Wal-Mart giving 500,000 raises

This. Turnover is not cheap and it can be very expensive even in a job that doesnt require as many skills or training. Walmart is broadcasting this for good PR but there is for sure a business reason behind it.

This. It's probably a bit of both honestly. It helps them with turn over AND broadcasting it gives them a PR bump which they've badly needed for a while now.

It's not as if it can't be both.

My wife and I have stopped shopping at Wal-mart entirely. It sorta happened gradually, until one day we realized we hadn't been there for 6 months and had no reason to ever go again. You can do it too! Stop supporting this horrible company and the bigots who own it.

Sadly that's not an option for everyone...

Yep.

As a former Wal-Mart employee, this rings totally true.

Has Wal-Mart invested in any automative technologies? I can only see them willing to pay more as they're going to eventually be cutting human labor.

By the reactions in this thread, seems like they just shouldn't even bother. WalMart doesn't give a raise, people are pissed. WalMart gives raises... people are ... more pissed...
That's not the case at all. People are just explaining why they are doing it. It's not charity to their employees.

Not everyone, but I think a lot of people shop at Wal-mart out of laziness/comfort. I know that's what the case was for us. Granted, Costco helps and not everyone can afford to shop there, but if you're regularly rolling out of Wal-mart with $150+ carts, you shouldn't be shopping there.

$9-10/hour is still shit pay in most major cities, with rent and home prices going up the way they are.

Costco starts at $11/hour, topped out at $21/hour. Plus benefits and off on major holidays.

Working at Walmart must be soul crushing.

I mean I see employees there and they look so worn down, like life has just spit them out and left them behind.

I did it for 3 months. In that 3 months my electronics department manager just stopped showing up for shifts because I was doing everything. So he'd lie to me and say that management wanted him to "work the evening shift". So after a few weeks, I asked one of the store managers (there's like 5 of them), who had no idea that our dept manager was working evenings (I worked 7-5). So out of nowhere, he starts showing back up for the mornings, but he'd just disappear.

So after 3 months, I finally had enough, and got another job out of retail for good. I didn't even give a 2 week notice. So I show up 3 weeks later to get my last paycheck (manager had to give it to you), so the one manager I had a pretty good relationship with had no idea I hadn't shown up for the past 3 weeks. He just assumed I got moved to an evening shift or something. So he hands me my check and asked why I left. So I was pretty open about it, and he agreed, and offered me to manage the electronics dept. I declined and got the hell out of there.

Not to mention the morning "team pull up" where they indoctrniate you with their stupid cheers. Just an odd experience, and by far my worst in retail.

Okay, I happened to be inside a Wal-Mart while they did one those cheers. Before the stupid cheer, a manager type lady was spewing off sales numbers. I was perplexed because she was saying things like, "electronic sales increased by 759%! Domestics are up by 250%! Woohoo good job guys!" Do they completely fabricate those numbers or something?

I don't remember TBH. I do remember the managers would make us step forward and say something positive about the company. It truly was soul crushing as a previous gaffer said. And everyone had to do it. It wasn't a "volunteer" thing.

I have the company email in front of me. I work as an optician at a Sams Club optical and the raise thing doesn't affect me but another thing they are doing is adjusting sick time usage. The old policy said you could only use sick time if you were absent more than one day. So if you missed one day, you were screwed. Also, even if you missed two or more days, you couldn't use sick time for the first day. Now if you have an excuse, you can use it.

They're normally year over year, at least when I was working at BB/HD.

We did the same thing at Best Buy.
I would imagine it's fairly common in retail.

And, I can't speak for Wal-Mart, but I know we went over figures that were real, since I pulled some of them myself, so don't see why theirs wouldn't be as well.

It's not as if it can't be both.

I'm pretty sure they'll also get a ton of it back when employees buy things in store with their discounts

I wonder if this has to do with the platforms both parties are bringing to next election. Income inequality is said to be a large talking point. WalMart is preparing for that pressure.

Were they expecting to lose a lawsuit of some kind.

I find it hard to believe Wal Mart is doing this out of the goodness of their souls based on past history.

But glad for the workers.

Interesting. I work in a distribution center and we had the same policy, I wonder if we will adjust to the new one as well. That would be excellent.

Oh shit I walked into the middle of one of these things not to long ago. It was after Christmas and I was picking up a ship to store item and I suppose that area is were they perform their satanic sales cheer thing. It was very, very awkward I stood there for what seemed and eternity as their manager spouted off numbers and cheers everyone looked miserable as they pretended to love their jobs. What a humiliating thing to have to deal with.

Yeah, that tidbit caught my eye. That and the "more predictable hours". There's times (this is common) where I've worked 5am-2pm, 7am-4pm and 1pm-10pm all in the span of like 4 days. I just want some consistency so it's a little easier to set up errands and such.

Is this a joke? 1 Billion USD is roughly a quarter of their 4Q earnings. That's a lot of money, even to them.

Well....'hiring less' is the whole goal behind employee retention as it costs to hire more .

But given how many Wal-Mart employees shop at wal-mart, a lot of that money will be coming back to them.

I just wonder how they will up the salary management pay. Brahs were already making about as much as the hourly associates. Now they've been surpassed by Department Managers.....

Maybe just your store? Most of us aren't like that. Some are but, most aren't. But it's true most of us hate the job, that includes management.

I'm rarely apart of those cheers, I skip out. Can't be worse then Macys. At Macys we constantly talked about how amazing the company was and how to make "MAGIC". Every single supervisor/manager down to even the associate was fantaically devoted to Macys and making MAGIC. Met your quota for a day? 100% you need 120%. Ugh.

I have worked at retail places before where quota was absolutely unreasonable. Like selling 2 product protection plans an hour, and if you met that you get a pat on the back, and are expected to improve on that next time.

$9/hr that's ridiculous, how can anyone survive on that...

At Single 0, it's $295 a week or $1275 a month on average in a place with.

That is plenty to live on if you are single, don't have debt, and choose not to live in an expensive area. Granted, income tax will knock that down a little bit.

My friend works at Walmart and from what he tells me, it doesn't seem that shitty. He gets plenty of hours and they're even willing to pay for his schooling if he wants to become a pharmacy tech. Granted he isn't living off it by any means rather just a job for now as being in his young twenties and still living at home

It's not just one store.

I mean you see that a lot in retail but it at least seems to be more prevalent there.

You actually get a tax refund and stipend with that income level. I had a larger return than withholding because tax law is a thing.
