Even as a kid I've never understood the cult of statues and paintings. Yes, it depicts the deity, but it's simply a work of art and nothing more. It's not holy or sacred. You should be prying to the God/Jesus (who, as we were taught, is everywhere and can listen to us all the time), not to a statue or an icon.

Anyone else surprised that vertically extended mirrored patterns might sometimes look like they outline people? We are symmetric, after all.

As a Christian, the thing I don't understand is it is documented in the Bible that Jesus had brothers, which means Mary was not a virgin for the majority of her life (there is nothing to indicate additional immaculate conceptions). Seeing pictures like this and reading of people's reactions, it makes me sad. These people are obviously in pain, and they are looking for spiritual comfort, but you're better off pouring into God's written word than flocking to a misshapen tree.

I have seen trees that look like pretty much everyone, if you're telling me a tree looks like something I better fucking think it's the god damn living flesh and blood virgin mary otherwise I'm gonna slap your shit so hard you see right for once

Coming to that kind of rash conclusion based on someones own personal religious belief makes you look just as "mental". It's not for you or anyone to criticizes someone for what they religiously believe in regardless of how absurd you may think it is, this goes for both believers and non-believers.

I'm afraid I don't think it's rash at all, nor do I believe most people would see my view as equally mental.

Based upon what I, and I'm sure many like minded people, have come to perceive as rationality and intelligence -- hearing of people flocking to cry at the aesthetic realities of a strange tree strikes me as ridiculous. They're entitled to do it and feel whatever they want about it, but I'm also entitled to think they're fucking crazy.
