Viva Piñata - The Official Thread

I hope not. US media just got the game on non-retail format yesterday. A review right now would be premature. We're doing something a bit different with the Viva review. More soon.

You got Johns kids to do it? Isnt that a bit old had though? You got that kid to review NWN2 last week.

I hope my TRU gets this in today but their new release schedule has been shoddy at best lately....but I've got a gift card so I'm stuck with them.

One question though: Is it possible to have two different species of pinata mate and procreate? I want to have mutant pinatas! :lol

I just called Gamestop and she thinks it might be out tomorrow, but that I should check back. ARHGHGHGHGH!

The problem is that I have credit saved for this game, so yeah...

Rare has given some hints about that in recent interviews but i´m not entirely sure how that can happen. It may be one of the secret achievements and something very difficult to get.

What i read in other articles was that there may be different evolutions of the same specie of piñata and depends on how you play.

No copies at the EBs and Gamestops around me according to the website, and Best Buy's site is down for updating their online store? Who pulls down a corporate website to do updating? Lame...

Target also still says "Pre-order" on their website, that it's coming out on the 11th.

Must have Pinata-y goodness for the weekend!

This game is just really enjoyable. All my Pinatas were fighting each other after my first hour with the game and I didn't know what to do. So I sold them all except my Wyrms and just started over. More money, more stuff to buy now, and I have a bunch of animals jumping around. Pretty fantastic. It's so fun right now, I just hope there is enough to do so I'm still playing this in a month. Right now, I am quite pleased.

I think the real longevity will come from customization and online play/content.

Of course, the IGN review of Animal Crossing says the fun ends for most once you upgrade your house to the max, and I played far beyond that. Simulation games of this type are what you make of them.

I probably spent 100 hours in Pancacko (my AC:WW town) after I got the final upgrade. I hope Viva Pinata offers a similar need to see every inch of the game.

BTW - Did you hear Nintendo is releasing some Zelda related item for Wild World in celebration of the Wii launch? You just have to be online sometime during the week of launch to get it.

Why does everyone have such different release dates for this game. I've seen dates ranging from the 7th to the 17th. I think I'll try hitting a couple places during lunch to see if anyone has it.

I'm going to go pick it up right now and if anyone wants anything answered I'll be answering questions while I play. you can ask them on here or on xbox.

Right now i´m curious about the online modes/options ( trading items and piñatas, coop?, online arena?, rankings...) if there are any available out of the box.

And also if theres any photobook option to take shots as in PGR or DOAX.

I'm warming up for this game a little bit. I really like the colorful visual look of the game but from experience these kind of games (management games) aren't my thing. They really should release a demo.

Can someone list out the scores this game has received in reviews? (I'm at work and cannot see the review sites). :)

Only one. Gamesradar gave it an 8/10. Given the fact that sites just got the game, it's probably more of a preview/extrapolation from a few hours with the game.

Got my copy yesterday but haven't tried it yet, no thanks to GoW multiplayer.

Going to have it running/playing in the background today while I work.

Looking forward to a tranquil, happy existence after all that chainsawing in GoW. :D

BTW, you need to fix your mic. The messages you sent me last night were vacant.

And Pinata is an oasis in a world filled with gibs and exploding skulls.

Yeah my mic has been flakey.

I'll pick up another one from work today.

Is anybody seeing this physically at your local Best Buy or via in-store pickup online?

I just went to my BB during lunch and it wasn't out, no placeholder either. Also none showing up online near me.

Some people were asking about cross pinata mating and mutant Pinatas. Just thought I'd point out that the Viva Pinata cartoon episodes might have some hints about this.

For example, in one of the episodes a Horstachio eats a certain type of food and turns into a Zebra-like creature, and in another a duck creature eats a berry and turns into a goose.

I think this is one of the ways that creatures can transform into other creatures.

It doesn't answer the cross mating question, but does show how pinatas can mutate into others.

3 out of 6 "nearby" Best Buys have it. But that's better than none I guess.

In what area? The 6 NJ ones near me had them listed as out.

EDIT: I just checked and it shows instore available now by me.

EDIT2: Just ordered for in store pickup. Now I can give my gf her birthday present early and I won't be bugged while watching football this weekend. :D

It's pretty fun, but feels way too heavily bogged-down with front-loaded menus and instructions for a kids game. They would have done well to just slow down the pacing of it all a bit and return the focus to the player if they are hoping to attract a younger audience, but in so-far as a resource-management game for Tycoon fans or the like, it's kind of a fun spin on old familiar teritory.

Like the poster above, though, I'm kind of thinking of liquidating my entire garden and taking a fresh approach already, however, which should go a ways towards pointing out how overwhelming the game's pacing makes it.

Also, the consantly inbreeding Pinatas are kind of disturbing.

How does 2-player (local) work?

Sadly, I think you just made that up. Doesn't actually exist. It really wouldn't be too fun to play this two player anyway. It's not really that type of game. Still highly recommended, though.

You guys who have the game have to be clearer about what you actually do!

I'll post impressions later today. Haven't had a chance to delve into it yet.

Little thing called WORK getting in the way... sigh.

The easiest way to describe it to people who are familiar with video games is basically a small-scale Tycoon game in a more colorful setting. It's all about resource management in the end, and the Pinatas are not really pets or something you are going to interact or emotionally bond with, but simply more resources.

You play a cursor, in sort of standard "God-Game" mode, and basically try to fill off check-lists of new Pinatas to continue progression. Each Pinata will have an unknown, but primary list of circumstances that it needs fullfilled before appearing in the garden (for example, finding a large enough patch of grass), a secondary list of requirements to stay a resident (for example, eating two specimens of a given species of Pinata or plant), and then a final list of requirements that are needed in order to mate (two specimens required) and produce offspring, which can hopefully be sacrified to predators without ruining the "production capacity," basically.

There's a few other randomizing "natural disaster"-style elements such as Pinatas fighting amongst themselves for non-predatory reasons and such, as well as a plethora of shops and exchange-points for items-to-currency, but at heart, that's the basic gyst of the game.

Pinata's a new coat of paint, but a very old and trodden game idea for PC veterans. That's certainly not saying it's necessarily bad, it's just saying that I think messaging for this game's marketing has more or less completely confused what this game actually is, or who it's intended for.

Like I said before, I have a hard time believing that little children will actually be able to sit through the instructions. If it's trying to be Animal Crossing, it's horribly failed. But I do think this game has a chance of finding some kind of an audience amongst a different crowd if they could simply narrow down exactly what it is they are trying to accomplish.

At the very least, I'm looking forward to playing more and seeing if it can develop itself.

And what's work? Playing a few laps of Forza? You bastard.

btw, nice take Hunahan. I think I get what you're saying.

Family Mode - You can have up to four people playing the game at once. It's called family mode because it says in the manual this mode it to try and help your kids so they don't have to read through all the menus.

Xbox Live - you can trade items and Pinatas of course. they've also got co-op online, but I haven't had a chance to try that out yet.

Edit - They make it seem like you can only play on Live with friends.

I want to give you guys some impressions, but I'm afraid to open the game because of Gamestop's policy of no returns on new opened games.

You know you're going to open it anyway, so please just do so.

wait..why wouldn't you open it? Once you get past them holding your hand and explaining everything the game really opens up and is like nothing else on the xbox 360.

Eh...what the heck? It's not like I'm getting any games besides Zelda this year, and that's a month away (GCN version).

Okay, back in a bit.

Nice to finally read live coop confirmed.

Yep, that´s the spirit. Some of us, poor souls, will have to wait 2 more weeks to get our hands on it.

I picked up Viva today at EB along with paying off Smackdown vs Raw. They got 5 copies in and all the employees pretty much hated the package the game comes in. I'll be playing some of this Viva goodness tonight.
