Vikings - Season 2 - Thursdays on History

Check the wikipedia article here - there are many theories about the nickname but the one they're going with seems to be the brittle bone disease one.

You think they are going that route or just this one? Alternatively, the English word "bone" is cognate with the German word "Bein", meaning "leg". Scandinavian sources mention Ivar the Boneless as being borne on a shield by his warriors. Some have speculated that this was because he could not walk and perhaps his epithet simply meant "legless"—perhaps literally or perhaps simply because he was lame. Other sources from this period, however, mention chieftains being carried on the shields of enemies after victory, not because of any infirmity.

The music during the getting-the-ships-ready-to-depart-montage was absolutely fantastic.
That whole scene was great. Loved the high shot of Floki and his woman in the field, too. As they pointed out in the Onion review, there wasn't as much plot movement this week, but they still nailed a few scenes.

Pretty much. It was a slow ep, but still a good one. Enjoyed it, though I can't say I'm really seeing where the plot is going now. This season has been great, but it's been a constant repetition of betrayal, raiding, betrayal, raiding, with Ragnar getting two weird sons in the mean time.

Also, WTF happened to Bjorn's wounds after that fight scene between him and Rollo? They were gone in the very next scene...

It was odd, but I'm pretty sure it was just some visual representation of what the wounds would have looked like ... I could be terribly wrong, but it seems like that was the point that was being made ...

Ragnar biting Ivar's umbilical cord was more cringe worthy than last weeks Blood Eagle to me

Horik has to die in these next few episodes for the story to advance

I found an extended (and low quality) version of that scene - clic - where we see at the end that the damage Bjorn was dealt by Rollo was just in his imagination.

I wasn't really clear what happened in the final scene, or rather its motivations. So we have Horik's son attacking the King's son and his envoy as they leave. But I couldn't tell what that did since he neither captured or killed him, and I don't know if either Ragnar or Horik were in on this plan. The scene was really strange to me to end on.

I took it as setting a trap for Ragnar when he "turns himself in" by visiting Eckbert later only to realize that Eckbert will be looking for vengeance for what the vikings did to his son's men.

Yeah, I guess that makes the most sense, and Horik is likely in on it. But then I'd think Eckbert would be really wondering why Ragnar would show up at all. Guess we shall see. This show is great, anyways!

I certainly hope that is the case. Ragnar finds out I'm sure but then Lagertha would surely find out as well. Can't see her taking too kindly to that after the fallout from the first 3-way argument about equality.

I think it was nothing more than Horik sending a message that he is not so willing to trust the Anglo-Saxons like Ragnar. King Egbert isn't going to care much about a few dead soldiers, even if his son's life was threatened.

I think Horik did it because he wants a war, he doesn't want to talk it out. He let the King's son live because they needed a witness.

I'm kind of iffy about Princess Kwenthrith. The idea of a hypersexual character with a childhood rape backstory seems kind of gross. The show kind of suggests that she has such an intense sex drive because she was "broken" at a young age.

There's absolutely zero clues about such thing.

All we know is that: a) she was raped at a young age; and b) she largely enjoys the D.

Ragnar has been a major asshole most of this season too. Are people still rooting for him?

What has he done besides ditch Lagetha? He spared Rollo when he should have killed him, and he got revenge on Borg for threatening his people. Besides that he cares about Athlestan and is putting up with Horik's bullshit.
He got 4 sons out of the switch, which is a big deal for them

I'm still a week behind on this show. But god damn Blood Eagle was the most amazing episodes of television I have ever seen. The most brutal torture scene ever shot and they didn't even show anything graphic. Amazing.

I'm kind of hoping the event alluded to in next week's episode isn't the obvious one.
Hoping Floki pulls the double agent and betrays the King.

That was probably the best episode of the entire series.

Also LOL at that one Queen when she was checking out Ragnar/the Vikings.

She may be my new favorite Character on the show. She's replaced Floki as the comic relief. In a good way.

I could see Aethelstan giving his life to save Ragnar

I dislike what they've done to Floki, it makes no sense. Hopefully him and Horik die soon enough. Sometimes I wish Ragnar wasn't so diplomatic, by viking-standards anyway, otherwise Horik wouldn't be standing around anymore. :p

fuck I was so worried that Rollo and Ragnar were going to die and then have Bjorn become the main character
and please I hoped Floki is a double agent so they can find out what Horik is doing and plan accordingly

Don't like what they have done with Floki. He was a favorite of mine in season 1, now I findd myself withing he'd catch a stray axe. I hope it's all a ruse to play Horik (why I don't know) but scenes where he is interacting with his wife make me doubt. His turn was so sudden I wonder if they had contractual disagreements with the actor or something.

I have yet to catch with the episode, but Floki has always been a slimy little turd. I'm surprised people are starting to develop "feelings" for him now that he's being a dick to Ragnar as opposed to... everybody else, really.

He's a dick.

Yeah. I never got the whole fascination with Floki. He's literally an insane religious extremist. He's exactly the same character Brendan Gleeson played in Kingdom Of Heaven.

And he's terribly acted.

If Floki hasn't been working with Ragnar this whole time, I will be surprised.

His character turn makes no sense otherwise

He's always been a cunt to Athlestein, but his heel turn on Ragnar makes little sense. If he makes a move on Bjoern it will make even less sense as those two always seemed to have a good relationship. I guess we'll see.

Great episode this week. I am a little bummed that Athelstan decided to go back with with the vikings though, even if I understand why he did it. I never found him to be a very interesting character when he was with the vikings, and I thought that pairing him with King Ecgbert was the best thing they'd ever done with his character.

It was also nice to see Aslaug finally coming around. She's accepted Lagertha with open arms and she even freed Bjorn's girlfriend! She is Princess Asshole no more!

Also, major season 3 spoiler from an interview with show creator Michael Hirst.

But I do know that in Season 3, we attack Paris! And Jesus Christ that'll be a huge thing!

Princess Maneater was probably scaring the shit out of him.

That battle scene was massive! Holy shit! I had gotten called for that battle but was unavailable. I hear it was the most grueling of the lot to shoot. If you remember, it was the time Katheryn's horse had stood on her foot.

I actually enjoyed that episode a lot more than I was expecting. The whole Floki thing has to be a big season finale twist... right?

Right?

I wanna go back and talk about that scene between King Eckbert and Athelwhathisface discussing the Romans, am I the only one that thought that the scene couldn't have been historically possible? What I mean is how could anyone not know of the Romans or believe their works to be that of a race "giants?" Roman presence was quite strong in Britain and their forts and weaponry would have remained long after the fall of Rome, and considering the British tribes eventually rose up and defeated them (or Romans simply renounced allegiance to Rome) I find it hard to believe anyone would forget who they were. Also, Athelwhathisface also makes the comment that "they worshiped false gods" which also makes no sense. At the end of the Roman Empire Christianity was the official state religion and it was the Romans that established the Catholic Church they all follow.

I just found the whole scene strange and meant to further hammer home to the audience the popular image and somewhat disputed view that we are in the "DARK AGES."

Right?

I've never actually talked to someone in a show before but you have to know the answer to this. Right? But probably not allowed to speak about it?
