Yeah, I started it, commenting on that VGCATS episode.

They imply that next-gen graphics = dark, brownish enviroments, sharper image and bloom. I don't think it's a valid statement, and I don't see how anyone who has a next-gen console could agree with it.

They're implying that game developers/artists are currently taking the lazy way out and using these tricks to artificially improve graphics on their next-gen games. Nowhere is it implied that's all that next-gen systems can do, or whatever crazy idea has you so worked up.

Several people with next-gen systems laughed at the brown thing and commented on the overuse of shadow and bloom, so how does this become a Wiitard conspiracy rather than a comment on the current state of next-gen graphics?

Did you actually read my posts? Look at Kameo, RR7, Viva Pinata, PDZ, Blue Dragon. VGC author used generalization that doesn't work.
Just because realistic games get the most hype, doesn't mean that they're the only games.

It's a generalization that has been completely done to death--maybe would have been appropriate at the 360 launch--and isn't accurate anyway. Plus as usual the strip dragged on far too long.

The comic is dreadful, yes, but if you honestly get so offended at a harmless generalizations that you can't understand it's actually talking about a subset of popular next gen games you're being way oversensitive and should probably stop trying understand humor. There is no implication that EVERY game has the same graphical style, generalization or no. Should the artist have specified that he was talking about "realistic next gen games but not the cartoony looking ones like kameo or viva pinata lol?" No, because a reasonable person with an understanding of the English language understands this without being told.

And while there's more to hidef graphics than these tricks, there is an over-reliance. Too much bloom, for example. And is not exaggeration a common method used to derive humor? Again, I'm not saying this comic actually achieved any humor, but still...

I don't think anybody was "so offended," nor did they interpret it as a "treatise on next-gen graphical programming." All that happened is that they found it really unfunny and a poor observation. It's not even "exaggerated," it's just dumb.

some games look brown for a reason. some games look green for a reason.

its called color filtering and different colors give you a different feeling, just like in movies. video games are not excluded from utilizing effects that are used in films, they're all on a 2D screen anyway.

there's either too much text or just not enough material to make fun of. i look at this strip and there's literally... nothing. there's not even a hint of substance. there are no interesting facial expressions, there's nothing you can work with visually, there's no shitty over-the-top writing - it's completely empty. it's not even dumb enough to simply mock it. it's just bland, dull, boring and painfully humorless. and what about that awful non-plot? god.

if at least it was as unbearably stupid and full of needless violence and swearing and retarded characters as his older strips - you could take that and turn it into something else. but here - i mean, you can't turn nothing into something.

Absolutely agree. I don't own a PS3 or 360, but just because a game uses a lot of earthtones or subdued colors, that doesn't make said game "all brown." Hyper-saturated colors do not equal good color theory.

I feel sorry for you if you laughed at this comic. This exact point (overuse of bloom) has been made so many times over the last year or so by video game forum goers. It's outdated humor. And blood coming out of someone's eyes doesn't make something funny suddenly, yet VG Cats seems to use this kind of violent humor all the time. It's redundant and lame.
