Just thought I'd mention this, since I know there were some fans of the show:

What is Wakfu?

Wakfu is a French animated production that started a few years back, based on a similarly named MMORPG. The story is set a thousand years after a cataclysm, otherwise known as the "Ogrest Chaos", that caused the world to become flooded and turned into a series of archipelagos. While the world is still feeling the effects of this disaster in the form of rising waters and monsters, it is also facing a threat in the form of a Xelor named Nox, who has exceptional control over time itself. Nox is traversing what's left of the world to steal a primordial energy called Wakfu, and his efforts have lead to the destruction of many nations over the years.

Enter Yugo, a young boy whose hometown had been attacked by Nox. It is soon found out that Yugo is an Eliatrope, a race that hadn't been seen for over a thousand year. Joined by his friends and allies, Yugo sets out not just to find his real family and learn of his origins, but to also stop Nox before his efforts condemn their world even further.

Why Wakfu?

Wakfu was very notable at the time for several reasons. Being done in Flash, the show looks visually unique, offering colorful vistas and characters, as well as impressive animation and choreography. These first few minutes of the show should give you a rough idea of what it looks like. Although Flash gets knocked on due to its notoriety as a money-saving option (and it really shows in some of the worse cartoons), Ankama went all out here, creating a complex animation not just in terms of presentation, but narrative as well.

Wakfu is a serial show, meaning that it's dedicated to strong continuity, and has a very defined beginning and end to each of their seasons. Characters are relatively simple but fun, and they grow and develop as the story goes on. While the show is targeted at a preteen audience, there are more than a few nods here and there for older viewers. The fight scenes are also well animated and are often a visual treat.

Basically, if your a fan of animation, particularly the likes of Avatar the Last Airbender, this is a must-watch show.

What is this Kickstarter for?

Ankama is hoping to dub their series in English, and is using Kickstarter to help make that a reality. Here's the youtube vid explaining the kickstarter and giving us a taste of the dub with two characters, Sadlygrove and Evangelyne.

Like any Kickstarter, there are multiple tiers and stretch goals. Ankama needs a bare minimum of $80,000 to dub the first season. Anyone wanting a Blu-Ray collection of the series would need to pledge a minimum of $40 CAD ($36 American).

As an added bonus, if the Kickstarter manages to reach the season 2 stretch goal, anyone who's pledged enough for the season 1 box will also get the season 2 box free of charge. In other words, you are literally paying pennies for each individual episode.

This is also the ONLY TIME you will be able to get the Blu-Ray for this series. These season box sets will not be offered at retail, and are only going to those who pledge to the Kickstarter now.

So please consider a pledge. You'll definitely be getting your money's worth!

Status as of February 19th (OVER)

Well, the Kickstarter has wrapped up, but we did an incredible job! We ended up surpassing the original goal by 600%, and now we're getting so much more than just the first season!

I'll let the Kickstarter speak for me here:

Through your pledges, you've unlocked:
  • The 26 episodes of Season 1
  • The Nox Special Episode
  • The Ogrest Special Episode
  • All 26 episodes of Season 2
  • All 27 Mini-Wakfu episodes
  • The three yet-to-be-released Special Episodes
  • All of these episodes with English dubbing and the original French audio, with English, Spanish, and French subtitles!
All of the content listed above will be included for every pledge that comes with a Blu-Ray and every Blu-Ray add-on pack for no additional charge.

That is AMAZING!

Yes. Yes it is.

And now in addition to all of that, we'll be getting an original episode as well! October is a ways away, but the wait will be worth it!

Thank you to everyone who contributed and/or spread the word!

*Note that these are available tiers, with some limited tiers already used up.

I know it's more complicated that this Kickstarter, but this show seems like a no-brainer for Toonami or Cartoon Network to pick up. Their goals are very reasonable. Why would this show not be localized and put on a major network for kids? Look at stuff like Korra and Star Wars. Kids like this kind of anime-lite stuff.

Ankama is so fucking cheap they can't do the dub themselves?
And aren't subs preferred for overseas market?

I might go for this, but need to know if this is going to be US region locked as a Blu Ray release or if it'll be region free first. Sent a question asking and we'll see what happens.

It's a french cartoon, not a japanese anime. Oddly japanese anime is the only language medium where people seem to prefer subs to dubs. Long as the dub isn't some awful disaster (lol winx club) - I'll take a decent dub over a sub any day

More like there isn't really that big a overseas market for all the related stuff (card games, MMOs, comics, etc.) so not much of an incentive to make a gamble.

Good thing one of the stretch goals are English and Spanish subs!

Seriously, though, subs may be something enthusiasts want, but in general you want some kind of dub if you want to appeal to the mass market.

The advent of Kickstarter means studios now want to kickstart their riskier projects. Since it's not being dubbed for CN or another western network, they can only rely on retail sales. This significantly riskier, especially for a French cartoon that is, on the whole, unknown to other markets.

This is another thing. Wakfu is part of a muli-media franchise in France, few (if any) of which is present in the States.

Ah the pure Japanese language is the usual argument heh....

Wakfu is pretty much available to the US market last I saw, it's not popular at all but it's there, no?
Ankama is making bank on Dofus/Wakfu related stuffs, they could use that to fund a dub instead of asking for fans' money

Don't be ridiculous. None of these shows are done for free. There is always something that is paying for them, whether they be ads or merchandise. Since the show isn't airing on TV and since there's little if any merchandise, they can only rely on the sales of the show itself.

It's not like they're gouging you for money. $40 for the entire first season in HD is more than fair.

Does Kickstarter charge you automatically when you enter a tier, or not until/unless it actually reaches its minimum goal?

Also, I hope that if this success they'll think about doing a campaign for a translation of that graphic novel they made a trailer for that I keep forgetting the name of.

It charges you when the campaign ends.

Wakfu was a favourite of mine when it came out, I was always enthralled by the disjointed but interesting lore of wakfu/dofus. Unfortunately the series has the bad habit of having several episodes where nothing relevant happens plot-wise, and then doing all the catch-up in the last few episodes.

I'd watch the first season regardless, I can GUARANTEE that the last episode will bring you to tears. There anglish subs around.
The second season is a bit worse, unfortunately.

I'd also recommend Dofus: la sèrie, it's made of short but really entertaining stories about an old adventurer who owns a boutique of used loot.

Corporate meddling did tear into S2 a bit, but I think the only stuff I can say didn't like were the few episodes right after the end of the first arc, and maybe spending an episode too long on the second boufbowl arc. The S2 finale was metal AF though, and the fountain episode is one of the best despite not having anything to do with the overarching plot.

The fans are mobilizing.

In at 75 CAD. Might up it later, depending on what happens between now and later.

So they're really settling with Percedal, huh? What was wrong with 'Tristipin', I wonder? Anyway: FUCK. YES. I love me some Wakfu. According to the comments, the VA they got for the video probably won't be the final voices for Percy and Eva... which is too bad, because they're certainly doable. More importantly, it look like if the crowdfunding reaches a certain level it'll guarantee everyone getting a S2 Blu-Ray along with their Season 1 sets.

Anyone know if the Blu-Rays will be english dub only, or can we maybe see some dual-audio? I know this Kickstarter is for the english dubbing, but the French dubs was already SOOO good it'd be a shame to leave it out of the release. Though I can understand if they do, considering I don't believe they've even released Blurays of the show in France yet (DVD and digital releases only).

I don't get it... do they fight with ejaculits? What if someone puts an eye out. This clearly isn't suitable for all ages :(

They said they would if there was enough demand and as of right now more than half of the comments are asking for it.

actually it seems they already answered this question and I just missed it:

If the $100,000 stretch goal is reached, we will include English and Spanish subtitles over the original French audio. We're not yet sure if we'll include the original French audio in the Blu-Ray if we don't reach that goal, but if there's a lot of demand for it from the backers, we'll certainly consider it strongly!

So it's guaranteed to have French audio if it breaches 100k (natch, I mean what will the subs be for?), not-so-guaranteed if it doesn't. Heh, they're just angling for pledges but that's fine. I'm pretty sure reaching 100k won't be a problem.

Hope it succeeds, I thought this showed looked cool the first time I heard of it, and if it comes out in English I'll gladly watch it.

I also hope there is a market in the future for crowdfunding to get (audio) localizations produced for niche products that might otherwise not have had them.

Yeah, I'd love it if projects like these could also be extended to game localizations as well. Even if the games have to be digital only.

Also, they're up to $20,000 now after a few hours, or about 25%. Not bad for a show that's relatively niche, though we're going to need more help with reaching the Season 2 stretch. Hopefully news of this spreads even further :)

This show is pretty good. I'd definitely like to see more but I'm not aware of anything that they've made past season 2.

Regarding the universe itself, there's another series called Dofus: The Treasures of Kerub (Dofus: aux trésors de Kérubim) that takes place during the Dofus era (basically 1000 years prior to the Wakfu era and definitely before Ogrest's Chaos). It's a series of 13 minute shorts that center around the Ecaflip Kerub and his vast collection of antiques, knick-knacks and charms; each with a story to tell. It's more of a comedy than Wakfu, but it has plenty of action and light-hearted drama sprinkled sporadically about. It's been airing in France since last year and should be ending its run soon-ish (Episode 49 of 52 recently broadcast). It's actually rather entertaining.

Pertaining to Wakfu, an original story that takes place after Season 2 is currently being produced in manga format (or 'Franga' as some have taken to calling it) and collected into Tomes. Tome 1 came out early last year and Tome 2 released a while ago. It continues where S2 left off with
the Brotherhood of Tofu going on yet another adventure in order to save Chibi and Grougal from Jiva, the guardian of the month of Javian
.

Also, as mentioned on the Kickstarter, another set of 3 OVA episodes (45 minutes in length, each) will be starting production soon (if not already). I don't know what they'll be about but a rumor I heard (can't find any confirmation on this currently so take it with a grain of salt) is that there might be a timeskip involved and will focus on
Eva and Percy's kid(s)
. But that might be wishful thinking from some fans. I haven't the foggiest.

And, of course, Ankama is holding out hope that they can still produce a proper Season 3 someday. This kickstarter may be the first of many steps to make that wish a reality. Yeah, France3 really screwed 'em over or so I hear.

There is a castillian spanish dub of this series, so im really surprised there isnt an english dub, not even done for th UK market. Are there italian and german dubs?

From the 4 episodes I watched on tv, im sorry but the cartoon as a whole felt pretty generic. Typical french/japanese character design mix Im not really fond of, some really cheap animation at times, and generic characters.

Just read here there are some bland episodes in between and good things usually happen in the final episodes, but still those character designs....

Good luck to them though, seems that it has a good share of fans.

Oh, uh... that video actually confirmed it. Character sheets in the background. Crazy.

There was also an official statement about the OVAs months ago, that isn't fan speculation. It is a time skip (don't remember the exact years, I think six). They're set to release Q1 2014.

They voices sound a bit off but I'll probably back just on the strength of the show itself.
God damn that tier with all 9 artbooks is super tempting

I WANT THOSE BOOKS but I couldn't justify that kind of expense. I hope they can do add-ons.

Isn't this based on a F2P MMO, or is it the other way around?
The Dofus MMO came first, then they produced Wakfu MMO which was in beta for ages. In the meantime, they premiered the show Wakfu on the web and also on France3 (TV network in France). In the interim there were also a lot of games and spinoffs produced. Islands of Wakfu came out on XBLA sometime ago and has story ties to Season 2.

Hmm this show look pretty interesting, I'm loving the animation.

Pledged $100 freedom bucks.

Neat. Was a little endearing watching this in french, but a dub doesn't sound out of line.

Might go for the BD tier.

I remember seeing clips on youtube and being very impressed with the animation. And those English voices seem really good.

So uh, yeah. Hope this passes.

We're now up to $30,000 :)

I want to update the title as this goes along. Should I just say "$X funded" or should I do "$X/$80K funded"?

I'd prefer subs. The original voice acting is top notch, especially Nox.

Edit: I'll back this. $77 for the Adamai Pledge. I want that art book.
Judging from how fast it's getting pledges, it'll get the goal easily. Hell, I don't think /co/ knows about this yet. I expect the goal to be hit the second they find out. They love Wakfu and Ankama.

They've had like four threads max out since this morning.

The guy who pledged $4000 is Seth, he helped translate the Wakfu show, the Wakfu comics and all the Dofus cartoon translations, I think he also made the Wakfu/Dofus wiki. He was asking people for questions to ask the creators.
