VR-Zone: Android 5.0 to come in late October, will be well optimized

Google I/O came and went, but everyone kept wondering where Android 5.0 was. Everyone had the same question, when will Google launch the next version of the world’s most popular OS? Reports started coming in that the company will instead release a stop-gap Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. The reason for delay? Well, to give OEMs some breathing space (as per the report).

The latest news from our sources is that Google will take the wraps off their truly next-generation Android OS, a.k.a 5.0 Key Lime Pie some time in late October. I take the liberty to remind you folks that October happens to be the rumored time-of-appearance for the Motorola X Phone, and the absence of a new Nexus Smartphone only feeds more fuel to our report (fire). A Nexus 5 introduction along with the debut of a new version of Android isn’t unheard of, Google did the exact same thing with the Galaxy Nexus and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (which serves as the foundation of the current and upcoming Jelly Bean builds), both were simultaneously launched in the November of 2011.

Our sources left us with some more info regarding the OS. Android 5.0 will be an optimized OS and will run well even on devices with 512 MB of RAM. The last time that happened, we were in 2010 running Gingerbread (Android 2.3). Perhaps this is Google’s next big push, optimizing the crap out of their (admittedly unoptimized OS). If Apple’s iOS can do it, if Microsoft’s Windows Phone can do it, why can’t Google make an optimized OS that runs well on a moderate 512 MB of RAM?

The question remains though, has Google given up on Nexus devices from its own stable? With the recent introduction of the Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Edition (Nexus-like) Smartphones (with a rumored Xperia Z on the way as well), Google may have found solace in their new approach. Well, I guess we’ll find out all the answers towards the end of the year.

Wait, I thought Android 5.0 was already announced.

Ooops, that was the iOS 7.0 beta. My bad.

Assholishness aside, this and the Google edition initiative means a ton of cool phones for me to choose from next Christmas.

i thought it was already confirmed KLP was 4.3 through version numbers (of builds that showed up in bugzilla and stuff) and stuff. and releasing 4.3 soon and then 5 in october would be a bit crazy

Hmm. I am probably more hyped for this than I was for ICS.
With the rumoured metric-shit ton of innovation in Key Lime Pie versus the blatant "inspiration" of IOS7, we're going to have a situation that seemed unimaginable three years ago. A highly ironic twist.

I've been out of the loop for a while since I bought my Nexus 4. I read about iOS7 and seemed nice. Care to clarify? I assume my nexus will be compatible with Android 5.0 and would like to know about it.

This article is all crap reiterated by an unknown website seeking hits.

It states things already known. Other than the 512 MB rumor, these are all incredibly safe bets. October, Xphone, blah blah. Give me a break. And there's no new Nexus phone news because we're still four to five months out.

I don't really get this. It can't be a rhetorical question, because the answer to it goes against what they're trying to say.

Thing is, will it come to any phones that actually have 512mb of RAM? My HTC One V is stuck in time at 4.1, if memory serves, and it runs like a 3-legged dog that has to keep stopping to bite at fleas.

How many devices that have 512mb RAM, will have the official release?

If they give a list than it's still up to the manufactures right? I remember that my HTC Desire HD couldn't get ICS or something because HTC couldn't optimize it for my phone while Google announced my phone would get it.

Jelly bean kind of ruined android for me. Made my phone so slow... =\

Thinking about iPhone... iOS 7 looks good to me now..

Nexus 4, 7 and 10 will all get this. For certain. Galaxy Nexus? Probably not.

This makes no sense though. We're apparently getting Android 4.3 in the next few weeks? From all the rumours and new bluetooth certs that have been going on anyway.

There was a session at Google IO where they detailed an entirely new framework for 2D graphics processing which should dramatically reduce the amount of computation the phone requires to render stuff on screen. That was rumoured for 4.3?

Who knows at this point... Sundar Pichai took over from Andy Rubin just before IO. It's quite possible 4.3 is just dead.

Sweet.

Damn, so many people barely have ice cream sandwich or jelly bean.

Here's hoping Samsung and HTC and other companies work with carriers to get it out as quickly as possible.

Cheap phones never get upgrades. OEM's prioritise their flagships first and they always will.
