Well I finished season one today. All in all I'd say it's watchable. About 10% of the jokes are actually funny, which is a fair batting average for a show like this. I wasn't expecting to laugh at all so even one good joke is a plus for the show. The plots are completely predictable but inoffensive, they aren't really a problem. I wish they would have multi-episode story arcs though. It doesn't have to turn into The Wire but at least have some serialized element. I've been watching The Larry Sanders Show recently and while each episode is mostly self-contained, they have character beats and arcs that run through-out each season and the series. It's nothing major but it provides for some growth, I'd like to see something similar on Victorious. Hooking Tori up with someone for more than half an episode would be a very basic example. Anyway, for something aimed at teens it really isn't that bad. The occasional laugh
justify the shows existence.
Bullet point time.
- Tori: An okay lead. Hot. Perfectly watchable.
- Cat: Impossibly cute. Being hot and sweetly retarded is a winning combination. I can't believe they actually tried to pass Cat off as unattractive in the beginning of the show, making jokes about how she couldn't find a date to the prom and things like that. As weird and innocent as she is, there is no way she wouldn't be able to find a date. Thankfully they dropped that idea pretty quickly.
- Beck: Token hot guy. He's not annoying. Whatever.
- Jade: I'm kinda of cool on her character. Gillies can have as much screen time as she wants as far as I'm concerned, but the character itself isn't that exciting. Although she did seem to be getting even more dark and macabre near the end of the season, which provided some strange laughs.
- Robbie: Well it wouldn't be a comedy without at least one neurotic jew. He's fairly sympathetic and likable, but not so much that you don't enjoy watching him fail.
- Rex: I liked Rex at first because a lot of the better jokes were written for him but he declined over the course of the season. All he does now is spit out lame jabs at Robbie.
- Andre: Kind of boring. He doesn't handle the more absurd stuff very well. There was an episode where he was obsessed with being stung by a bee and he just never clicked with it. They play him straight most of the time and while he's adequate at that, it's not very endearing.
- Trina: Wonderfully desperate and dumb, usually good for a laugh. She doesn't get a lot of screen time but maybe it's better that way, I'm sure she'd become grating at some point. Also, Daniella Monet is some kind of fine. I didn't notice much before watching the show but damn.
- Sikowitz: Adult characters on these shows are usually really grating and Sikowitz borders on that sometimes, but is usually okay. Instead of the usual trope of having an adult who is dumb as rocks and always being proven wrong by the kids, Sikowitz is just quirky and weird. He's like an eccentric pedophile who isn't actually a pedophile.
- That Guidance Counselor Guy: I only list him because he creeps me out. I think it's his eyes. I genuinely don't like looking at him.
- Best Episode: Survival of the Hottest. Fairly funny and featured the entire cast in swimwear and sweaty. Half of Viper's gif collection is from this episode.
- Worst Episode: Sleepover at Sikowitz's. Almost unbearable, and what was with the subplot with Tori's parents? Just barf.
- Freak the Freak Out: Why was this episode an hour long, exactly? Just to premiere the new song? The plot really could have fit into a half hour episode easily.
- Shameful Admission: Some of this damn music got stuck in my head and I bought the soundtrack.
