VG Tech: Bioshock PS4 vs PS3 Frame Rate Test

I seriously don't understand how you mess up the water in Bioshock. I guess I will stick with the old pc versions.

This post explains it'll be a separate entry and you can play either the original or remaster.

Oh thank fuck. I want to give the remaster a shot, but if it doesn't sit well with me because of the changes I'll just replay the PC original.

It's definitely time for another playthrough though, and these threads are just making it harder to wait for the PC remaster.

Definitely looks like another lackluster remaster effort. Shame, Bioshock deserves a 60fps version without a significant compromise (jank physics in original PC version, lack of water and changed/worse lighting in this)

I'll watch again and see if I notice anything. Usually screen-tearing is like someone violently attacking me with a pineapple, so I'd be surprised if I overlooked it somehow.

Please let me know because I am standing in front of a locked box in the basement that says "OPEN IN CASE OF BAD REMASTER" and I don't know what's in it other than that there's no going back once it's open.

Here's the worst example:

The red lines at the side of the image are meant to represent screen tearing.
Is it possible the test is misinterpreting a special effect? Because that doesn't look like screen-tearing to me. It looks like the distortion from the gun's heat exhaust.

UPDATE: Or stepping through a waterfall, it would appear.

LOL! Oh man, I'm really curious what's in there. Take one for the team... :-)

I opened it...

There's just a note...

It says "There was a SOLUTION here. It's gone now."

Sounds like, whatever it was, some poor soul already got to it when the Silent Hill Collection hit PS3.

That means... I have nothing. I am trapped here. I am stuck with a bad BioShock remaster. This is my Hell.

This is what happens when Ken Levine leaves the company.

That handsome, beer-swilling monkey-man with an amazing imagination and a heart of gold.

All he wanted was us to stop making SFM porn of Elizabeth.

This is karma.

Doesn't seem to be the case I'm afraid. Here's a shoddy screengrab from the video showing a very obvious tear.

VG Tech likely uses the same, or a similar, algorithm to Digital Foundry and whilst it's definitely fallible I don't think it's got it wrong this time, especially with the massive drops in framerate the tears accompany.

EDIT: Here's a DF video explaining how they monitor screen tears: https://youtu.be/KVg19CbkXR4?t=311 and if VG Tech is using similar or the same software they can check just as easily to avoid errors.

Aw, shit. Well, hopefully it's extremely rare and only happens during intense moments. It seemed to nearly coincide with the player stepping through the waterfall, so I didn't even notice it.

30fps really is ass. Can't see how people say they can't tell the difference. What is 30fps even good for? open world 3rd person games and rpgs?

They messed up the water in the Bioshock remaster?. Really? REALLY? *sigh* This is basically like messing up the fog effects in a Silent Hill remaster.

Not buying then. Too bad. I was really interested in this since I did not play BS2 or any of the DLC.

The comments from these Gamespot guys about the water are even funnier now. So much competence and knowledge.

Screen tearing is one of the few unforgivable things in gaming, for me. It makes every games a fucking miserable experience. How does this happen on a goddamn remaster? If you're greenlighting a remaster not made by Bluepoint or Nixxes, just cancel it. All these lazy cash grabs.

Man that's annoying. Some things are improved, other stuff isn't.

I hate it when that happens. EVERYTHING should be improved.

I don't recall the frame rate ever going that low on ps3 when I played the game.
That's the thing, I played it on PS3, but it never felt so bad to me, but stats don't lie. The remaster has some pretty nice improvements, seems there are some light shafts not present in the PS3 version and fire effects look higher rez, better AA and textures are also improvements I've spotted. water seems to be more foamy on the PS3, but to me they flow a bit more naturally and better on the PS4.......

There are some dips into the 30's when things gets hectic, so it seems the improvements are a little more taxing overall. Hope they at least patch ti for more improved framerate when things get unpredictable. This is one thing about Bisohock, you could trigger so many effects in tandem, it's no doubt it's a strain on the GPU. Looking forward to see how the others hold up. IQ looks much improved from last gen consoles, we'll also see how these remasters run on similar PC's to the consoles in a few days.

It looks fine to me. To me it looks better. I honestly dont like the blurry froth stream on last gen.

As someone else said in a different thread:

I don't think it's actually possible to watch the entire comparison from that thread and still think the water looks good. At first I was like 'oh that's not bad' during the plane crash. Then you see the collapsed tube and the waterfalls cascading over shit later and it's like...oh

So glad I'm oblivious to this sort of thing - it looks great to me.

Amen. Watching that video (drops during the intense firefight at the end aside), I was happy with what I saw. Mostly stable 60 FPS and improved textures at 1080p. Maybe it's because I have never played these games before I was happy to drop $60 on this and have not been disappointed while playing it.

The tearing wouldn't bother me, minor tearing if it just affects the top/bottom of the screen is fine with me in favour of smoother play. Bummed about the water and lighting though.

wow that rough. I guess it will be no rush to pick this one up. All the tearing is disastrous.

EDIT: and the water is a downgrade from PS3 levels. what happened?

In the side by side, the first looks like an artistic change, which is odd.
But the reflections in the next bit look bad.

What have you done to my precious baby? How could this happen? Screen tearing? SCREEN TEARING?

Of all the games to not take care of, BioShock is not the one to fumble.

And my water effects... My beautiful sea... Or maybe it's the lighting that's killing it. This isn't what I have been waiting for. This is not my beautiful house. This is not my beautiful wife.

Didn't I just see that in the video? I only watched it once and I'm mobile. I would love to be wrong.

Let the water hold me down if I'm wrong.

Some are saying it looks the same as it ever was.

Glad I'm not alone in thinking a lot of the original actually looks better. Not IQ/framerate, but the art/lighting/effects.

Framedrops and screen-tearing on a 10 year old game. Amazing. Meanwhile Bioshock Infinite on PC is playable with way over 100fps on modern cards.

Wasn't one of the only areas of GTA V PS4/XB1 that was worse off was the foam parts of the water? Was that ever patched back in? Perhaps there's more going on with that kind of effect than we know.
