Voyeurism in games

You have not answered the question, you have just described what voyeurism is. We know that you get excited by "peeking into someone's private moments", the question is why exactly. IMO the reason is the feeling of superiority. You become a god-like entity with the access to information no one else has, and it's a valuable, often compromising stuff you can possibly choose to use to your advantage. Also, mentally you "rule" over the subject of your observation, which is something very hard to achieve in everyday life.

Nope, that's totally not how I feel about voyeurism at all. Voyeurism is just peeking. And peeking brings excitement just because I'm seeing something I normally wouldn't. I don't get this god-like feeling that you have.

This picture annoys me. Why dont the girls staring into the mirror notice the guy standing behind them with a knife? Lol.

Because he's hidden in de shadows.

"yeah but I can still see him lol", yeah.. Gameplay mechanics.

Snake is basically the voyeur perv of video games.

Dudes pissing in every game, female characters always found doing push-ups/being unconscious or in some other situation where you can freely oogle/crawl on them and take photos. Sometimes the villains do the same. You can look at t&a in cut-scenes and some scenes even zoom on them on purpose. Main character is always naked/shirtless at some point.

Even the enemies look at porn mags and posters about bikini babes.

Wikipedia defines voyeurism as a form of paraphilia; however, that classification does not include "people who experience typical sexual arousal simply by seeing nudity or sexual activity". So, pretty much everyone is a voyeur to some extent, but those people aren't really voyeurs. Confusing, I know.

When reading the title, one that immediately came to mind that is a little outside the norm is in Half-Life 2, just after (or before) fighting off that swarm of enemies in the "Odessa" region, you can use binoculars and see off into the distance...

HL2 is filled with these, as you watch the GMan have clandestine meetings just around major events in the game.

Obviously, this isn't sexual voyeurism, but I think that it fits.

Max Payne 2 has a level set in an occupied apartment building, and at one point, if you explore, you can hear a couple having sex. The audio lasts for a good minute or so.

How would you know that?

Max had been through a lot so I figured the least I could do was allow him to enjoy sex vicariously.

Mind you, he did get to bang Mona later on. (Edit: Or was it that she lead him into the false assumption and used it to her advantage? My memory on this particular plot point is fuzzy.)

He totally re-visited that part multiple times to hear it in full.

Ah, the good ol' days of quick save/load. :p

yeah whats with jrps and swimsuits?

There's always a hot springs or beach segment episode in many JP games/TV shows. It seems out of place in some stories, but I get the appeal; it's a change of pace where you get to see the characters in a more relaxed setting, which is usually different from the norm.

I remember I used to be a member of my university's National Association of Black Journalists chapter and during one of the conventions, we went to the beach. It was fun hanging out since we normally only met for meetings/projects. Got to see our chapter's president in a bikini ... Now that I think about it, I actually did take a creepshot of her and our vice president saw me, but didn't say anything. he just gave a knowing nod.

I like games like Mr Mosquito that does this because there's a kind of surrealism and intimist approach that is rarely achieved in other games or media.

In Mr Mosquito, voyeurism is taken to another level because of the sense of scale giving detail to things which isn't possible in real life. The tone is very humoristic as well.

A lot of PS1-PS2 era games had this kind of imaginative design with a bit of a voyeur approach, for example ROOMANIA#203, リモココロン, UFO ~a day in the life~, Koufuku Sousakan, Chibi-Robo, the Siren series (along with many other survival horrors like Disaster Report) and even Seamen.

Voyeurism can be an interesting theme because of how prevalent it is in modern pop culture and video game is a great medium for exploring it. So I think even series like Idolm@ster and LovePlus can be interesting in that sense.

A lot of games cited in this thread are instances where I think voyeurism is creepy and harmful (Heavy Rain, Dishonored) and games like AC and Deus Ex where you can read other people's e-mails, because it's too grounded in reality, and does not offer a different point of view from real life.

We need more games with voyeurism.

It's also one of the reasons stealth games can be so fun, when you see or hear something your not supposed to. :)

Another reason why I disliked Gravity Rush, all those panty shots and "ooohhh I just got out of the shower" scenes.

Also when your at her home, you can move your vita to peer around. Extremely voyeuristic and just creepy.

Oh, come on. None of Kat's costumes are particularly revealing; they did a good job of keeping her covered up even when flying upside down. And there's nothing creepy about looking inside a disused pipe that the protagonist has managed to turn into a quite homey residence.

(Disclaimer: unabashed Gravity Rush fan)

Really? One of my favourite games ever but I haven`t picked up on that yet. Could you detail it a bit more?

Most of the panty shots come from the comic book cutscenes. I liked the game, just not the storytelling and characters.
