Viva Piñata - The Official Thread

Scoot said:
My debug just overheated, but I had attracted about six Pinatas pretty quickly into my garden. If I had more time, there's all kinds of hilarious blogs I could write about the ethical choices of sacrificing my inbred worm Renzo to the Sparrowmint family. There are these weird choices that you make and the notion of accomplishing tasks to get animals to **** is creepily funny. Plus, even on my janky ass SDTV at my desk -- game looks gorgeous. Frame rate in this build is vastly improved from everything I've seen.

This could be a right place, right time game for me -- stressful time of year, kick back with a shovel and a six pack and build a garden.

You guys responded so negatively to the game on the 1up show though! Playing this at TGS, I can easily tell you it was Rare's best work on the 360 yet. Innuendo, quirks, just flat out relaxing/fun gameplay along with stunning graphics ulitmately come together to form an amazing experience

But Luke, answer this. After playing for a few more hours, tell us if it's a game you'd spend your hard earned cash on

don't have my review copy yet, but my entire EB district had a shipping snafu and got viva instead of the majority of Gears Collector's editions - bad for everyone else, good for me who couldn't wait to play the game ASAP (i just stuck with regular gears). impressions:

first and foremost, downright gorgeous. the framerate is silky most of the time (put your fears away), the only technical quirk is the menus taking a second too long to load, when you're going in and out of them all the time. i'm having a tough time deciding which game looks better - this or gears. sounds like an exaggeration i know, and gears peaks higher (viva is never jaw-dropping, per se), but it's so colourful (that one's for those rare brits, on the house) and the art direction so focused and inventive that it's constantly gorgeous, even at night.

speaking of night, the day/night cycle is a little too quick - 10-15 minutes top, i would guess. while night looks great and gives you a breather while most of your pinatas sleep, it's a little too dark outside of the area right around your cursor to get as much done as during the day.

the structure of the game takes a bit of getting used to - it holds your hand more than any other game i've ever seen for the first 45 minutes - literally everything is explained with about three different menus. so you sit there nodding "uh huh, uh huh" as they tell you, thinking you'll be a master gardener by the time they shut up. not so much. the minute they're done explaining you wonder where the hell to start, and the minute you start you have ten different things going on.

unlike the BCD E3 demo i was witness to, and what most others would assume i think, the pace of the game can be pretty hectic. your tasks are constantly interrupted by pinatas fighting, new ones showing up, mating, new humans appearing to offer their services, etc. and often times the game will just interrupt you with a new task, just to make sure you can get the hang of it before you can go back to doing anything else. i'm sure things level out a bit once your garden's ecosystem stabilizes a bit and you have money to do whatever you need, but otherwise it's more or less constant multitasking.

the game intro is a bit obnoxious since the pinatas talk, just like the show, but thankfully no one talks in-game outside of the human characters who show up (who are very well-acted, have super-cute accents and even some subtle adult humor at times). i also caught a PS3/Genji rip in one of the early instruction menus, keep your eye out ;-)

overall, i'm very much enjoying it, definitely buy-worthy if you were at all excited about the game. i don't think you can really be disappointed with the experience of growing a garden unless you have grossly different expectations than you should. it looks great, and plays like sim city/harvest moon/AC:WW with a small dash of pikmin and what i expect spore to be. a solid 8 right now, even if i wish it were a bit more relaxing (i play it to destress from gears, and end up getting more stressed than killing locust if a whirlm wanders away for no apparent reason), with a lot of potential to get much better the more i play it. any questions?

Thanks for the impressions... I have a question.

Is the game in a normal case, or something weird. A check of the GameStop listing has a weird tombstone-shaped image in place of a normal boxart, and the standees have this image too.

gah, totally forgot to mention the case. i'm pretty sure it's the only edition (cost $50 and doesn't have extras outside of a second disc with demos of lego star wars 2, frogger and the interactive viva video), and it'd rather have cancer of the dick than open it again.

it has an outer plastic sleeve like halo 2 LE, then a box which feels like it's made out of a plastic plate that opens up DOWNWARDS, then a little ridiculous packet that lies inside with the instructions (which are also awkwardly shaped), and the game disc when it opens up. definitely completely unique, but ****ing terrible to use. specifically why i DIDN'T buy the gears LE. argh. if i can bear the soul-searing pain i'll take pictures of the process.

(no hyperbole disclaimer.)

I would love to see pics!

It would give me something to take my mind off GameStop not getting Gears until tomorrow... blah.

I hope the game gets great reviews though. That always helps justify my purchases.

I make up my own mind, if I let media sites control what I buy id probably be missing out half my collection of favs. At the very least there should be a demo for the people who can't decide with their own will.

that's the last time i ever do that. and i can't stress how poor the quality of the hard plastic case is. you could crack it by flicking it.

Like me.

I like to wait for reviews though. I use them all the time and I'm glad they exist or else I wouldn't have had EDIT: most of my favs either.

Besides, I can't just throw out 50 bucks hoping the game will be good. I need forum impressions and journalist reviews. So far so good. Board impressions are amazing.

All that's left my friend, are the reviews. I think the only time a review has failed me was with.....Halo 2's single player. I didn't quite understand why people liked it so much.

Anyways, I'll have to trade some of my Pinatas with you golden. :D

that's the strangest packaging I've ever seen. 0_o

What do you think is the right audience for this? I was considering it for my 4 year-old daughter, but 1up and now your impressions said it's both pretty hectic/stressful, and has lots of suble adult references. It seems like a kids game on the surface, but from what you've said, it does not play like one.

I really dig that packaging, it shows that love has gone into making this game. Its like the complete opposite of a black and white EA manual.

I'm glad people are enjoying the game, and people are realising that it's not just a quick cash in, but a quality product people have spent time to make it as good as possible.

i'm sure a 4 year old kid would enjoy messing around for it, as it's probably impossible to COMPLETELY ruin your garden and it's still super-cute, but if you were to play it with her i think you'd both be delighted. but FAR to difficult for her otherwise. plus you wouldn't have the complete pressure not to **** it up since it's her garden not yours :D

thanks for the impressions ( looking forward to giant crabs in the menus, lol). I´m gonna have to wait at least 2 weeks to get my hands on it.

i personally dont find surprising comparing the graphics with Gears. They are totally dfferent style but find them equally impressive.

Some questions:
1) doesnt it have a difficulty choice?. I recall there was one aimed for the children that shouldnt be as overwhelming as what you described. And can you enable/disable alarms/hints/helps?

2) can you pause the action and move around to look at everything is happening with enough time or is it inevitable to end up missing or losing events because all of the multitasking, at least in the first hours of gameplay.

3) is there any indication of time left to do some of the tasks or events, for example, how much time you have to cure a sick pinata or stop a fight or prevent one from leaving the garden?

4) any more minigames apart from the romance minimap?.

5) what about the music?. I´ve listened to the FSK mp3 and were wonderfull. I´m really looking forward to an official release of the soundtrack.

Reminds me of Ghoulies. That game had a very childish look with some very good adult jokes throwed in and even if the controls were easy to get into, some of the challenges were downright impossible for a kid.

As soon as I get word on region-coding I think I'll be ordering this, it should stop me from going section 8 after the GoW, FEAR, CoD3, Dead Rising etc carnage-fest.

I NEVER complain about box art or packaging or any of that kind of stuff, but I gotta say that I absolutely hate the package design that MS is using for Viva Pinata. I've got that Homer head Simpsons DVD set and it's the clunkiest, cheapest feeling case ever.

Anyway, I can't believe I'm actually thinking about picking this up today. I've got the absolutely huge FFXII to finish plus Gears of War to occupy my time. Then Zelda (GC) is coming out next month. I don't know when I'll find the time for all of this. There's just too much good stuff coming out this fall.....and god help me in 2007.

I want this game, but not the ugly special edition packaging. yuck... How long would one have to wait to actually get a normal game case?

LOL! I am playing Gears last night and Luke sends me a message saying that he is loving Viva Pinata. That is when I REALLY thought the last 24 hours were a ****ing trip to the Twilight Zone. The Dems take back Congress, Rumsfeld resigns/gets canned, my EB/GS does NOT get Gears of War, Gears of War ****ing blows away everyone who plays it, and then Luke comes on and says he really likes Viva Pinata. Seizing on the moment, I ran upstairs and asked the wife if I could buy a 61" 1080p set. When the lasers that came out of her eyes and burned my retinas, I knew I wasn't dreaming.

:lol :lol :lol

He's probably loathing himself at the same time though. "Gears of War is right next to me, and I'm ****ing playing around in a Garden filled with paper animals!?" :lol

Wonder if the whole game will lose its charm once the Micro-transaction extravaganza begins to invade :D

Who knows. They have done it pretty well with kameo and PDZ DLC and I dont expect anything remotely similar to Lumines in Viva Piñata.

I am picking this one up tomorrow. Probably my last game purchase for myself of the year. Looks like it could really be a nice change of pace game.

Edit - I forgot I already have Smackdown vs Raw halfway paid for. But I am really scared that I haven't heard much about the game for the past few months.

The asian version is only $40 at Play-Asia, I think this will be region free. Microsoft's last 3 releases have been after all :)

Does anyone know which stores have it on the shelves already? I'm too lazy to actually call anywhere, but if anyone has seen it in stores, the info would be appreciated.

That's why I'm hoping for Blue Dragon to be region free! I'm sure it won't, but I really want it to be. I'm going to be going tomorrow and picking this game up for my girlfriend and probably getting myself Tony Hawk's Project 8.

Btw, Blimblim, if you´re reading this.

Can we expect "first 10 minutes" or any other media coverage of piñata anytime soon?

I think that has more to do with the lawsuit more than anything. THQ was probably unsure if they were going to be allowed to release the game at one point. That is my guess anyways.

Yesterday was like that for me, too--I got Gears for my anniversary present, which is exactly the last anniversary present I expected, and I was even allowed to play it. Spooky.

Still on the fence about this game. It's going to have to hit exactly the right spot for me to buy it. And DOAX2 comes out in like 10 days.

But I hope it does well, my girlfriend is dying to play it so I may just buy it for her.

wait...dying to play DOAX2 or dying to play Viva?

DOAX2 comes out soon as well? I was going to get Viva for my gf, but she actually liked DOAX, she liked the casino and shopping mostly, lol.

Game looks fantastic; if I were into this genre I'd pick it up. Much like I appreciate the style and art direction of JRPGs but can't adjust to the gameplay, I like the cuteness of V.P. but the genre it falls under does not interest me.
