Viva Piñata - The Official Thread

Plugged it in last night with the intention of playing for 15 minutes.

It was about 2 hours later when I finally saved, shut it off, and went to bed.

Well, i made the jump and purchased this game. Here's to hoping my opinion matches most of the others.

Did the same at lunch time today. The almost total lack of negative impressions finally made me realize I could be missing out big time. Man is that some ugly-ass packaging, though.

This game is very hard to hate just because it's so well thought out, and so colorful. I mean, it's not a "perfect" game, but as console simulations go, this is the best we'll see for a long time.

Oh yes. The game is much more appealing inside than on the outside.

i agree. i was one of those hesitant types to roam into GS/EB and have my wife purchase the copy. at that time i didn't really know what i was getting into. i was presently surprised at how wonderful the game turned out to be :).

Holy crap! I only just found the overhead view, it rocks. :D

(thats click in your right thumbstick if you're a n00b like me)

edit - and left thumbstick for cursor speed, nice. No way to make the target circle disappear though, thatd be handy on the left bumper.

How do you guys design your garden? Do you have your plants and whatnot in one part and fence of animals...or do you let them roam free? One big pool?
I'd really like to visit some garders to get some ideas :( I really hope Rare is able to put this in! They should do competitions (voting) for the best/most elegant designed garden (doesn't mean most expensive) and stuff like that.

What about fights? I cut my garder in the middle with a hedge, but it doesn't do much cause I have to leave the gates open for my helpers. Do some pinatas just always fight? Or is it because they don't have enough space?
Lost track of time yesterday and played till 2am in the morning!

Question again for everyone and specially for the ones with highest levels in the game ( or axxxj if you read it ). Has any of your pinatas achieved a constant toped "happy-meter"? or is it possible at all?

Yay, its good to spot the bad guys.

You have planted a lot of trees. I only have 2.

Great. i was hoping for that after the recent article.

I don't think its possible and it's not important either as far as I know... I've got to level 80 with most of my pinatas halfway happy.

How do I rename a pinata? Something in the interface is eluding me.

Press Y when its highlighted and then on Basic Info or whatever press A and it'll bring up the virtual keyboard thing that lets you type the name in.

I´ll try to put a top view of my garden like Fusebox did.

The only pinatas i have separated are the whirlms in an island on the center of my garden. Had the purpose of keeping my oldest ones safe, first from the fudgehogs that would eat them and second from others that may crush them when running around.

I once tried putting some "bush" fences but werent closed, just a wall or two and the idea was to give a bit of space for some of the plants like chili, that are used to get some money.

I have 1 apple tree in a corner near the entrance of the helper that harvest. And i also have the beehive near. The other tree is somwhere in the middle.

I think all my pinatas have their own houses except the sherbat, which i have to make next time i play.

Since a raisant became resident and started a fight with a buzzlegum ( natural enemies it seems ) i have been selling the raisants whenever theybecome residents to avoid problems. The rest of pinatas havent had any fight and they all run free.

They are more or less happy but far from toping the "happy-meter" which is what i´m trying to achieve.

Thats how most of my pinatas are, halfway happy. Some specific ones have been extremely happy either by putting them an item or because of other causes i dont know yet ( breeding maybe ) but it was for a while.

Would like to know if its possible with the right items or objects on the garden.

How the hell do you get apples off of an apple tree? I've had one for like 2 hours and I've never seen an apple on it or near it. I've tried tapping it with a shovel, watering it, fertilizing it, and nothing.

What the hell am I missing?

If you zoom in around the tree you can spot the little green apples growing. You have to tap it only when they are red, mature.

If there are none, check the info of the tree and see how many active apple sources it has. That depends on wether you used the fertilizer when it was growing ( once after each fall of leaves ). OR maybe it went dry.

so here are my first hands-on viva impressions:

so i ordered the game for my girlfriend for christmas and it just came today, but i knew she was excited about it so i decided to give it to her early. so she pops it in around midnight and she is having a blast managing her garden and such. meanwhile im just looking at her play and admiring the pretty colors of the game.

so after about an hour she goes off to bed. so i decide 'hey lets give this game a whirl, i dont have work tomorrow anyway.' so i pop in the game, sign into my account and start my own garden. well long story short (kinda to late), i just finished playing....and at its 5:30am! i was hooked, like i literaly couldnt stop. its such a damn good game. im already a level 11 and i loved every minute of this game so far. as you play, you really start to understand how deep the game is.

seriously guys, if you didnt pick this game up yet, and you own a 360, go buy it right now.

I had this problem at first too. Trees have to be fertilized a bit differently then plants. With plants you can fertilize them three times in a row right away, but with trees you have to wait a bit and fertilize at certain times. It's kinda hard to explain but I'll try:

1) First fertilizer (red fertilizer for the apple tree) can be done right after the tree is planted (make sure to water it as well).

2) The next one you'll have to wait around 2 minutes or so - you'll know when you see it stop growing (if you look closely at it you can see it moving... you can hold the R trigger and move the camera to get a closer look on the tree) or you might see leaves fall off it.

3) After you fertilize it the 2nd time you'll see it start to grow again. When it stops do it a third (and final) time and it'll become a full grown healthy tree that produces lot of fruits...

Watched the Eurogamer Show. Nice one.

Even though i do like Ghoulies and think its underrated I laughed when the guy from Eurogamer was showing the games on the bench.

Anyway, i´m glad the Rare people is getting a well deserved praise for Pinata and more so if there are lots of members from the ghoulies team.

And its a pity the concept artbook material its not available at all. Its looks very interesting.

Just got the game, played it for an hour or two and I've been wondering:

- How can you feed the love sweets to your residents? I remember Leafos saying that I should put it in front of them and they will automatically eat it, but my Sparrowmints kept ignoring it. Also tried directing them with the A button, but to no avail.

- Is there a way to store items somewhere? I've got a couple of vegetables I'd like to keep so I can lure other piñata's (such as the mouse) and I hate how they're currently unprotected (haven't boughed any fences yet for a "private garden").

Love sweets only work when you've romanced the species (or is that particular pinata?) before.

AFAIK you can't store stuff. They start to rot over time though.

Viva is like a time vacuumer. You always want to try 'just one more thing'. Lets see what happens if I tinker this, or need to water this plant, ooh I can get to romance this pinata.'

Man. I'm level 30 and knew shit about fertilizing trees. Thanks :D

I never used fertilizer before and I noticed that my apple trees could be harvested 4 or 5 times before they completely stop producing apples. If I fertilize correctly, would my trees produce apples forever?

And Orodeth, could you please post an overview picture of your garden? Since this game never ends I'd like to use your map as a standard to create some artificial challenge to the game (and extra fun).

Dang, I assumed they'd work on species who haven't romanced yet. If the Whirlms are any indication, I don't see why I should buy the love sweets 'cause the heart above a piñata remains after a romance dance.

One more thing though:

- Is there a way to store a template of a label design? I noticed that the offsprings of a piñata that does have a label, carry it over after their birth, but I haven't found anything yet that saves my template or automatically transfers it to new residents.

they dont remain, they only remain for whirlms because the only stimulant they need is pretty much constant.

If one pinata requires to eat 2 apples for example, they'd need to eat 2 more after one baby. Which can become a nuisance.

My game still crashes a lot, I dunno if the auto save is the cause, but thanks to it, I can kind of keep rebooting and not losing much progress. But its certainly slowing me down so much. I hope they fix this bitch asap cos it is depressing.

cheer me up by sending me presents :D

The romance candy works only after the first "engagement".

Image of my first garden:

I just got the last expansion and have the intention of reorganizing it.

The only consistent part from the beginning has been the Whirlm Island htat i´m thinking on expand a bit and put other houses there. I´m interested in the quackberries and maybe other bird pinatas.

This game was completely off my radar but with all the recent good impressions I'm tempted.

It may be a soothing complement to the adrenaline rush of Gears.

Cool, nice map Orodeth.

One thing I don't like about this game is the inconsistency of the design choice for animal houses. Some look logical and some are just plain wacky/stupid looking.

just a quick tip i thought i'd share. if you guys are having issues keeping up w/ watering your plants, hire more than one helper. the "sprinklings" are a good way to stay on top of your garden if you're the type to plant a shitload of stuff. plant before morning before they come in and you will be fine. i did this early in the game around lvl 15 or so and it has helped me tremendously.

I agree some are a bit goofy but others are great even if they arent consistent at all.

In the last marathon playing the game i´ve changed all a bit. Made the island bigger and planted some trees and put some paving on the left side and now have a pair of quackberrys ( pukie, a gift from a friend, and Berry Manillow ).

Also on the right side i plan on putting the sinister side of the garden with my crowlas and sherbats. A more desolated space with some tombstones also.

Unfortunately, not everything went right. Professor Pester finally made an appearance and killed my macarracoon "Don Vito". It looked like something from godfather but instead of oranges there were apples :_( . What a mother f*cker. Is there an upgrade for the shovel to smash him?

Another question. I can´t put any more houses. I think i have a maximum of 10. Is it possible to have more at once?

For getting rid of Professor Pester (and the ruffians) buy the cutlass sword from the Trader (you have to
give the beggar 1,000 chocolate coins or so then he will open up his shop and sell you cool stuff
. I think you have to be level 30 or so to get it. It's kinda expensive, like 12,000 coins but its worth it.

There's no other way to stop him, hitting him with the shovel does nothing.

I have access to the trader so i´ll try to level up faster. I´m 24 now i think.

The houses maximum is 10 at the same time then?

I'm surprised you're allowed that many. I don't think I've ever had more than 4 in my garden at a time, and even that seemed way too crowded.

Sent out some pinatas to some of the lower leveled folks who've friended me.. let me know if you need something else. If someone could send me a pigxy (sp?), that'd be amazing. I could send something in return if need be.

This and Gears of War almost keeping me sated until I next see my girlfriend... damn I hate university and being so far away.

This game though is pleasantly surprising. Im only on like level 2/3 atm but enjoying it thus far!!!

There is a free Viva Pinata gamerpicture just put on XBL Marketplace - but for two days only. So get it now if you want it.

if anyone is wondering what it looks like, its just the GamerTile of VP but bigger.

I thought the maximum was accorded by the garden space, which i still have plenty available, and i thought eventually each specie needs the house to keep them happy and safe and not only for breedding purposes.

Right now i have the following ( i correct myself, i have had as many as 11):
1) Houses: Whirlms, Sparrowmints, Candary, Mousemallows, Crowlas, Syrupents, preztails, lickatoads, quacberrys and buzzlegums. And also have had the redhots one to get master romancer for that pinatas ( now that house is sold ).
2) Species: Almost a pair for each house and also a macaracoon ( "Don Vito", the other one was murdered by Pester), an arocknid, a sherbat.

So should i better focus on 4-5 and sell the rest of houses?

And apart from the "buzzlegums vs raisants" and "redhots vs arocknids" i havent had fights.

Finally got the game, god damn its sooo cute, my first whirlm sacrifice was heart wrenching.

Intertron, thanks for the kitties :D I haven't even touched on changing colours and accessories yet, you really showed me the way.

I imagine I'm way behind you and have nothing to send in return at the moment - do you have any requests? My most valuable are buzzenge and swetooth I think...

and as if by magic my game crashes a lot less now, still perhaps every hour or two, but nowhere as bad as before, when it was like 2 minutes - crash.

It only came out in Europe yesterday yet I've already played it for about 10 hours:lol I think it's one of the best console strategy games I've played in ages. I know it's not perfect but tbh I'm struggling to think of one genuinely bad thing about this game. It's a bit clunky to move through the buy/sell menus...and I think that's my only complaint.

It's so sad when a Pinata dies though. I'm trying to romance two of the rabbits but a wild snake keeps coming along to eat one of them. Luckily though that makes the snake a resident, meaning I can sell it immediately for $600:lol

you're RLench? Did you get what I sent you?

Professor Pester took out my pimped out Chewicorn.....that bastard! I went to the bathroom and left the game running and by the time I came back all the other pinatas were feasting on Gary's innards.

*sob*

I'll miss ya Gary! The way you were constantly pissed off and running around like an idiot. The way that you kept getting in a fight with that damn raccoon. And how could I ever forget the way I had to constantly call the doctor on your dumb ass 'cause you were too stupid to avoid eating the poisoned candy.

You were the best Gary! The best!
