Waiting in queue to play my $60 single player game. The future is awesome (Diablo 3)

More people would be outraged if they considered Diablo a single player game, which clearly most people do not. This isn't Assassins Creed. However everyone is pissed that the game isn't working.

I'd say quite a significant of people will play this game as single player only, it's also very heavily focused on the single player experience as stated by Blizzard. It will likely be a very popular online game however there is really no excuse for needing always online DRM. I definitely think this has more to do with people giving Blizzard a wide berth just because it's Blizzard, something we should never do as consumers.

My google fu is weak today. Haven't had any success finding percentages of offline vs online players in a variety of games, nor the quotes I've read here on GAF that state the majority of players in even the most popular online games never play multiplayer.

Anybody know where I could find some figures?

I compiled a poll of 1 people (me) and found that 100% want to solo Diablo III.

As someone on the fence, this is one of the issues keeping me from getting the game. I don't particularly care about mp.

Its such bs, but they got away with it for Starcraft 2 as well. Although they used the 'omg people might cheat in a single player game for achievvvvvvs!' excuse that time.

Its such bs. Lucky I got d3 for free or I might be peeved to a larger extent.

And its great but if this was ubi there would be a boycott and trolling and anger and threats to France.

Hey man its not "hand holding" its "guided content". Its not "patch day" its "content update day" (because patch infers there's something that needs fixing).

Just like how at work you don't have "a problem" you have an "an issue". Problem is too negative, man.
Ha ha ha, oh man.

It's amazing what a change in terminology can do to perception. I plan on getting into the PR business and it still pisses me off how well it works! "Problem" vs "issue" is the best.

Btw, all you "It's an MMO" people can explain the "Open game to public" button that appears at the pause screen of the SINGLE player game. Guess who's wrong?

Yeah. Which was clearly the focus of the game considering basically all the ways to build characters were designed around being online and having access to other players.

Dude, what the fuck are you talking about? The online IS the single-player but with other people.

I love that latency is now an issue in single player games though, thats the real forward thinking of Blizz, especially when they are too cheap to put a server in Australia.

Carlin (as usual) has something similar to this on how children are treated nowadays. "Loser" vs. "last winner" etc. :lol

I'm sitting here laughing at the fact that if any other game or company was to pull this exact same stunt alongside the downtime issues, all those defending d3 and blizzard would be quick to tear the game apart

If you've already bought the game, the only way you can send the message to Blizzard that you don't think it's an acceptable way to do business is now to not play the game. Don't wait in the queue, and don't play the game once they get the queue worked out. Just pretend you dropped $60 into a storm drain or something.

Anything else is basically tacit approval of their shitty DRM. Even if you get really grumpy and complain about it on every Internet forum you know.

I wonder if bombing Metacritic user scores has ever had any real results.

In fact does anyone care about Metacritic user scores at all?

Bioware does! But only with "professional" reviews!

I've heard a lot of very sour things about Diablo III this week, but the queue for single player takes the cake. What actually offends me are the foolish people who actually have the gall to defend and justify it. If this wasn't a Blizzard title, I don't think those apologists would be so defensive to the game.

So is the issue being stuck at updating the setup files? Because that's my problem. I bought the disc and can't even install the game.

Is there honestly an anti-consumer DRM policy defense force on this forum?

If I had bought D3 today, and I almost did before checking this thread, I would have had absolutely no clue you had to wait in line to play single player. Call me ignorant, call me a part of the problem, or whatever idc.

Maybe Blizzard, or any other developer for that matter, shouldn't implement such draconian DRM in the first place. Then I wouldn't have to spend my free time picking and choosing what game to play based on which policies contained therein I deem unethical or not. For fear of condoning such behavior with my own money... of course.

Fucking this.

The way the internet eats up public relations bullshit, man. I'm still mad that PR managed to change "micro transactions" to the more consumer friendly term "DLC". People love acronyms I guess.
To be fair DLC does not always mean microtransactions. For example, Shivering Isles (a $30 expansion to Oblivion) is DLC but is in no way a microtransaction.

watching from the sidelines, this seems really, really gross

If a linear, instanced ARPG like Diablo can't be launched properly, just imagine what a mess the Blizzard/Bungie MMO launch is going to be.

Team Fortress 2 is my favorite MMO!
Nintendo hasn't made a Pokemon MMO because it already is one! Thank you Global Trade Center!

They probably wanted to avoid using the term "expansion pack" in that case. Why? I couldnt tell you. Maybe because its a term generally associated with PC gaming. Which comes with it's own preconceptions.

It's fucking stupid and Blizzard should get flak appropriately. Ubi did always on DRM and got shat on, so Blizzard deserves the same treatment.

So...what's the current issue? I say this as someone who doesn't own Diablo III. Is it just that their servers are still getting hammered by too many people?
Basically.

That's what we call an expansion pack. :p

Okay so.

Place your bets, everyone.

Who will be the first games journalist to play the "entitlement" card over this stuff? And when will it happen?

If the server is busy you have to wait to play the game? WTF. This is what the beta was for. The game was in beta for a long, long time and even had an open beta for a few days. Then the beta was shut down for 2 weeks for them to prepare for this.

Come on blizzard, get your shit together.

Someone who really, really loves Blizzard. Do we have a known Blizzard fan in the "journalist" community?

Why do you call it a single player game? That's clearly not what it is. They structured it in a way you'd structure an MMO.

Not saying you, or anyone, shouldn't be frustrated by DRM, but this "singleplayer game" whining is really annoying.

There are millions of examples of this out there proving this is not a valid defense, but let me name a few.

Any fighting game ever
Super Smash Bros. Series
Left 4 Dead series

I will vote with my dollar.

Blizzard is getting out of hand.
No Lan for SC2 and now this?

Where will gamers draw the line?
When will they say: 'No, this is BS' ?

That was my biggest complaint with the Beta: getting lag spikes while playing solo. Like the worst of both worlds.

Im still trying to get the game installed(bought the DVD). wth.

It stopped at 77%
I restarted. Now its saying 'failed to open required file. Disable any antivirus software'

EDIT: Now I cant even get past the 'updating setup files..' thing

Going back a few years now, way before WoW, but online mmo's had a real problem with companies that sold gold, characters and items. Pretty sure Diablo 2 had the same thing. These companies worked long and hard enforcing a new terminology to replace "gold sales" and "yantis sites" that was prevalent at the time, in order to appear respectable. The phrase they coined was "secondary market" because it alluded to that industry being just a natural offshoot of online gaming. When players saw the term secondary market, they assumed it had a respectability. The term was a deliberate attempt at changing peoples perception to the practice of gold sales.

Over time, these companies PR guys began attending officially run fan faires, buying up fansites, and the general perception of them being dodgy bastards that ruined economies because of their greed (which is exactly what they were) faded. As new players came in, they didn't have the hatred for gold sales that the old guard had. The old guard had kids and got married. Nowadays, the video game industry incorporates the secondary market themselves. What was once looked on with disgust (n00b who bought his character and doesn't know how to play) is now very much a part of the establishment. And it all started with a name change.
