Formatting is an important skill. Just like punhlines and art.
C&H looked like it did because Bill formatted the comic how he wanted it. He didn't do a retarded format that didn't allow you to see the entire page as a whole.
Yeah C&H would have been worse IF he changed his format.. Far Side would have been worse too if the jokes weren't funny..
Andrew Dice Clay would have made a lot money too if he had any talent...
Hitler might have won WWII if he didn't attack Russia in the winter..
the IF game is kind of fun to play
Actually, if you read the stuff he's written about dealing with newspapers and syndicates, you'd find that as far as his sunday strips were concerned, he had to make compromises, making the first two panels either a throwaway joke, or not necessary for the rest of the comic. That's in contrast with other sunday strips where he makes larger use of the space he's given (or takes), conflicting with newspapers that complained about the panel sizes, or the number of them.
This contrasts against the stuff he's done for the book releases, where he really let loose, giving him more space.
In other words, any or all complaints that GAF has ever had about the number of panels are just silly. Its a question of presentation, the use of space, the restrictions that one might place on him or herself (or lack thereof), and whether or not the joke delivers.
If the composition and the humor don't jive with you, then it doesn't, but that doesn't mean they're necessarily doing it wrong, especially with so many posters responding positively to this particular strip.
I could still do without the abortion joke, but the rest of it was pretty hilarious, in my opinion.
What I don't get is if so much of GAF hates VGcats, then why give it so much attention? Heck, even when the guy does a comic right (i.e. Super Effective and Adventure Log), GAF still hates on it.
In a way, this sort of redundancy in GAF's behavior mirrors that of when any given game comes out, or is announced, except this has no hype train, and is purely designed for half-assed photoshops.
