Wait, wait: Australians, is The Orange Box out this week?

Fucking hell! Is that like the best value game in Australian history? I think so... Shit, Bioshock is $109 in my local Kmart! I'm moving out of the house with a 360 in 3 weeks though.... :(

Generally JB is the cheapest. But you're best to shop around because half the time there's one store with a sale on somewhere.

On the subject of Bioshock. I got that when it was released for $78 from JB. Granted, I did flirt with the chick behind the counter and strangely received a discount... I was over the moon but my wife who was standing next to me wasn't too impressed.

Shit! I was considering a download off steam thinking it was around about 5GB.

Looks like its retail for me.
Well, you could always download it in parts. You download it per game rather than just one big download, so if you weren' so hyped by some of it you could just pause those downloads until your limit recycles. Worth the $40 or so savings imo, but ymmv.

I never pay full price for a game, and release dates for are chumps I always find a way to get things early that I really want.. :D

I bought my copy at JB HiFi last Sunday. I started playing the titles in chronological order and am already up to Episode 2. Loving it. :D

I was on 1500k and 20gb but with the recent price increases I had to drop to 512K and 20gb. 1/3 of the speed really sucks.

Same here, plus my uploads count towards my monthly limit too. God bless Telstra and their work in this country.

I just picked up a copy at Adelaide JB then.

I was in town interviewing Rogue Traders, for those who care.

Delta >>>>> Izzy from Neighbours

Rogue Traders, is this the band that appeared on big brother as if they were some massive hit band but nobody had ever heard of them yet the contestants on the show acted as if they were a massive band but were actually really shit?

That's them! They suck. A lot. Although, to be fair, they do have two albums in the top 40 at the moment, so they probably are rather popular.

Too right. And as karmic proof, I'm interviewing Ed Kuepper on Thursday. Wheeee!!

clowns_narrowweb__200x300.jpg

He was in The Saints and the Laughing Clowns, then released roughly 3 million solo albums in the '90s. He just released a new one featuring Chris Bailey from The Saints and Warren Ellis from Dirty Three.

Colour me exceptionally jealous. My housemate went to the Adelaide show on Friday, but I couldn't afford a ticket/get a review ticket. I hear it was as brilliant as you'd expect?

Yeah was great. I hadn't ever seen Nick live. He's certainly a showman and full of energy.

I wish it wasn't in the Enmore though. I hate that venue. The only beer they serve is VB. God that stuff is horrible.

Since EA are distributing this ill instead download it in parts.

Rather Valve get all my $'s.

I've never seen him either, but I've seen enough videos to know I'm a dick for not having done so.

VB is horrible. Truly horrible. I don't know anyone who likes it - even Victorians hate it. I haven't even touched it since 2001. They had $1 cans at a Klinger show at the QBH in Melbourne. Suffice it to say that I drank enough of them in an hour and a half to throw up eight slices of partially digested Kraft Singles on the train on the way home. Stupid VB.

The only time VB is tolerable is when its served ICE cold from tap. Even then anymore then one and you're pushing into dangerous territory. I strictly drink preservative free beer these days, hangovers are just not worth it.

To me all the "Australian" beers taste pretty awful. I only drink Stella's and other imports, they cost twice as much but life's too short to be drinking shoddy beer.

Haha. Is it just me or does every Australian thread end up off topic eventually.

Stella all the way for me in regards to beer. Never got a hang over from it either.

I still drink a lot of South Australian beer. I really love Cooper's Pale and Dark - especially Dark with a twist of lime. It's pretty freaking girly, yes, but that's just how I roll.

And yeah, every Aussie thread goes off topic. It's seemingly my fault, more often that not. Whoops.

Eh, they were nice enough, I guess. Delta was just friendlier, and more naturally attractive. Natalie was caked in foundation.

Coopers is fantastic and one of the nicest beers money can buy imo. Also, make sure your imports are actually imported. Lots of big name beers that originate overseas are brewed under license either locally or in NZ. The only beers worth paying more for are the beers that are actually brewed in europe, especially germany as they have purity laws.

It makes ever more sense to make your own beer as it is cheaper, tastes better and is loads of fun and immensely satisfying.

Also _mar, I think its just inevitable that any thread with a large % of australians in it will descend into a conversation about beer :lol

Does that include Heineken? Because I swear, there's one restaurant I go to where it tastes absolutely awesome. But everywhere else tastes watered down and boring. The label on the bottle at the restaurant contains no english at all.

It's funny, but every now and then I go to the bottle-o with the express intention of buying the cheapest non-VB six pack possible. I don't know if it's a western sydney thing, but it seems to be invariably imports. I have this Belgian "Maes" beer in the fridge at the moment which isn't the best beer in the world, but it's better than a lot of local stuff. I've had some great $10 six packs that bought with a similar philosphy. I know it's a different story at a pub though. As for the local beer I usually go for the James Squire Amber Ale, or Tooheys Old (vegemite juice) in a pinch.

And yeah, Nick Cave is fantastic live. Does Warren Ellis still tour with him? It's been a while since I've seen them.

Coopers is awful, at least what i've tried of it. I wouldn't throw it on my steak, let alone drink it!

Thats interesting about imports, learn something every day and all that jazz. I guess they'd have to mark that on the bottle? Worth checking, I suppose, though I can't imagine high end brands actually doing that.

My uncle used to brew his own beer, and while decent, it never compared to commercial stuff. Apparently it has something to do with the type of yeast used" which is only available to proper breweries.

I also live in western Sydney. I was told by a bottle shop manager that it's because they can't sell the expensive imports. So usually they have to mark them down heavily to sell them before they expire.

Yeah, Warren is with Nick in their new band, Grinderman.

It absolutely includes heineken. I laugh at people who consider it a boutique beer. Having no english on the bottle is probably a good sign that it is a proper import.

I'm afraid you and I, sir, can never be friends :P In all seriousness tho, Coopers Sparkling Ale, especially on tap, is sensational. And Coopers Vintage is out of this world.

High volume brands are ironically more likely to do it, as they have the money/volume sales to license out production. I know for a fact that Heineken and Carlsburg aren't made in Holland/Denmark (the stuff we buy here that is). Its been a long time since I had Becks in a bottle so I can't remember about that. It will say on the bottle, brewed under license in xxx by xxx, if it is a licensed version. Also watch out for things that say, brewed under supervision of xxx.

I can honestly say that your uncle wasn't making it right. I've been doing homebrew for about a year now and I can honestly say except for the really high end stuff like your trappist beers and your really, really expensive imports, good homebrew wipes the floor with anything you get from a shop. Thats not just me either, my beer is very much in demand from my friends too :)

I thought it would be something like that. Living in a cultural wasteland has it's advantages.

Yeah, Warren is with Nick in their new band, Grinderman.
Wow, reminds me of something from 'You're Funeral, My Trial' or that kind of era. I am so out of the loop. Thanks.

I've only every tried one kind of Coopers beer, so lets not unsheathe out the stubby holders just yet!

Realistically I can't imagine the locale of the beer brewing (except for temperature and whatever else, which can be regulated) affecting the quality of the beer assuming the outsourcing is taken seriously. Heineken is an over rated beer, really, I wouldn't consider it a "premium beer", to me its always felt like another countries local beer with a premium price tag.

I can't imagine how, but obviously you've nailed a good formula (Or have an inverse palatte!). To the patent office!

heh, I just follow the directions to the letter and it comes out great :D keeping everything spotless clean is vital, and good temperature regulation. Also purified water. All of them and you can't go wrong :D And for the end product tasting great, being around 50 to 75cents a bottle, and not giving you a hangover, you'd be pretty silly not to do it :D

Vooks Bitter?

I never liked Heineken until I tasted it at this restaurant. It blew me away. I've been buying it from other cafes etc but can't find anywhere that tastes the same.

Vooks Bitter would be Pepsi Max, I drink an unhealthy amount of that.

I love coopers pale and sparkling....especially on tap, though there are only a few pubs in Vic that have it.

Little Creatures from Perth is also really nice.

Though, my favorite Aussie beer would probably be James Squires Amber Ale.

Back on (or off) topic....

I'm not sure that it is a 14GB download.

I bought Orange box through steam. And due to the shitty board band I have, Had a mate make a backup of TF2 for me. That also gave me 72% of the files needed for Portal and I think about 50% of the files needed for EP2 which meant that I only had to download about 2-3GB.

So if you can get someone to make a backup of either TF2 or EP2, It will cut down the amount of shit you have to download significantly.

Incidentally - excuse the DP - we really need to get some Australian GAF games happening in Team Fortress 2 once everyone picks up the game. If you don't have me added to your friends list, I'm littlemaths.

Speaking of bandwidth limits, I think we're about to change over to TPG ADSL 2. The 70 bucks a month plan gives 150 gig downloads. Granted, 110 of that is off peak, but it's not hard to set up downloads at night.

I seem to have missed the best part of this thread, but for what it's worth if we're talking some unusual beers I would suggest San Miguel.

Not that it tastes unusual but it's a frickin' great Spanish beer that I discovered when I was in Spain a year or two back. Best beer I've ever had actually.

The version we get in Australia is made in Indonesia I think and doesn't taste as awesome as the Spanish-made stuff (we get a lower alcohol %) but it's still pretty nice.
