Videogamer issues apology over Uncharted 4 review

I get where they are coming from, I'm sure some Videogamer regulars were mad at the 8/10 which is dumb.

Can't say this response was necessary at all though and didn't find it funny even if it's tongue in cheek, but that's just me.

I'm sure if you looked into their Twitter inbox you'd sing a different song. This kind of criticism of the gaming public needs to get out there. Or we just roll over and accept our toxic community.

Fair enough. I thought the IGN reviewer was unfairly targeted while Videogamer and Gamesrader were largely ignored ( may be have targeted by a few people but that happens with almost any slightly low review for a hyped game) .

I can imagine people being pissed at the 8/10 shitting the metacritic.
Metacritic is important. Reviewers have to take it seriously.
It's like the only objective argument you can bring into system / title wars, it's the only thing that can validate your opinion, it's unquestionable.
Secretly (or openly) dislike the game as much as you want in the body of your review, but when you type a score at the bottom of your piece you have to think of the consequences.

Seriously though, yeah I get where they are coming from, but i am not sure the "outrage" was even enough to warrant this. Actually they shouldn't even have to justify the score to a few fanboys; because this is what this ends up sounding like.

wait

did people seriously flip out again over an uncharted game getting a not perfect score?
Not really, but there certainly is a big move of creating that narrative anyway.

And with the millions of people buying the game you can easily find a lot of dumb arguments in any way you want.

Very big of them to put their ego aside and admit when you're wrong

The amount of people not getting this is great.

These threads/articles are great for finding those with a sense of humor and those without.

That first post is Gold. Beautifully written.

Excellent apology. It's unbelievable that a critic can get away with not rating a highly anticipated game a 10/10. Justice is done now that videogamer has listened to thousands of fans who...haven't played the game yet, but nevertheless know its quality more so than videogamer.

I haven't read all the comments, but there's always something to learn from criticism. Even more so if it comes from those who pay your groceries.

Especially someone who makes a living from criticizing other people's work, should be able to take it as much as dishing it. Which is something in which many reviewers seem to be lacking nowadays.

Something like this, besides being clickbait, mocks said criticism in a rather thinly veiled attempt to pass the idea that their reviews shouldn't be criticized because they're "muh opinion!". Which is rather silly to me.

I don't think the intent of this piece is to say that reviews should be immune from criticism. Rather, it's to say that the kind of user criticism it describes is bad criticism. People complaining that a review reflects the reviewer's personal opinion have a totally misguided approach to what reviews should be. Unless you think game reviews should just be another marketing arm of publishers.

I get the whole philosophy of "Don't bite the hand that feeds you", but if you take that to an extreme you'd get the whole games industry kowtowing to Gamergate nuts.

Even though we have punished Steve by beating him with sticks and making him play Uncharted 3 again, he still found the strength to ask that you please accept his sincere apologies..

ouch

to be fair the reviewer does think Kane and Lynch 2 is one of the best games ever, so questioning his judgement....not unreasonable ;)

satire
ˈsatʌɪə/Submit
noun
the use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues (like extremely important game reviews and the like).

Video games are serious business.

Wait do you actually think it was supposed to be? I thought you were some master-level satirist but now I.....wow.

I played into it a little too hard and ruined the joke.

A lot of hopes crushed at the entrance in this thread.

How is that funny? This is not serious journalism! I want a real apology, damn it! This is why the world is dying, because of Steve.

I find it weird that people keep bringing up IGN. The issue with IGN is that they are implying that there's something precise/objective about their score when giving 8.8. That the opposite of what Videogamer is saying. I'm on Videogamer's side in this case.

The amount of people not getting this is great.
Saw a couple people point out this message as if it flew over Viewtiful's head, and was going to mention they read it back carefully, but I see others have done so already lol.

Don't recall any outrage on Twitter or even here. Only people contesting reasons described as negatives for IGN and Jim that didn't make much sense regardless of their scores, as well as how Sterling was insulting his fanbase. I guess YouTube probably has some nasty comments but isn't that just normal YouTube comment hell? :P

It's fine if they don't like it. It's not fine if they are accusing people of an agenda because they don't like it. They are literally attacking their integrity because they like a game they haven't played yet.

A lot of the comments I saw accused the reviewer of bias, which is by no means an unearthly accusation (considering that pretty much everyone in this world is biased).

The bottomline is that when you post something publicly, and people criticize it, whatever the reason, it's in their right, because it's their take away from what you wrote.

A fake "apology" like this simply scream "I, big reviewer, am entitled to my opinion, but you, lowly reader peon, aren't!"

It isn't even a matter of not biting the hand that feeds you. It's a matter that if you make a living by dishing criticism, you should learn to take it. Bad or good, it doesn't matter. It's their opinion just as much as you have yours on other people's work, and have no trouble expressing it on media that influences those people's livelihood.

If taking in that criticism brings up something useful, you learn from it, and it makes you a better writer. If it doesn't, then you just move on, instead of going on the offensive and mocking your readers. Those people have a viewpoint different than yours, and that's fine.

There's no need to "kowtow" to anything. Learning to take criticism in stride does not mean bending to it.

This does not sound legit at all

They are more like:
"Sorry for making a true review, we should have went in blind with the hype and called it a masterpiece right out of the gate".

This site is trying way too hard to get clicks. There's no outrage of their Uncharted 4 review besides some idiots on YouTube. Then they do the whole "5 reasons why ROTR is better than Uncharted 4", and now this. Yeah they're trying way too hard.

Amazing. I would say we need to remove anonymity from the internet completely so we can reduce the amount of shit we have to sift through, but twitter and facebook kinda prove humanity is just garbage. People are so inesecure about their own experience that they feel threatened by other opinions. It's crazy.

GWC's mock review of U4 with the SDF coming for him at the end was also perfect.

1) You have no idea how much shit they've been getting, great or small.
2) The point still stands even if it was minor. You only have to look at this very forum to see the fucking whambulances.
3) It's light-hearted satire. Deal with it.
