Wal-Mart to Black Sleeve M Rated Games

Wow... did this thread seriously go three pages based on a Satire link? :lol :lol :lol
Wal-Mart censoring media is hardly a stretch to believe. I read the Filefront link and it seemed legit. I am honestly relieved that this isn't true.

If this is actually a satire situation - the hell with it, I stand behind what I said ;) If it's a joke it's actually pretty damned clever because there's nothing implausible about Wal-Mart doing this. Between Wal-Mart and Great American Beefstock, anything is possible.

Oh you fools. You stupid, stupid fools. It's a SATIRE WEBSITE. Did anyone actually go there?

Other headlines from the same page:

KANE & LYNCH 2 TO BE SKINNED WITH GAMESPOT ADS

RARE TO REMAKE TABOOO: THE SIXTH SENSE

DIGGING YOURSELF OUT OF A HOLE MAKES HOLES BIGGER, MAN LEARNS

Jeez people.

The problem with this satire is that it's actually believable. :lol

Exactly my thoughts. Seriously though, it's getting to the point where satire sites like this and TheOnion don't make you laugh, but roll your eyes (ie - Radical headlines). Well OK I still laugh afterwards.

Hmm, so, CD's with suggestive covers (even though the audio is censored) don't have black sleeves, R-Rated movies don't have black sleeves. Yet M-Rated games do. Some double standard. I guess R-Rated movies with REAL PEOPLE involved in violent acts isn't as influential as some highly textured polygons. Riiiiight.

So, will they be printing the ESRB descriptors on these sleeves?

Because otherwise, this is HI-LARIOUS in the manner in which it defeats the purpose.

Edit: satire, eh? Some one ought to let FileFront know. ;)

Edit2: Well, the File Front story seems to have been pretty active3 on digg.

Gentlemen, I predict that this fake news story will make the real rounds.

I hope the thread title stays as is...I wanna see how long this can continue. :lol
I find it ironic that people are outraged when media outlets report information about video games incorrectly, and yet you want a title that promotes a fake news story about the marketing of games being censored to stay the same. I fell for it but lets not help this rumor fester into fact.

Don't they realize that only makes these games more desirable? I've never had the urge to pick up and read a Cosmo more than when my grocery store started putting black sleeves over the cover.

Curiosity. Its makes us want what we can't see. Thanks Walmart.

seriously

how is purposely fooling everyone, and possibly spreading a false rumor beyond the confines of this forum, any better than trolling?

Dude, who really cares? I fell for it, it's no skin off my ass. It's not like being wrong about this is gonna somehow cripple the gaming industry or Walmart itself.

I just think the fact that so many people believe this story to be true without knowing that it's a satire is extremely telling. Basically, no one in this thread would be surprised if Walmart went to this extreme.

This is a gaming board, a broad-based activity where fun is the name of the game. And invariably, many of it's topics follow suit. Let's not pretend the forum is anymore serious than what it is.

Can someone show me an offensive box art? Please?

This will only piss people off depending on how they do the black sleeve. I can already see people getting the wrong game due to stupidity.
I think that the last Leisure Suit Larry game was offensive to "sum."

More proof that GAF can't read? :p
No wonder why so many don't even play videogames...and hate games with lots of cutscenes, or puzzles that you actually have to think.. :p

eh I fell for it, but only because I saw a link from filefront. I was actually very suspicious because I had never heard of scrape.tv, but then I saw the more respectable link below I thought it was real. What gives filefront?

I don't have time to read, I skim. Only when I need to prep for writing an article do I actually take time to do so. For those who's job is to report this stuff, they should be reading. ;)

Someone needs to alter the thread topic...like NOW. This thread should be killed off within a matter of hours.

Nice fact checking filefront.

CMON MAN! You shouldn't have pointed it out... Would've been fun to see Kotaku and the rest pick up this news :lol
Kotaku smarter than NeoGAF and Filefront? :lol

:lol
The OP had it coving up the ESRB ratings and descriptors.

Erm.... It's been pointed out already, but Bully's not rated M. (EDIT: Wait... T-rated titles get a half-sleeve? What the hell's the point of that? It doesn't make any sense whatsoever.)

Also, this is old and rumour. I've seen this thread locked before. The only thing new is.... Nothing. The new article references the old one.

So, basically, Wal Mart seeks to cancel out all money that went into creating the box arts? That's gotta be kind of, you know, lawsuit-worthy.

I think that companies should take issue with this. If they don't, then censorship will take a foothold. The only reason Wal Mart doesn't do this with movies (which are considerably more gory and provocative than game covers, and much easier for kids to purchase than games) is because Wal Mart acknowledges how powerful the movie industry is, and if they tried that, they'd get fucked pretty hard. All the games industry has to do is prove that Wal Mart can't afford to censor their work, which will be a victory against censorship - and Hell, I can't imagine it being difficult for them to win.

I was about to get pissed, but seriously.

It's like saying an article from the Onion is real. Sort of like how actual fundamentalist preachers said that an article from the Onion saying that JK Rowling hates Jesus and her sole purpose for writing the Potter books is to curve Christianity.

Yes. I have met fundamentalist preachers that are THAT stupid.

I want developers to start making real adult games... not porn, but definitely more nudity in ordinary/realistic circumstances. Screw the make-believe, make the violence and nudity as realistic as possible, so that you can't play the game without feeling uncomfortable. Then tell every news/media outlet that you were trying to make it as simulated as possible, because they (the news/media, even society) have allowed them to create something that realistically unnerving by making the ridiculous claims that previous titles (Mass Effect, GTA, etc) were already murder/sex simulators... Shove it right back in the faces by making a piece of social commentary-themed art.

Someone needs to go completely friggen overboard in order to push the boundaries so much further that any current AO game looks tame by comparison.

This bullshit has gotten completely out of hand. It's like blacking out an R rated movie. Maybe if AO rated games were allowed to exist then there's no problem with doing that with them, but this is dumb. It's like black sleeving Saving Private Ryan or something. Next thing you know places will refuse to sell M rated games all together.

EDIT: Ok, I read the rest of the thread, but still, the fact that we're acting like this just goes to show how possible something stupid like this really is.
