Vikings - Season 3 - Thursdays on History

Floki's character has been consistent, but what hasn't helped him is the S2 storyline of 'is he/isn't he' a traitor, going straight into S3's increased hatred for Athelstan/Christians. That'll do a number on any character, no matter how originally likeable they were.

Gonna miss Athelstan, but I hope we don't end up with the rest of the season being Ragnar adopting Christianity and everyone else questioning him/plotting against him for it. He just got the crown, just give it one season without more civil war drama. Let's go kill some Frenchmen instead!

Whoa what the hell. Was not expecting any of this. Damn.

R.I.P. Athelstan

4S7Apf1.gif

YES. lol

That was so...random.

Holy shit, them screams. I thought they were about to crucify her, but losing an ear like that. Damn. Nooooo, don't die
Athelstan
! And holy hell at Ragnar wearing the
holy cross necklace,
lots of people aren't going to like that.

At the end, I got the impression Ragnar was dressing up as a Priest to probably stakeout Paris or go back to Wessex?

Maybe I'm expecting too much from these Vikings, but I was totally disappointed by Bjorn hooking up with that Earl's wife...

Kinda destroyed his character for me a bit. Thought his wife and him would have a Ragnar - Lagertha type relationship (before Ragnar fucked up)

I feel it totally goes against how the show wanted to depict Bjorn, especially when he was a kid.

Yo, she told him to.

Months without sex + wife's consent + different cultural morality = not a big deal.

So, I started a rewatch of the show on Netflix.

Holy shit, there's blood!

Holy shit, there's color!

Seems strange to watch this show without it being drenched in blue.

I'm enjoying this season a lot more than last.

You're right. What if the "princess" plays a role in Ragnar's death, inadvertently leading to Bjorn becoming king and Rollo becoming Earl of somewhere (this ties in with the greatness the seer also spoke of). Wild speculation, but you never know.

I believe in reality Rollo conquered Normandy and was ancestor to William the Conqueror. But also I don't believe he was brother to Ragnar in reality.

Yeah I spent a few hours on Wikipedia reading about Viking raids last weekend. It's interesting to note that King Horik was still alive at the time of Ragnar's raid on Paris because he sacks Hamburg later in the same year.

Yeah, I read about this afterwards. Rollo was the first Duke of Normandy; he was gifted the land after the failed Paris raids.

New episode tonight!

Paris

The populace of Paris is in a panic after the appearance of the Viking fleet, and Emperor Charles, at the behest of his daughter, announces he'll remain in the city.

Historical concerns aside, I find it hard to believe that the folks making the show would have any intention of killing Ragnar and continuing the show. Travis Fimmel's performance as Ragnar is the core that the rest of the show functions around, and without that it just wouldn't work.

To put it in perspective, his children will be around adult age by the time that he dies. So, quite a bit of show left before that happens.

Ep 7

Alright episode, seems like Ragnar has already clocked Floki as Athelstan killer. Nicely setup for the raid but they built a lot towers pretty quick didn't they?

As time goes on, I love King Eckbert more and more. The man is pure unabashed Snake. "Not my friend. I don't have any friends". Magnificent.

Production values were through the roof this last episode. The viking boats, Paris itself, and Loki's flotilla towers all looked splendid.

This season has really done a good job of world building. We're now getting stories in Wessex, Scandinavia, and Paris. And they've done good at differentiating the looks of the characters from each kingdom.

I actually wasn't too impressed with this episode.

The Paris scenes with the new characters dragged and were predictable, Aethelwulf edging more and more into the spotlight is worrying (such a one-note, boring character), and all of the English scenes seem lacking without direct Viking involvement. I do enjoy Ecbert's slithering around, though.

Ragnar definitely seems like a much changed man - very pensive. I'll be interested to see how he opens up during the raid itself and afterwards.

The last shot was pretty bad, CG-wise, but all the stuff that came before was great - shots of Paris, Floki's towers, the amazing moonlit shot of Ragnar ascending the hill and surveying the city. The streets of Paris was clearly a set, unconvincingly redressed at least once to seem like somewhere else.

Funnily enough I didn't mind Aslaug this time around. She could be a much more interesting character if that advice-giving, caring mother side of her was given more focus. There was a hint of it in last week's episode too with the whole "And you will love it just the same!" in response to Þórunn's worries that her child would be weak and deformed. Here's to more of that as the show progresses.

For once, the A.V. Club review sums up my thoughts quite well.

40 minutes passed and barely anything happened. I don't know what's going on with this show this season. Anyway...

Remember when this happened?

Rollo should share his scar-healing secrets with Porunn, lol. BTW, pretty strange to see a female Viking warrior get all depressed due to some scars on her face.

I was initially thinking that too, but the most recent exchange with Aslaug pointed to: "I'm worried that I'm going to be a shitty parent and I'm going to use these scars as an excuse to be all sad about it.", which she got called out on.

I really need to post in this thread more. *sigh*

It's not the scars but what they represent, she believes she's weak now, not good enough to be shield maiden, not good enough to be a wife, and not good enough to be a mother.

Episode needed more Ragnar. Too much time spent on the non-Viking groups for my taste. Especially since neither was particularly entertaining this week. Looking forward to next week though!

Yes, this has been a major issue this season. S1 and S2 were all about dat Ragnar, very focused.

Ok yeah that was intense, really impressive what they accomplished with a modest budget compared to other huge battles on premium networks (Game of Thrones Blackwater/Wall battles for instance).

The zooming out during the battle to show the entire water invasion was impressive
I really thought Bjorn have traveled Valhalla
Nice to see the core Four are still there

But that preview though...

Well damn, I'd say that definitely lived up to the hype!

I really thought Bjorn have traveled Valhalla

I did too. I feel like their defeat would have been greater felt if one of the more prominent characters had died, so on one hand I was a bit bummed that Bjorn survived, but on the other I was glad because Bjorn is a cool character and his story is obviously far from over.

I don't know how Rollo became my second favorite character but it somehow happened.

It probably has something to do with that sick beard of his.

I would have thought Floki would have died. Slicing his throat during the buring tower seems like a good shot to do it

Ragnar losing his mind. Doing all that just to teach Floki a lesson.

Yeah, that's what stood out to me the most. He was willing to throw away all those men (and possibly Bjorn/himself) just to prove that Floki was a moron. I get that he wants to punish him for as long as he can, but that's reaching pretty high levels of crazy.

I mean, he's obviously all there mentally. He's just willing to risk everything to prove a point. Weird. And was he coughing up blood because of internal injuries from the fall?

It's kind of weird how the next ep preview shows
another attack on Paris
, considering how it looks like an incredibly large portion of the viking force was killed.

Yeah he has definitely injured his lungs.

Whoa Intense episode. Loved it.

Damn that took a turn I didn't expect. Kind of disappointed Bjorn didn't die. That would have been a crazy shocker.

Eat shit Floki. That was so great.

And I'd risk Lagertha killing me too.

Watching alone..I literally said aloud, nodding my head in approval, "Eh, thats a fair deal. I'm down."

Ragnar is clearly a mad genius.

Some of the best characterization in television. Having power has changed Ragnar's very being, I love it.

It's solid. He's gone from not really wanting a position of power to accepting it and manipulating things like a ruler does. He's really only been outsmarted by Egbert at this point, I think.

I was trying to get my mate to start watching Vikings. Travis Fimmel is brilliant as Ragner, he is probably my fave actor in a TV series.

I would have accepted Lagertha's offer even if she said she'd kill me directly after we got our grooves on. Hot damn.

Also, why did Rolo just sink into the water with a blank expression on his face?
