VG247: Sony 'confident' of PS4 release before Xbox 720 + more

I think they'd be doing well to just get it out for Christmas rather than arbitrarily beating MS to market, but hey.

The design goalposts for PS4, including specs, were in place at least two years ago, we were told. Our source said that Sony is “confident” it will have the console at market ahead of the next generation Xbox next Christmas.

“Sony are completely in the belief that they have the jump on Microsoft this time,” they said. “You should be watching the timing of next year’s E3 keynotes, and who’s going to go first.”

"Top line publishers already know about it,” our source said. “Developers working with publishers – like Ubisoft, for example – already know what’s going on. They’re already working on it.”

While “most developers” will be fully briefed “by the end of this year,” some have been invited to events in May and June in the US.

Another source has told us more information is going to be issued about PS4 to developers under NDA in May.

We were told today that Crytek was scaling its tech on the assumption that PS4 was going to be using a 24-core Cell processor as opposed to the eight-core unit in PS3. The studio was forced to halt development and start afresh when it was informed PlayStation 4 won’t be using Cell at all.

In addition VG247 has been told that elements of Vita’s launch hardware were changed to ensure that PS4 and Vita will be able to connect in a similar style to Nintendo’s Wii U and its controller – due for release this year – with Vita’s being used to control PS4 games with both twin sticks and touch.

If true I think they jumping the gun reacting too soon to Wii U and nextbox talk

ps next gen starting already they not going to beat Wii U out the door

A spring 2013 launch in Japan followed by the rest of the world in the fall wouldn't surprise me at all.

TGS reveal.

Regarding that, they only quote one source. Sony's not very good with their initial release claims... I think Sony they're more broadly aiming for release by Xmas in one - maybe two - markets.

So can someone summarise for me.

Based on current rumours, the Xbox 720 will be a beast, the PS4 less so. Is that correct?

If you believe the pastebin rumour, but Kotaku & other recent rumblings suggest it was off-base.

I still refuse to believe this. Killing off that architecture and effectively the whole PS3 games library. Doesn't make sense, at all.

So PS4 is going to release only a few months at most before the next Xbox? Seeing as we have to wait for next year's E3 and MS is launching most likely in Nov 2013. Ok. They'll both be out for that holiday rush.

I dunno why but I'm more worried then excited about the next generation of consoles, outside of WiiU things I'm hearing about the next Xbox and Playstation consoles kind of concern me. E3 is going to be very interesting this year, especially if both these consoles come out next year.

It seems that getting out before Microsoft will do less for Sony than what it did for Microsoft by getting the 360 out before the PS3. Largely because I don't see Microsoft making the same mistakes with the next Xbox as Sony did with the PS3. I could be wrong but I don't see it.

I see. I can't see Sony wanting to let Microsoft outdo them in the tech front. I can see them making things easier for developers are using more off the shelf parts, but to outright get outpowered doesn't seem like a Sony thing to do.

where the hell does Sony get the money for R&D?

It makes perfect sense. Kill it while its still early. With later generations they can always go with x86 architecture and BC is than much easier.

PS3 CELL is very cheap, reliable and power efficient. At 28nm it would spend maybe less than 30W. Much bigger problem is 256MB of XDR.

Well I gues it could be included but still when you sell tens of millions consoles and there is pressure to drop the price from time to time it becomes a lot harder decision. Same reason as why PS2 GPU was dropped from PS3 after some time. It will also produce extra heat and when this gen consoles already had some major problems with cooling next gen the problems are just going to be bigger....

2013 did always make more sense. AMD everything is looking more likely as well.

Does anyone else find it hilariously ironic that MS, having entered the console market in order to kill Sony before they made a unifying STB-PC, has successfully managed to push Sony to PC architecture and a semiopen app store (assuming we get PSS?)

Here we go! Shit's going down.

Wii U is the early news item, shrouded in mystery and glazed in doubt, whilst elusive talks and showings of Durango pepper game journalism, with the odd comment on the inner workings of the system - will it be a little or a lot more powerful than nintendo's tablet based system?
And then there's Sony, who have struggled in recent years, allegedly dedicated to beat the XBOX out of the gate with a new system that as of yet know very little about - will they go down the power route and hedge their bets, or take a safer more conservative approach, to really heat up the competition this gen?

My thoughts? Things are gonna be close, here, Jeff!

Maybe two games total are going to use this feature.

Absolutely not. MS is much wiser and stronger company than Sony is (Sony of last 10 years).

where the hell does Sony get the money for R&D?

R&D shouldn't be that crazy expensive if you're not, I dont know, designing a brand new bespoke chip for the thing (aka Cell).

Pay AMD and maybe IBM some cash to slap something together. I dont get the impression for example, XB360 R&D ever broke the bank, and it even featured a custom GPU.

How down to the metal were they coding for this to be necessary.

Well, I guess that if you were assumimg you can do 24 threads, and are received with only 8 or so, a rewrite is in order.

It amazes me that people are still this clueless as to what was meant by the whole "10-year" thing.

You mean keep the support to minimum on the console and release the next one five to six years down the road? If that's the case, then I don't mind that.

The 45nm Cell is under 20W!

I think the bigger problem apart from the XDR, is they would have to re-engineer the chip to get it smaller than 45nm. I'd imagine that would be an expensive exercise just for BC.

Fuck MS, go Sony!!!!!

I'm going to take sides right now to maximize my fanboy rage/potential.

I'm just thinking how much both companies will spend on advertising these consoles when the time comes.

Weren't they just saying they weren't in a rush to get it out?

I'm sure they were but if we believe this rumour Sony must have been spooked by MS movements. And the potential now halted by MS that they could release this year.

Weren't they just saying they weren't in a rush to get it out?
And you believed them? GG and SSM have been hiring for next gen development for months now. They are not going to come out and say "Next year you will see new PS" and cannibalize their own sales.
