ETF buyout still.

Streaming with any kind of regularity easily puts monthly usage in the realm of GBs.

I'd love to stream music in my car while driving but my family plan of 2GB across 5 people makes it prohibitive.

Yeah, T-Mobile called all of the plan Unlimited, but really the only true unlimited one is the most expensive ones. I used to be on 5GB, upgraded to 7GB to suit my need.

Thanks Crunchyrolls.

I wish I can manually decide on which data to use 2G speed so it doesn't count toward my data plan, like switching to 2G to read news, then 4G to stream video. :\

I mean you could just switch the phones from one line to the other on the website also. All you had to do was activate the phone on your wife's line and then actiavte her old phone on her line and then activate your new phone on your line.

Verizon will begin to throttle unlimited LTE users starting Oct. 1st...!?

They've been throttling me for months now. Netflix through portable hotspot will rack up those Gigabytes real quick though.

I only use it sparingly, but my phone has logged close to 16GB's in the last month.....
with a 12 GB average over the last 4 or so months.

and for those wondering how that is possible, my GF doesn't have internet at her place till tomorrow, so we've been using my phone to connect multiple TV's and a computer to the internet since I have unlimited internet.

Just used 20gigs last week alone, but it's their own fault anyways.

Well their FIOS side's, since they won't install my TV/internet/phone until mid-August.

Thats some happy horse bullshit. I left AT&T for T-Mobile a few weeks ago. So far service is pretty damn good, at least in the general area when where I am. Dat unlimited data is so nice. Those data overages were killing me.

I've never had unlimited data but it seems to be a jab at the remaining unlimited data users rather than fixing their network

Join Sprint! Guaranteed Unlimited for LIFE! No throttling.

But crap service. I live in Tampa. I get like .5 bars out of 5 in my home. My calls are always dropping. Coverage is laughable. What does it matter if you get unlimited data if you'll never get decent performance on their network.

I really need to find a decent smartphone to buy and just switch to T-Mobile. I keep putting it off due to phone prices but I can't stand dealing with Verizon anymore. Unfortunately, they just bought Cincinnati Bell so I'll have to deal with them no matter what when it comes to home internet.

*Don't think they're actually taking over the other services now that I think about it.

Who the hell has unlimited data on verzion?

They actually still offer it to public agencies on state contracts. So them not offering it anymore to the general public isn't because they can't do it, it's because they don't want to do it.

I knew this was coming. Been month to month unlimited for a while. I'm well under 5gb a month though to be honest. Depending on how much throttling they do I might go back under contract. Verizon is the only game in town in my area for reliable coverage.

I do hate how people brag about how much cell data they use. You go on cell phone forums and they wear their usage like a badge of honor. Its a mobile data plan, it's not meant to pull down 200gbs of data a month.

If you are tethering it's very easy to go over 4GB. Last week I was out of town and didn't have access to WiFi. Ended up hitting 5GB just from browsing, no YouTube, streaming, etc.
