Video game characters that don't deserve the hate

Vaan_%28Dissidia_012%29.png

He's certainly pointless and bland, but he never did anything that actively made me loathe him like Tidus or Lightning.

Vaan stole the fucking spotlight from Balthier being the protagonist in FFXII because Square wanted a protagonist that appealed to FF's demographic. They did the same shit with Ashley Riot in Vagrant Story. Fuck Vaan. He has little to no ounce of character development "OH I WANNA BE A SKY PIRATE" later near the end "I'm glad all of that shit went down and is over, CAN I STILL BE A SKY PIRATE?!" there's no fucking redeemable qualities about Vaan other than being eyecandy for a bunch of fangirls/boys.

I don't like Cloud, but I'll GLADLY take Cloud over Vaan. Fuck Vaan.

Korra

Cloud.
Everyone complaining about Cloud's character in Final Fantasy VII: AC needs to replay Final Fantasy VII again...

Poor guy. Forever haunted by his gameplay in SA1, even though he's been fine since then. Reminds me of how some people can't get over Sonic '06, actually.

Connor's the first character I thought of too. I don't think his case was helped much following in the footsteps of his far more charismatic father though.

And I kind of want to say Lightning. She's nothing special, although marginally better than the worst of the FF protags like Squall. But with that said, she represents so much that is wrong with SE that yeah, hate away.

So my other choice is Tidus. Guy has an absolute dirtball jerk of a father. He's got his share of issues, but they're not unfounded and he works through them by the end.

Ok, in the first game maybe it's justified hate, he did fuck things up pretty royally. But he redeemed himself in the second imo.

The amount of Final Fantasy characters showing up in this thread is telling, I'm not sure of what though.

Seems you can't please everyone after FF VII.

Raiden in MGS2 is a really well done character in my opinion.

I really despise what they did with him in later games. They basically took all the ideas and themes that went with him and threw them out the window to make him "cool".

No. Fuck Cole Phelps. Asshole.

Being an asshole doesn't make someone an objectively bad character. It sucks that seemingly only video game characters get this kind of stigma. Walter White is an asshole, Don Draper is an asshole, Daniel Plainview is an asshole, but they are all terrific characters. It bothers me that totally generic characters like Sam Fisher in Blacklist don't get hated on, or fuckin any number of generic military dudes like Sev from Killzone, but instead characters that have depth or display emotion get hated because "lol why's he such a dick." We need more video game protagonists that are imperfect.

connor's problem IMO was that he was a Boring Character. He also made alot of dumb choices in the game that made me personally think "why am i playing this guy as the lead in the game if this is what he is going to do and this is how he is going to act" I never really felt invested in his story because his attitude and character was shit (again IMO).

Her speech quirk of "kay?" was a localization decision and a bad one at that. It's like when they were replacing "dattebayo" for naruto and put in "Believe it!".
What she actually says in Japanese is "na no yo" which is much less annoying in the context of the Japanese language.

What they should of done and what they usually do today is they either give the character an accent (southern, etc.) or just leave the quirk out altogether.

Sheva from RE5.

Granted, people tend to hate her because of her AI than as a character, but still.

The most common complaint about her is that "SHE ONLY EVER USES HER PISTOL WTF DUMBASS". After the first level of RE5 when I came to that same conclusion, you know what I did? Took the damn pistol out of her inventory. There, problem solved, nightmare over. After that she was equipped with only an assault rifle or SMG and a sniper rifle, and she was perfectly fine; she knew when to use each weapon in a given situation, didn't waste ammo, and was a freaking crack-shot too.

Yeah, she still pretty moronic when it came to the use of healing items, but overall I never once had a frustrating game-ruining experience with her as many apparently have.

RE5's AI only becomes unworkable on Professional, at which point its flaws are readily apparent. I don't see how it's even possible to beat Professional singleplayer without using upgraded guns and/or the infinite ammo cheat. I'm sure many have done it by now, though.

But yeah, if you're complaining about the AI on normal, you're probably doing something wrong. Veteran takes a bit of babysitting and micromanagement but the AI isn't there to kill everything for you. It gives the feeling that you actually have to watch out for your partner and vice versa, you feel much more vulnerable when you're separated.

I think I prefer the RE5 method over the Revelations/RE6 methods for handling AI companions. In RE5 you had to pay attention to your ally's inventory and protect them, but they could be very effective in fights. In the others they are little more than just distractions for the enemies but you don't need to worry about them.

I'm not saying he's a bad character at all (although that could be argued). He's not even the engaging kind of asshole. He's just unlikable.

You mean the "I wanna be a skypirate" asshole who shouldn't have been the protagonist in the first place?

Sorry bro, but this piece of shit of a character has no place in this thread.

Squall Leonhart.

He's a teenager who was raised in a military school. He doesn't have parents or any family. He was orphaned after the sorceress war which is what caused him to be taken into Garden. He's fairly calm and nice to his friend's unlike what most people suggest.

He is one of the best FF protagonists who develops throughout the game.

In what way does she not deserve the hate. In fact, simply posting her picture with zero words defending her makes me hate her more.

The FUCK is she wearing? Why does nothing she say sound like something I can imagine a person saying? Where am I?
She doesn't deserve the hate because there's a reason she's acting the way she does. She's been put in an awful position and has done things she regrets.

As for clothing, she's from
a period of time way before when XIII takes place. Her outfit is meant to resemble a tribal look hence the fur and beads.
She looks great.

I'll probably sound like a super weirdo, but I actually enjoyed having Ashley Graham around in Resident Evil 4. I played well enough that she was only ever really in trouble a few times. And I'll bet there was some sort of psychological principal about it... Like, the moment there was somebody to protect, I was far less intimidated by the enemies coming at me. It's weird how I preferred to have a character tagging along with me, even if she wasn't actually helping.

Vaan stole the fucking spotlight from Balthier being the protagonist in FFXII because Square wanted a protagonist that appealed to FF's demographic. I don't like Cloud, but I'll GLADLY take Cloud over Vaan. Fuck Vaan.

I thought the soldier dude was supposed to be the main character before Matsuno left and it fell apart. Vaan is largely forgettable, like everything else in FF12.

How did he steal anything from Balthier? Balthier was easily far more important that Vaan. In fact, everyone was except maybe Penelo. I agree, he is bland and not developed at all, and he is easily my least favorite part about XII. But its just the seething hatred that people have for him that surprises me, when he was so unimportant and didn't even say much of anything half the time.

Connor had emotions?

connor2u9kaf.jpg

I wasn't bothered by his flaws or naivety, but just by how boring he was

Funny that a character can somehow both be criticized for being a "dick" or being "too emo", while somehow also having this stigma of having no emotion. That doesn't make any sense. Connor is calm and stoic, it doesn't mean he's devoid of emotion.

You have to keep in mind also that for Connor English is a second language. It's natural that he would be very direct and deliberate with his words, also being a Native American, you'd would learn to speak English very proper. Being a second language and being taught to speak English a certain way doesn't leave you much room to inject much "flair" into your words. I think the actor did a really good job.

Vanille.
There is two reason why she doesn't deserv the hate:
1.She can be annoying at times, but after you hear her backstory, it make alot of sense. I liked that she always was happy.
2.
I want to fuck her real hard! Lightning too. I'm a perv :(

I agree with Connor, he wasn't nearly as likeable as Ezio, Altair, or even Haythem, but that was kinda the point. He was trying to fit in to a culture that he didn't understand, and that didn't understand him. He was driven by hatred and revenge, he didn't really give two shits about the order of assassins, it was just a means to an end for him.

Not all of Sonic's friends are shitty. Were a "purge" of the series ever to happen, there's a couple I wouldn't mind seeing stick around beyond the obvious Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles: Blaze, Shadow, Amy, and I guess Big since people seem to like him for whatever reason.

700+ Pokemon, I don't see why they can't have a little fun with them.
You, I like. I loved the Vanillite line from day one.
