Violent standoff between Cops and Protesters in Baltimore

I understand poverty in dense populations is a main cause which is what I stated in post he quoted me in. Him stating that police ignore white crime as the reason why violent crime is so distortionate is absolutely asinine.

What he said about ignoring white crime was asinine. I agree. But yes, as you've acknowledged there are socioeconomic reasons for the prevalence of black crime.

People are just on edge at the moment.

Well, there are dense white poverty areas. It's not -just- poverty, it's also systemic oppression.

There are obviously many fact that weigh in on this issue. I don't think it's because of skin color. That would also be asinine. Not that many would believe me on here, but I have never made a traffic stop based on a person's color. I work nights and can't even tell what race, gender, age of the person I am behind when I stop them. Same goes for other interactions before I am attacked for that.

Some, including me, would argue that your interactions with specific races are affected by unconscious biases that, by definition, you wouldn't be aware of until you were educated on them.

During any training were you taught about unconscious bias?

Edit: Please know that I don't mean to offend. I'm not a cop so I have zero relative experience, even if I don't trust yall right now.

Clarifying isn't apologizing, mayor.

Ahahaha, she knows she done fucked up. The constituency her "thug" comments would most resonate with wouldnt even vote democrat.

Agreed.

Even then, thing is, that part of his reply was like, maybe 5% of it. But the other 95% of his reply, and especially the last like five minutes of it? That part he spent telling it like it is and telling everyone just how apathetic the country is about something that has been going on forever? The part where Obama got real?

I can bet without looking that it got MAYBE 2 seconds of airtime since its initial showing and NO ONE is bringing that up. Hardly anyone is going to ask Carl Stokes if he agrees. No one is going to put that out there on these news channels, not over that "riot footage" and using Stokes to try to make some backhanded statement about the word thug and who shouldn't use it.

Because then they'd have to ask some real questions, and they can't hide behind Obama to justify the vilifying they like to do.

I'm still extremely heated at how they are framing that whole thing, how they're turning that inside out, with that headline of "Senator says Obama might as well have called them the N-word"... it's so fucking disgusting.

/rant

CNN is just another news thug and they don't care.

Yea it's a bit frustrating. The framing is so blatant i can't help but notice the bull. Especially when it's a serious ongoing issue in our country. Their drive for ratings is like AnchorMan 2 levels of crazy sometimes, imo.

We need to stop this. If you're a decent human, you're a decent human. Just because you're a cop, doesn't mean you're a bad person. Or racist. Wanting police to be held accountable for killing citizens doesn't immediately mean ALL COPS ARE BAD. Having that opinion doesn't mean you don't have common sense enough to know that its literally, not every single officer. However, there is a significant amount of racists, and bad people, that are also police. The problem comes when good people like yourself, can't speak out against it without being targeted by the PD.

You're a decent person, so you're not the reckless jackasses that are going around killing people, and taxing brown neighborhoods with tickets and bench warrants. The DOJ investigates, and we see the data. When I say fuck cops, I'm not considering my father. Because he was one of the good ones. When he says "the justice system needs a re haul" he isn't considering that he was part of the problem, and in need to defend its current entirely broken state, which he says now as a Judge.

It's not like people weren't supplying a boatload of ammo though.

And now he's banned. Funny how that works.

This is good. Now hopefully all these people will vote next midterms.

I don't think that was abuse, but I ain't trying to argue it.

It even bothered me when black people started sharing it. LOL isn't this hilarious, when no, it's just a mother trying to get her son off the street. I've laughed at stuff from the internet before but that didn't even get a chuckle, the context is obvious, and I don't get laughs from people trying to discipline their children. (which is an argument for being it being abuse, when so many people seem to take enjoyment out of it)

And then the news had to pick it up.

Seemed like a natural reaction from a concerned parent to me.

Hopefully their vote will amount to anything and wont be outnumbered by the other people in this country who don't give a fuck about any of this

Sorry to be cynical, but even if they vote why would it matter? The party that represents the poor and impoverished (i.e. democrats) is just as corrupt and out for themselves as anyone else. Baltimore in particular, but also Detroit and Memphis have had democrats in power for years and things have only gotten worse. Im sure someone can and will dispute me as to the reasons why, but they've had an opportunity to change things, and it sure seems like they haven't.

Don't worry, voter ID laws will make sure it works out against them.

lets not get started on the gerrymandering tactics either.

can't even disagree.

I don't believe I have ever been trained in unconscious bias.

What's the demographic of the neighborhoods you conduct traffic stops in?

93% white with a heavy Hispanic population in a neighboring town. There is also a major highway going through our town. The highway connects cities with a very high minority population so despite the 93% white there is a very good mixture because of spilloff from highway.

Our department is very progressive and we actually receive quite a bit of training. If our traffic stops are too high of a percentage of a certain race based on our population then all our stops are reviewed.

So hypothetically lets assume that we have two towns. One being mostly black and the other being mostly white. Lets say that one precinct polices both towns. Now imagine if the precinct decided to put two patrol cars in the mostly white town to conduct traffic stops and 15 patrol cars in the mostly black town. What do you think the majority of the demographic receiving citations and getting arrested as a result of traffic is going to look like? This is how the american police force operates. It doesn't matter if you yourself is a good cop the problem is systematic and trinkles down to the individual cops due to a shitty culture. It doesn't happen the other way around. If you over police black neighborhoods they are definitely going to take up a huge part of the crime statistics. In addition to that this intertwines with poverty which is out of control in black neighborhoods.

It's amusing people are trying really really hard to insinuate minx88 is stupid and racist just because he is a LEO.

It's hard to fight against small minds when you're displaying evidence of yours.

Funny because I don't work for that department. Different departments can selection their officers in different ways. I was actually in the top 1% of scored based on the written test and was number #1 on the final list. Hundreds took the test. Keep trying buddy.

It seems I struck a nerve.

Listen, IQ goes farther than how well you can take a test, and honestly IQ doesn't account for all of human intelligence and, more often than not, it's an ethnocentric evaluation of your smarts. It's not the end all and be all of how smart someone is.

That said, how well you take a test has no bearing on whether you have critical thinking skills. I'd rather my cops be able to critically think than be able to take tests well. It's one thing to know policy, it's another to respond to a volatile and unpredictable situation with an unarmed individual without killing anyone.

Well obviously if the vast majority of patrol cars are in one demographic area then traffic stops would reflect that demographic. But departments are also going to place more patrol cars where more calls for service are. If one area has more reports of drug activity, robbery, homicide, domestics, etc (calls that require immediate responses... then shouldn't there be more cars in that area to get to the calls as quickly as possible to handle those calls?

I've been thinking the same since the personal insinuations about them started. Esms seems to be especially scummy about it. That's as concerted an attempt to make the conversation about a person and not the topic as I've seen recently.

That doesn't betray my point.

The question is why do you think this is so. Before you sort of said because black people commit more crimes and the answer to that is much more nuanced than that terrible conclusion.

:lol Don't play coy now.

I'm not. Who went out of their way to call him stupid and racist? This is a big problem with discussions on topics like this; we can't separate talking about the individual practices from systemic ones. If you say that the police have racist policies that isn't saying every cop is a racist. If you say the police tend to higher people of low IQs that isn't to say every cop is dumb.

Totally, I'm by far the scummiest thing that's happened to this thread. You're on point today.

If pointing out that federal courts have ruled that departments can discriminate against those with high IQs in the hiring process and that I would like the officers who police this nation to be able to think on their toes, not only in the best interest of themselves, but the suspects and public as well makes me scummy, then I don't know what to tell you.

You've gone from coy to obtuse if you're pretending that a conversation started to tell an individual their IQ must be low because of their career isn't questioning their intelligence. This wasn't using statistics to help inform the topic.

Maybe we can get back on track. Let's keep it civil. Aside from D.C. and NYC, anyone have footage of protests outside of Baltimore?

Yes, let's pretend these posts aren't calling him a dummy:

This is a really disappointing lack of critical thinking from a cop.

Not really, he's demonstrating exactly why police precincts don't hire people with high IQs.

Never said that, I just said there is a reason officers don't hire people with high IQs. I mean I could totally be saying you have an average IQ.

Oh? This is how the conversation went that sparked the IQ topic.

The links you posted still don't explain why violent crime like homicide and robbery would be 50% committed by black while making up only 13% of the population. Cops don't discover violent crimes and homicide by stop and frisk or traffic stops. Those are reported crimes by witnesses, victims, suspects.

This is a really disappointing lack of critical thinking from a cop.

Dude wasn't called a dumb dumb. He was indeed rightfully called out for saying something dumb however.

Pretty much. There's a deluded group of people here who seem to have barricaded their thoughts into a narrow box of ignorance.

I don't think all cops are bad, but I think the ones that stand by and let the bad ones murder/beat/abuse/assault people and get away with it are pussies and deserve some of the hate they get.

If you know that shit is happening in your town, do your job and uphold the fucking law. A badge shouldn't be a shield against it's own rules.

A lot of people are agitated and for good reason. Many aren't speaking from ignorance but from frustration.

Are those statements regarding Freddie true?

In that he had a criminal record and he ran from police? Yes.

However he was not charged with any crime and as far as I know he wasn't holding or doing any illegal activities at that time.

It's the height of irrelevance to bring up Freddies criminal background. He had done his time.

Burn down the city every year? What a load of fucking garbage. Why even post that bullshit here?
If I was being pessimistic I would say they're "just asking questions" in big fucking exaggerated quotes.

You can ask this question without sharing racist garbage.

I like to be optimistic though. A position afforded to me because of my privilege.
